The first game of a new season always brings up jitters. Will we execute well on the new things we've practiced? What's new from the other team that we haven't seen? Will I get bogged down with all the new stuff I want to do? The Bills executed well but got cheated on one play defensively. Mayfield's 2nd TD should have never happened but alas it did. Nano detection should not be a thing if you are sending more than they are blocking but I digress.
Nathan Peterman looked very sharp this game. It was perhaps his best game as a starter as he had almost a near-perfect passer rating. The offensive line kept him clean all game. Unfortunately, the team lost Nick O'Leary for 8 weeks due to a hip injury but they called up Undrafted Rookie Free Agent Joey Ditka and will see what he can provide as depth. Let's look at the defensive performance against the Phins.
Second-year Free Agent Pick-up Quinton Dunbar continues to make a case for the Nickel role in the Bills defense. He started off the festivities with a QB tackle on Mayfield on the Dolphins first drive of the game.
Later in the 1st half, second-year Defensive tackle Ikeem Ives destroyed a combo block attempt and got to Mayfield quickly.
If they were not impacting the pocket the Bills defense was impacting Mayfield in the passing lanes. Ben Heeney has been everything the Bills need in a subpackage linebacker. He picked up his first interception of the season late in the first half setting up the offense for another FG.
In the second half, Bills CB Tre'Davious White snagged his first interception of the season as he locked up the right side of the field the majority of the game.
Finally, the user, the user!!! Preston Brown picked off Mayfield late in the 4th quarter.
Made his way down the sideline and leaped into the endzone for the score.
The Bills return to practice today in preparation for a big game against the AFC North Champion Cincinnati Bengals.
