LBz's SFL MOCK Draft 2019
Just a word on what goes into my mock draft. I look at rosters, but I also heavily consider scheme fits. If you ain't scheme fitting you are not going to get the best of the player. He'll never be what he could be and it will be all your fault LOL. With that in miind let's get into the mock.
Team Needs (C, RE,FS , WR). One thing that was visibly clear with the Ravens outside of the QB needing to get rid of the football quickly is that the team does not have a lot of home run threats on offense. The team could use a young playmaker on the perimeter for Jackson. Defensively the team has been hit by age in the secondary and just average talent at RE. So the team really needs to shore up the trenches and the Safety position. Pick: DT Daniel Weatherington. Weatherington has generational talent. The biggest concern I’d have with him landing with the Ravens is that he’s not a scheme fit for them. If I’m this team I’d take P.J. Blackshear instead. The value is there and the need is there. The team would be better of shuffling Willie Henry to LE to fill that gap. In round 2 they should take the best C on the board to shore up the AWR issue on the OL or take the best Safety in the draft.
Team Needs (C, RG, RT). While some think the Giants may take a QB here, the team actually has much larger holes to fill. 2nd year QB Kyle Laletta is more than capable and is actually more accurate than the Bills Josh Allen and in some areas the Jets Sam Darnold. The Giants would be wasting a pick on a QB. The team would be best building the OL from the inside out. The value here is at Guard. Pick: C Logan Swift. Swift would be an excellent pick for a Giants team that is in shambles from the middle of the OL to the right. The Giants will have to decide how they want to build this line. Do they work from the inside out or from the outside in. I’d suggest the former since awareness at Center is a big part of how the entire OL performs.
Team Needs (RE, OLB –Power) The Lions are transitioning to a Multiple 34 team on defense so it would make sense to grab playesr that make that defense work. I think DT Josiah Rhodes is a great selection for them at this spot. He is a Big run stuffing 6’5 316 lb monster. He performed 36 reps on the bench which translates into 90 + strength. The team would do well to play Rhodes at the RE spot. The Lions could also go with ROLB here who would provide them exactly what they need as an edge rusher combining speed and hit power to solidify one of the edges in their 3-4 defense.
Teams Needs (HB, LG, MLB) Pick: Howard McMichael the mammoth Guard out off Alabama. 6’3 338 lbs 36 bench reps and is a plug and play run blocking machine. Pairing him with David DeCastro will give the Steelers a tankish interior whereby they should be able to run isolation and dives on just about anyone. The team could also use a HB as the SFL’s James Conner is not what he is in real life.
Team Needs (RG, LT, HB, LOLB, FS, ROLB) The Titans secretly have a lot of needs based on what they want to do. Offensively they run a West Coast Zone scheme so they like Agile linemen and LT and RG are spots that are in dire need of help. They also would like a HB that has more wiggle to him. Defensively, they run a Multiple 3-4 and need speed rushers at the OLB spots. Pick: Bernard Copeland LOLB Copeland had a great combine workout and brings a lot of moves to the table to give offensive tackles who do not have quite feet a lot of problems. He should fit right in for the Titans. The Titans would do well the play him opposite of Harold Landry. Both players give the team exactly what they need for their Multiple 3-4 Defense.
Team Needs (RG, RT, QB). The Dolphins have needs along the offensive line. They need two agile linemen to excel at running their vertical zone offensive scheme. Tannehill is actually not as bad as his coaches suggest. However, they may look to move away from him as the value is not here for the type of offensive lineman they are looking for. Pick: QB Bryant Droege Pittsburgh. Droege fill fit the mold of what the Dolphins are looking for in a QB. They want a guy with a strong arm to fit their vertical zone run scheme. I’ll be interested to see how the coordinator uses the arm talent of Droege. He had Tannehill and threw a lot of drags and short routes.
