First and foremost, Mitchel Trubisky showed up to play in the opening game of the year. He made some big plays when needed. There was one bad call from the coordinator that led to an untimely interception that should have been avoided.
When talking to coach Payton after week 1, he addressed his main three areas of focus.
"First thing is first, it felt like Oprah was out there giving away free fumbles to everyone, YOU GET A FUMBLE, AND YOU GET A FUMBLE, we had 4 fumbles this game, and lost 3. That is not acceptable, and that need to be addressed straight away, turnover battles are the cog in our engine at the moment. Number 2, we did not generate a consistent pass rush, look we know we played against Aaron Rodgers, and he can scramble out of the pocket at will, but unless we find a way to get to the QB, we will be forcing ourselves into situations that we do not want, not everygame can be a shoot out, we need some consistent pressure to help alleviate some scope of the offense. Third, coverage, I know we had 6 picks, and that is exceptional, but we also gave up over 400 yards. Given there was 55 throws, against 14 rushes, 4 of those coming from the QB, so we can call it 59 to 10, we are bound to give up more yards passing, but when the play breaks down, we have to be able to maintain our lanes on zone and man, stay true to the formula and come up with the batted balls as well as the ints. Overall, we have plenty of work to do, but there is always a silver lining when starting the year 1-0 against a division foe."
The player of the game was Roquan Smith. In his first NFL game, he made 2 interceptions to go along with his 9 tackles, but none bigger than his pick 6, which was the deciding score of the game. Roquan won NFC defensive player of the week, and if this is any precursor, he is set up to have a good year if he can keep consistent.
Only time will tell for this team, but at the start, the pros outweigh the cons, and there will be a solid test against the Seahawks in week 2.
