Through eight games this season philly stands at a respectable 5-3 which is good for second in the NFC East. Their schedule doesn't get any easier as we approach the playoffs. The Eagles are well off their pace from last season but as they learned quickly last year, record doesn't matter once you're in playoffs. Their 5-3 record is nothing short of a miracle given the offseason changes that had to be made from the mess Howie Roseman left behind after he was let go. However this team isn't looking for excuses, they go out expecting to win every sunday.
The defense has been plagued with injuries which has translated to players playing out of their natural positions. Cornerback Avonte Maddox, who is entering a contract year, has been their best defensive player, playing opposite of superstar corner Darius Slay. Maddox checks in with a team high 6 interceptions. Rookies Paris Ford and Richard Lecounte have delivered 3 and 2 interceptions, respectively. Their biggest challenge thus far has been getting to the quarterback. Preseason free agency pick up Chad Thomas currently leads the team in qb tackles with 6. Reinforcements are on the way however, with the likes of Javon Hargrave (16m a year thanks Howie) and 3rd year man Josh Sweat inching closer to returning.
On the offensive side of the ball, they're on a similar trajectory as they were last season, with the core of the group remaining intact. Sophmore receiver Jalen Reagor got of to a sluggish start but has excelled in his last 2 appearances. At the end of the day this offense with go wherever Miles Sanders and the offensive line will take them.
Without looking too far ahead, the Eagles will enter the offseason with rougly 55 million in cap space, with a few key players to resign. The final weeks of the season will decide who has earned a contract and who hasn't.
