Heading into the 2021 season the Steelers had several questions marks surronding their roster. Who will start at QB? Will the offensive line hold up? Will rookie running back Najee Harris come as advertised? Can the defense do enough to keep the offense in the game?
All of these questions have been answered thus far throughout the first 4 weeks of the season. As the Steelers look ahead to a matchup vs Denver we will take a look back at the Steelers season so far.
QB Colin Kaepernick was brought into training camp as someone who could challenge franchise legend Big Ben for the starting quarterback position. Kaepernick won the starting job after a good preseason combined with horrendous Big Ben outing vs the Lions in week 2 of preseason. Kaep has put up a servicable 1,015 yards while completeing 63% of his passes. Minimizing turnovers has been a point of emphasis for the Steelers this season. Only throwing 5 ints through 4 games. (Which is great compared to many of you sfl members)
As far as the offensive line is concerened they've only given up 10 sacks which ranks around the middle of the pack. While also fielding a top 10 run unit. Running back Najee Harris ranks top 5 among backs for rushing yardage. Considering they finished dead last in the league last season, Pittsburgh will take this as a win.
The defense has been nothing short of spectacular. Checking in with a top 5 defense in points given up (27/g) and rushing yards allowed (92.8 y/g) Headlining the defense is a couple of veterans in steel town. 11 year veteran Joe Haden leads the way with 4 interceptions. Starting strong saftey Terrell Edmunds has found the endzone twice already through 4 weeks. One fumble recovery for 6 and a pick 6. Newly acquired CB Kendall Sheffield (trade with Atlanta for Juju Smith-Schuster) checks in with 2 ints and 8 DEFL's. He has been a difference maker for the defense and hopes to carry that momentum throughout the rest of the season.
There have been a few underwhelming players for the Steelers. Outside linebacker TJ Watt has only accounted for 6 total tckles and 3 sacks. It is only a matter of time before he gets going. Inside lineman Cam Heyward had a tremendous first 2 weeks but has been injured since. A huge loss for the defensive run game, the Steelers can't wait until he can get back on the field. Lastly WR james washington has had a dissapointing start to the season. Collecting only 5 catches for 53 yards and a td. Pittsburgh moved on from Juju because they wanted Washington to see more snaps. They hope James can turn his season around and make the Steelers passing attack lethal.
That is all. See you in 4 weeks for another check up on the Steelers.
