The Bills defense came to play in the wild card matchup vs Rookie William Grier and the Patriots. The defense had Grier reeling early. Grier would throw 5 interceptions on the day and received several slaps to the face as the Pats offensive line was overwhelmed by the Bills front four without team QB tackle leader Trent Murphy. The day was won by defensive captain Tremaine Edmunds who pulled down three of Grier's passes to set up the Bills offense for more scoring opportunities.
The festivities erupted with this Jerry Hughes welcome to the big leagues hit on rookie QB Will Grier on the Patriots first offensive possession. Hughes may have knocked a screw loose in Grier's brain because he would fall completely apart for the bulk of the game.
Backup defensive end Eddie Yarborough was the next defender to get to Grier as the rookie was trying to get his footing in the contest.
A pressure from rookie DE Torrian Smith forced this Grier pass into Edmunds' hands for the first turnover of the contest.
Another Smith pressure forced Grier to throw this interception to Jordan Poyer who was trailing Gronkowski but baited Grier into the throw.
Smith finally got to Grier for a QB tackle to continue to keep the rookie off of his game.
On a two-point conversion attempt late in the game, Jerry Hughes got to Grier for the second time in the game.
Late in the game, Grier was forcing passes like nobody's business and Edmunds got his third interception to continue to frustrate the Patriots coaching staff. We knew he was frustrated.
Finally, Grier forced a pass into cover 4 drop zone and Bills Safety Micah Hyde put the rookie out of his misery.
Speaking with the Bills head coach after the game he had this to say: "We thought talent wise we were about another season away, but our guys have been playing tough."