Team Needs (RT, LG, LT, LE, RE LOLB, ROLB) The Bucs quietly have several needs. They’ve made a scheme change on defenses to a base 3-4 and they need reinforcements immediately. They also lost Guard Ali Marpet in Free Agency. Combine that with playing in a division with AFC South Division champion Atlanta Falcons and there’s major work that needs to be done here. The owners haven’t been active so that puts a clamp on things. Ideally with all of these needs I would have liked to have seen the Bucs trade the pick to GB or Oakland so that they could stockpile picks to build the roster. But that’s is not in the cards. Because the team does not have anyone at LT the position for this pick is easy. The player however, is a bit more difficult. Do you pass over the incredibly talented Simmons and Venable for a Scheme fit in Caldwell? Pick: Julius Simmons LT Texas. This is a tough decision for the Bucs. It boils down to talent vs scheme fit. The Bucs gamble that Simmons is close enough to what they need in a scheme fit that he will become a scheme fit sooner rather than later.
Team Needs (WR, CB, RT) The 49ers love speed at WR and a lot of it. It will be tempting to pass over one of the best talents in the draft in WR PJ Blackshear, however, the 49ers have a severe hole at the CB spot. His issue will be outside of CB , this is just not the draft class for Corners. After Russell the drop of is tremendous. With that, the 49ers take Dior Russell CB Texas A&M. The loss of Witherspoon really hurt the 49ers here as they could also use another CB to pair with Russell as Sherman’s best days are beyond him.
Team Needs (QB, LT, HB) – This team is scrambling trying to sign leftovers but really need to cash in on a top QB prospect for their scheme. They like a guy that can move to run their spread offense, but this draft does not have a guy with those kinds of wheels. Pick: Brock Rubin QB Nebraska. Tobek is just one of those QBs that knows exactly what’s going on, what plays and adjustments need to be called and how to get the offense in position to deliver the knock out punch. We’ll see if that translates to his SFL Career in Denver.
Team Needs (LT, C, RG, ROLB) The Seahawks run a multiple zone attack on offense so they need athleticism up front in the trenches. They like to bait QB’s with their Cover 2 zone scheme on defense. Pick: Griffin Poppinga Guard Oregon State. The thing here is that Poppinga fits exactly what the Seahawks want to do on offense. While Sutton may be the more talented prospect, he’s a power guy who does not give the team the athleticism it would like up front.
Team Needs (RG,RT). The Jags are a conundrum at times. But I will not get into this. This team is in severe need of trench players to open running lanes. The owner however, has already stated they will draft a HB early. I’m not sure if he meant 1st or 2nd round, but if you have nobody on the roster to play RG and a player who’s going to get eaten alive at RT the decision should be easy. Pick: Brieon Sutton Guard Texas. Sutton is a day one starter that the Jags could use to open the run lanes. Only advice I can have here is BE SMART MANG. The HB’s in the draft with probably be there in the 2nd and 3rd round because they lack speed and most people are not going to jump. But do as you wish.
Team Needs (RT,LE) The Bears run a spread offense and they need a RT to step in immediately. Their scheme requires agile players and they have their eye on (Pick): Vincent Garner RT Florida A&M. Garner can step in immediately fitting into the Bears spread offense and be a force on the right side for QB Mitchell Trubisky. The team could also use a run stopper at left end and they will pick that up with their 2nd pick.
Team Needs (RG, WR, RE, LOLB): The team lost wide out Randall Cobb to Free Agency and did not bring back emergency option, Geronimo Allison. This team could use an infusion at WR to pair with Adams. Surprisingly one of the best players in the draft slips to this spot, but will the Packers take him here? With two first round picks, the Packers will probably do something silly, like draft a QB. Pick: Aaron Tobeck, QB Pittsburgh. I can’t even talk about this. Like it or not you are paying for Rogers the reaminder of Madden 19, whether he's on your team or another. NEXT!!
Team Needs (LG, RG, RT,CB) – The Bengals run a Vertical Zone Run offense that requires agile players at all the spots on the offensive line. The Bears beat them to the punch to take the Agile Garner out of Florida A&M so the Bengals take the talented LT Nate Venable, who they will move over opposite of Cordy Glenn. While he is not as agile as the team would like, his talent comes into play and maybe he can work on his agility and athleticism to later be that type of player the Bengals are looking for. If not, his best days will be behind him as he will not progress like he could if he played in the right scheme.
Team Needs (WR, RT, MLB) – The Cars run a Multiple Zone offense and need agility in the trenches. But the value is not there so they look to get athletic elsewhere and take a top talent in the draft in MLB: Khris Wells. Wells is a huge upgrade over Josh Bynes and gives the Cards the QB of the defense they need to take away routes over the middle and move sideline to sideline to drop running backs before they can get started. This will be the steal pick of the draft as Wells easily has DROY ability.
