Pittsburgh Steelers Season 2 Check-in
Entering season 2 coach Wayne Kerr knew him and his team would be behind the 8-ball to begin the season as coach Kerr was on vacation throughout the entire off-season, preseason and first two weeks of the regular season. He assigned his associate coach to make a couple free agency signings, most of which are former New York Giants that are washed up and are unlikely to make any sort of impact.
Trades Recap
Coach Kerr was on the phones by the poolside making a couple trades to help bolster the lineup now and in the future. Starting with a 1st round pick swap with the Carolina Panthers, now Pittsburgh sits on 2 first round picks in the upcoming draft. The other trade made was moving WR Chase Claypool and a few draft picks for WR AJ Brown who is already making an impact putting up a 5-94-1 stat line in his first game with the club.
A Reunion of Sorts
Last cycle coach Wayne Kerr led the Eagles to a trio of playoff appearances including a 14-2 season that saw the team lose in the NFC championship. At helm of the offense was Carson Wentz. Although the offense ran through. Miles Sanders, Carson Wentz was still an important piece to the success Kerr had in Philly. With Kerr now residing across the state in Pittsburgh, he had the QB position wide open as Big Ben saw his last season in the NFL from the sideline and Kaepernick not getting the job done in season 1. The Steelers were on the hunt for a new signal caller. They made several offers in free agency including now Colts QB Matthew Stafford. How ever the one that came to fruition was former Colts and Eagles QB Carson Wentz. Wentz coming off an abysmal 2021 season where he threw 58 interceptions (???) compared to only 24 tds. Coach Kerr was looking for someone he was comfortable with and someone who knew the system. It wasn't the reunion Kerr expected or wanted but it's the one he got.
A Look at the 2022 Season
The team was forced to start the season 0-2 due to Kerr's absence. His first game back was no easy task going up against last year's AFC north division winner the Baltimore Ravens. The defense kept the team in the game but the offensive line struggled to keep Wentz off the ground and the Steelers lost 24-13. Looking at this weeks matchup versus the Cowboys, another one of Kerr's old stomping grounds, they head into the matchup desperate for a win. Coach Gomes and the Cowboys are off to a solid 2-1 start and are certainly not lacking talent on either side of the ball. The rest of the opponents they will see this season are from 2 strong divisions, including the NFC south and AFC east. Although the Steelers are 0-3 there is still lots of season left to figure things out and get on the right track.
