EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The skies are clear and the grass is green. A subtle summer breeze with throwback Biggie Smalls blaring over the mounted loud speakers. On the field, you see a young fresh faced QB barking out orders in the first team huddle before breaking it to the sound of roaring fans who made the trip to watch the team practice. On the sidelines, you see a veteran ex-champion head coach with eyes brimming with hope and pride for the future.
Quarterback Sam Darnold, 3rd overall selection, University of Southern Cal. New York Jets’ quarterback of the future. Coach Cyphadagawd, one time champion, perennial Sideline Football League championship contender.
A match made in heaven. Well…maybe not heaven. But it is indeed a match made in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
I got to get a good eye on the 21 years young quarterback and my my my, I came away impressed. His 90 throw power, 86 short accuracy & 82 middle accuracy on display as throw after throw were lasers into the safe and secure hands of his high ceiling receivers.
Not a single pass hit the ground. Not a single pass was interceptable.
I don’t know if that’s a word or not but it will be today.
Coach Cyphadagawd made it very clear that the offense will run through the capable hands of his rookie quarterback “for better or for worse”. “We see an opportunity to develop our young quarterback by allowing him to actually get out there and prove his worth. We drafted him to be our future but I say I wanted him on this team to be our right now. I gave him the entire playbook. Every single play. He has not dropped anything yet and I expect results from him.” Said the Coach Cyphadagawd.
I have a feeling that this team is going places. Whenever you have a young quarterback that you’re leaning upon, there is a sense of “uh oh” and “get ready for some mistakes”.
I say not with this kid. He’s got his head on straight, knows how to sense the pressure, can throw a tight spiral with minimal effort, has a strong pocket presence and doesn’t hesitate whenever he finds an open man.
He’s the truth. Plain and simple. I have seen a bunch of quarterback prospects come into the Meadowlands and flame out. I just can’t see that happening with this kid. He’s that good.
I look forward to seeing him scrim over the next few weeks with some of the league’s teams. I have a feeling that he is going to surprise some folks. Definitely going to keep a close eye on his progression from being a young kid who barely is able to drink legally to being a top flight quarterback in this league. Until next time, Jetty McFly, Out!
