There was a lot of good and a great deal of bad in the Bills home opener. The team failed to defend its home turf in a game that they just made too many mistakes to win. The great thing is that the mistakes are easily correctable. Let's look at it.
The defense gave up two big runs in this game that really helped San Diego. The first Melvin Gordon run was just a great call by the Chargers and great blocking execution. The Bills were in their speed package so once the pulling Guard matched up with the DB, and the Center was able to get to the 2nd level on Edmunds, Gordon was able to make a nice cut and take it the distance. The 2nd big run at the end of the game however, was just bad alignment by Matt Milano. The Bills were in a 43 Under front which required Milano to line up on the outside of the defensive end. Rather than line up outside, Milano line up between the DT and the DE which forced Edmunds to try to defend two gaps. Edmunds got picked up by the pulling FB and Poyer got picked up by the pulling Guard, which created a lane for Gordon. This run is easily correctable. If I see my guy line up wrong, I'm moving him to where he is supposed to be. Other than that the run defense was pretty stout. In any case, the Bills run defense gave up historic rushing numbers against an LBzrule coached defense. We have never given up those kind of numbers on the ground, even in Madden 10 where the run game was ridiculous.
On the other side of it however, the Bills set an SLF record. The pass defense was ridiculous I guess. The Chargers finished the game with negative 4 passing yards.
Yes, you heard it right. The Chargers finished the game with -4 passing and won LOL. All I can do is laugh as we worked through the adjustment and work through upgrading the offense. Let's look at the Bills pass defense.
Jerry Hughes continues his reign of terror on opposing QBs.
Like last week, he got to the QB twice this game.
Cornerback Phillip Gaines also got in on the QB Tackle fest getting to Rivers on a 4 man pressure in the 3rd qtr.
The Bills looked to their depth and found a gem in Deon Lacy who recorded his first of which he hopes to be many QB tackles on the season.
With the offense sputtering and the team needing the football back, Jordan Poyer made a nice play tipping a Rivers pass to himself.
Unfortunately, Poyer was not able to score on the play as the team really needed the points.
Rookie Middle Lineback Tremaine Edmunds also notched his 2nd interception on the season.
The team is back at practice today preparing for the Minnesota Vikings.