Team Needs (WR, RE, LOLB) – by taking a QB with the 13th pick the Packers turn here at 16 to replace Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison with (Pick): WR B.J. Cannon Ohio State.
Team Needs (WR, OLB, OL). This team needs a lot and they are in a good position to grab some needed playmakers. What stands out most is the lack of talent in the WR room. Sure the team needs OL in a relatively deep OL draft. What’s not deep however is the WR talent and it may be frugal for the team to pull the trigger on a perimeter threat at this spot and pray that OL is available later. The thing is the Bills are in a marquee spot here. Do they take one of the top playmakers after Blackshear in this draft in Vernard Galvin or Lindsey Hudson, or do they go ahead and solidify their offensive line with Tackle Pearson Caldwell or Corlus Carlson? It will be a tough decision for the team to make and a gamble because if they cannot get a lineman in round 2 then they are kinda stuck with Conner McDermott as a starting Tackle. UGHHHHHHHH!! They have to protect Allen at all costs, so the team selects (Pick): Pearson Caldwell, Tackle Pittsburgh.
(Team Needs OL, DE): The Panthers were in several bidding wars in free agency. The team looked heavily at Ali Marpet and CB. The team needs OL more so than it needs CB and with Dior Russell already off the board, the team decides to pull the trigger on a blue chip talent on the OL. The issue here is that the Panthers are a West Coast Zone run team. Unless they change their scheme they desire linemen who are agile and athletic. The value and need for their scheme is not here when they pick. Thus the team turns to the defensive side of the ball and replaces Thomas Davis with OLB Lorenzo Dickerson who is not only a scheme fit for their defense but he’s one of the top 5 fastest OLB’s in this draft.
Team Needs (QB, RT). The Chargers run a spread offensive scheme that requires Agile and athletic linemen and ideally they want a QB that can move. At this point the value for what they are looking for at RT is not on the board so they turn to the QB of the future and select QB Simon Kustok Auburn.
Team Needs (OL, TE). The Vikings are in between a rock and a difficult place as they attempt to find someone who can start at LG for them. In their West Coast attack, ideally they want agile linemen. The issue here is that the players that fit their mold are off the board at this point. So to ease the anxiety of losing out on a Guard the team elects to go talent over scheme. The Vikings would ideally like to move out of this spot so that they can get in position to select the player that actually fits their scheme. But the chance of losing out on a lineman to help the team creates too much fear. Pick: Marquis Avant Georgia. The great them about Avant is he can play multiple spots on the OL. The Vikings get creative here and draft Avant to play alongside C Pat Elflein. While Avant is not a scheme fit, he’s the best talented interior lineman on the board at this point in the draft that can come in and play from day 1.
Team needs (CB, LG, MLB) – The Chiefs were in the Ali Marpet bidding war. Marpet however, does not fit their Vertical Zone Run Scheme. Like the Vikings and the Bengals before them, the Chiefs are stuck here as the players that fit their OL scheme are just not available in the draft at this point. The CB position has also dried up after one pick, so the Chiefs turn to the defensive side of the football and select: MLB Julian Dimanche. Damanche is a day 1 starter who is very explosive on the snap of the football. His 3 cone and 20 yard shuttle is very impressive and 2nd in both categories among middle linebackers. The Chiefs will be very happy with this pick.
Team Needs (HB, WR, TE, RT, LOLB, MLB) – With so many needs, the Raiders pick the wrong season to make the playoffs and not cash in with a championship. The team will be swift with this pick. They will run to the podium with the card which will read. With the 22nd pick in the 1st Round the Oakland Raiders Select: LOLB, Juwan Keglar. Keglar will allow the team to move on from Lorenzo Mauldin who is JAG. Another player to keep an eye on here for the Raiders is WR Vernard Galvin who would allow the team to move on from the aging Jordy Nelson.
