The Pittsburgh Steelers most recent SFL draft wasn't one for the ages, however they did look to act accordingly as their picks came in. Hosting a total of 3 picks within the first two rounds, the Steelers were looking to make selections that could impact the team directly going into the 2022-23 season.
Although they were not in the market for a Quarterback according to GM/Head Coach, Jordan Charles, back in January, things certainly changed as the team opted to select USC product Kedon Slovis with the 18th overall pick.
"We took the best available player there, it just so happened that Kedon [Slovis] fell to us in this spot." said Charles when asked about the selection.
Slovis has been able to take a good amount of first team reps during camp, and with things looking a little different within the offense, these reps were proven to be the difference. Third year WR now turned TE, Chase Claypool will play a much larger role within the passing game now that he is getting more snaps, the connection between he and Slovis was apparent from day one.
"Moving Chase [Claypool] to tight end was a way to get him on the field and more involved after losing [Eric] Ebron this off season," Said Charles. "Mackensie and Kedon both brought similar skill sets to the table, but in the end we decided that Kedon was the best fit for us at this time."
When asked about the now settled QB competition the Alabama product was clearly frustrated with the outcome, but stated that he would "be ready when his name is called again." It's unclear if the Steelers will be moving on from John or if they plan on keeping him for insurance.
Kedon Slovis will make his SFL debut next week as the Steelers take on the Miami Dolphins.
