Although they do have one remaing game against the Chicago Bears to close things out, the Pittsburgh Steelers' season has been one that was lost early on.
The Steelers turned to rookie quarterback Mackenzie John following their week 9 bye, and since have recorded a record of 2-5 with the former Alabama product under centre. This record is not a full on indication of how the rookie has performed however, as there have been a slew of miscues throughout the Steelers' play.
"Mackenzie [John] has shown me enough over these past few weeks to consider him a long term option at quarterback for us," said HC Charles after their 44-26 loss to the Cleveland Browns in week 16. "We've got a lot to work on but we've also got a fair amount of young talent mixed in with our vets. Myself and the rest of our front office will have our hands full over the next few months."
Charles seems to be referring to the slew of re-signings that have yet to take place up until this point with his comments. The Pittsburgh front office still has yet to table offers to tight-end Eric Ebron, Centre Maurike Pouncey, wide receiver James Washington and tackle Ja'wuan James just to name a few. Charles just so happens to also be the team's general manager, so he isn't quick to seprarate himself.
It has yet to be seen which direction the Steelers are looking to go in regards to their cap situation, but it seems as if they don intend to work out most, if not all of their outstanding contracts once the season comes to a close.
"We don't want to get into rebuilding mode when we have pieces here to compete," said Charles. "We just need time to cross the T's and dot the I's is all."