Team Needs (TE, WR). The Dallas Cowboys are set in most areas on the roster. Thus the team ends up getting a steal here in the draft and drafting the best player on the board in WR Vernard Galvin. Drafting Galvin gives the Cowboys a lot of flexibility going into season three to clear the books of players like Terrance Williams and even Hurns if they would like and especially the drop machine Darboh. Another player the Cowboys could target here is LOLB Rashard Cox who can come in and learn the ropes from Sean Lee and eventually take over for him. I’d think Vander Esch would already be doing this, but the team has him as the 2nd string Middle Linebacker.
Team Needs (LT, WR, LOLB) The Eagles need a pass protecting Left Tackle to fit their vertical zone run scheme. The team is in luck as pass protectors are available. The fill their need by drafting: Corlus Carlson LT Syracuse. Carlson is a bit light at 6’6 308. However, his technique as a pass blocker is sound. He’ll be the perfect replacement for the retired Jason Peters.
Team Needs (RG,LOLB, ROLB) –The Rams might want to move out of this spot. They could use some help along the offensive line OLB and at CB. Their scheme calls for agile linemen who are all off the table at this point in the draft. While they have speed at OLB, none of these guys have moves to get around lineman who actually excel as technicians or other lineman who have a power game. So I have the Rams improving their pass Rush at the OLB spot. Speed and Acceleration won’t matter if you don’t have moves. With that in mind I have the Rams taking LOLB Jabri Bradham.
Team Needs (QB, WR) The Patriots picked up Aaron Lynch in Free Agency to solidify the OLB position. The team also signed Paxton Lynch at QB who can only serve as a backup. The team could not convince Brady to stay around and now is trying to scramble to fill the void of his retirement. The team really needs a QB but the value is not there so they stock the cupboard defensively and select: Taz Harding DE Notre Dame
Team Needs (CB, LG, RG, RT) – Another team that was late in the Witherspoon sweepstakes but decided to not get into the bidding war and bounced quickly. At this point the team is out of the agile lineman sweepstakes and is shutout at CB. The team has to find better options in the trenches on offense, so they take RG Jorge Brazzell.
Team Needs (HB, WR, TE, RT, LOLB, MLB) With their second pick in the first round the Raiders turn to the offensive side and select WR Lindsey Hudson. This allows the team to move on from an aging Jordy Nelson. It will be tempting for the team to take a HB at this spot and there may be one that is worth it here, however, several will be available in the 2nd and later rounds. So the Raiders grab their Nelson replacement and given they pass more than they run this is a good pick for them.
Team Needs (RG, DT, OLB) – The Browns are pretty set on offense but could use some line help although it’s not an immediate concern. The team would like to add an outside linebacker in a class where speed at the position is not king. One thing I can say about this class is that some of the guys are strong as Oxen. The Browns take one of those guys to play in their defense. Pick: LOLB Rashard Cox. Cox is one of the strongest linebackers we’ve witnessed in a Madden draft class. He comes in bolstering 38 reps on the bench which translates well over 90 strength. That’s crazy for a linebacker in Madden. Not only does he have rare strength at the linebacker position but he also boasts at the minimum an 83 hit power.
Team Needs (OL, future QB), This team loves stacking the cupboard to replace players coming off the books. However, the team is in desperate need for a LG. With all the traditional agile guards off the board, the Falcons do some research and discover a gem sitting here in LE Shawn Rudolph and decide that he will be a great fit in their scheme. Pick: LE Shawn Rudolph.
Team Needs (LG, C) – The Redskins had an amazing season making it to the SB with a QB that would be on the practice squad of most teams. Boykins inability to fit passes into tight windows however showed up in the SB and it was a huge difference. The team should do what it can to upgrade in this area. The defense is set for the most part however, if they want to get younger at a couple of spots they can look at MLB. The team brought in T-Mobile in Free Agency to be their immediate option at QB. He’s an upgrade for them. The Skins take a chance on C Navasa Powell who is rated pretty well although he may have some awareness issues. Perhaps the skins draft Powell and move him to Guard and double back on a Center later.
Team Needs (C, LE, MLB, CB) – The Colts took it the distance and cashed in their Money in the Bank Briefcase for a championship. With CB Dior off the board the Colts will luck out and get a generation talent at MLB at the bottom of the first round. The team needs to find a Center. It’s risky but the team takes has to find a C to play in the center of their vertical power run offense. But rather than reach, the team opts to take MLB Banks Smelter out of South Dakota to QB their defense.
