Every mock draft is different. This one is no different. Sit back grab some coffee or egg noggin as I try to predict what teams might do in the 2019 SFL Draft.
The Cowboys made some bold moves trading away Ezekiel Elliot to get into the #1 spot previously owned by the Kansas City Chiefs. This is pretty much a luxury pick for the Cowboys as the roster is pretty filled out.
Pick: MLB Antwuan McNeal Wisconsin - of course, Zach's mentioning MLB in chat could be a smoke screen but I think he'll take McNeal here.
Jack always finds himself here in the top 5. The team does not have a true LG, neither do they have a FS and the back ups at SS are not going to suffice. Jack will take the FS first and fill in the LG spot later. Another thing to consider here is Ben is 37 years old. A successor will be needed soon.
Pick: Tyron Everitt FS Louisville
The Jaguars have a lot of needs. At this point, they have a bum at QB, no LG, and no RT. There is at least one player that they can shuffle on the OL to fill one of those spots. The Jags must land a QB. While owner Bando Lando loves veteran FA signings at the position he needs to get younger here.
Pick QB Jeff Vobora Wisconsin. His choosing to not throw at the combine will not be enough to keep the desperate Jaguars away from their signal caller of the future. The Jags will look to fill the Offensive line needs later.
Like the Jags, the Vikings are anorexic for QB help. The team has 0 QB's on the roster. The owners have to hope the Jags pass on Vobora at 3. If they do, the Vikings will pull the trigger quickly. If the Jags take Vobora at 3 then the Vikings have to take Clemson's Ross Manusky at this spot.
Pick: QB Ross Manusky Clemson - The book is still out on Manusky. His combine score is off the charts for a QB. He has a strong arm and he has great accuracy at the most important spot, mid accuracy. He may take some time to learn the playbook or he may have some stamina or injury concerns but he's got everything you'd want in a QB. The Vikings may have to take that risk here at 4.
The Panthers need defensive help in a division with the Falcons, Bucs, and Saints. They need help at SS, FS, ROLB. Coleman can play at FS but an upgrade is needed. He's slow and just not very good. And short. With the Steelers taking Everitt with the #2 pick the best FS is off the board.
Pick: Pause Ross FS Georgia. Ross can shift to SS if need be. He has the speed to keep passes in front of him and help the Panthers secondary alleviate some of the deep bombs by division opponents.
Last season the Lions took the best HB in the draft in Bennett Hammond. This season I look for them to start on the defensive side addressing either LOLB or SS.
Pick: Felix Crumpler LOLB Appalach.St. Crumpler is climbing draft boards. He's not very fast but he has a great football mentality.
The Dolphins took their QB of the future with the 1st pick in last year's draft. That they are at this spot shows some improvement. This year they will need to find someone who can start at RE right away.
Pick: Sean Birdine LE Wisconsin - Birdine is a big body guy with a lot of strength. He's got decent acceleration to work around offensive tackles and with his strength he should be a force on the Miami front for years to come.
The CPU will select an LOLB.
The Falcons move into this spot ahead of division rival New Orlean Saints in a trade with the Ravens, which sent HB Tevin Coleman to Baltimore. The defending NFC Champions could use a LE. With Birdine off the board, they may look elsewhere.
Pick: Ronnie Polite Wisconsin. The pick ends up being a luxury pick for the Falcons. The team selects a nigga that's not so Polite when he tackles people over the middle of the field. This selection is timely as it takes a potential weapon away from the Saints defense and bolsters a Falcons unit that already led the SFL in several categories last season.
The Saints are an interesting team to project. They have depth almost everywhere. With the early signal callers off the board the Saints look at HB or WR.
Pick: WR Jaron Canidate FSU. The Saints add another young gun to their WR unit allowing them to cut older players or move the vets to spot duty.
Last season the 49ers got their future signal caller in Marvin Jordan. This season I look for them to give the QB another blanket over the middle.
Pick: TE Trey Colvin Texas A&M. Colvin provides Jordan with a security check down blanket that can work the middle of the field. While his top speed is not fantastic, getting there is no problem for the young TE out of A&M.
Last season owner Bryce AKA Harambe missed the playoffs for the first time. On top of that both Blount and Jeffery regressed. I look for him to address one of those spots with this pick.
Pick: Lache Cross HB Penn State. The Eagles take Cross who is the strongest HB in this draft to replace Blount and continue to give them the strong rushing attack they've had this cycle.
The Bears need to get younger at SS and they could use that 3rd WR to go along with last year's top pick Love.
Pick: D.J. Dotson SS Fresno State. Dotson overall is a very solid prospect at SS and will make the Bears secondary a lot better.
The Giants could use some help at the CB position. Youth is needed as Jenkins has turned 30.
Pick: WR Quinn Federkeil. The Giants could also use a good 3rd WR moving aging veteran Kendall Wright to spot duty.
The Broncos took John Elway Jr. last season and he's worked out for them. He needs to cut down on the turnovers. The Broncos need help at left end.
Pick: Michell Shipley LE Oklahoma. Shipley will step in and start for the Broncos immediately and bolster their front seven against the run and the pass.
The Rams need to get better at RT. Right now they have no one labeled as a RT on their roster.
Pick: Morgan Mack RT, Tennessee. Mack will step in immediately and man the right side. He has great acceleration and strength which will allow him to keep the better pass rushers in the NFC West at bay.
The Chargers allowed MLB Denzel Perriman to walk in free agency, perhaps with the expectation of drafting one of the top players at the position in the draft.
Pick: Alan Lindsey MLB Nebraska. Lindsey with his 84/85 speed should sit pretty in the Chargers defense and help deal with Chiefs new HB Ezekiel Elliot. He also has the short area burst to help guard multiple routes over the middle of the field.
The Colts have depth across the roster. One area they could get younger and improve is at LE.
Pick: Bernard Patton DE FSU. The Colts pick up a physical BEAST that is able to impact the trenches immediately.
The Titans could use some more chips in the secondary and they grab one here.
Pick: Crandall Poteat CB UAB. Poteat can jump in right away and pair with Adoree Jackson and Tyrell Young and form perhaps the fastest CB trio in the league. It would be a great grab for the Titans as they must find a way to combat the speed of the Texans at WR.
The Bills are a team that really need to find some superstar talent on offense. The offensive roster only has one player with a quick progression. The team is desperate for more playmaking on offense. However, the team has always stuck to its board so anything is possible.
Pick: C.T. Roach TE Nebraska. Roach can get some experience while aging Charles Clay plays out his contract. Roach would give Nathan Peterman a tall middle of the field target to assist in the passing game.
The Cardinals made the playoffs but they had one of the worse pass defenses in the league. This is surprising with PP7 in the secondary. But it's not PP7 that's the issue. He has no partner in crime significant enough to deal with the type of WR's the Cardinals see every week.
Pick: Lemarcus Leroy CB Nebraska. Leroy is not a speedster but he is technically sound and should do well against the 2nd wideout on most teams. He can bolster the #2 CB spot for the Cardinals moving E.J Gaines inside to Nickel where he belongs.
The Green Bay Packers roster is actually set. They lost Jordy Nelson to FA but the team is still set. Any pick here is a luxury and tailoring the team more to what owner JTurk wants them to be.
Pick: Diamond Marshall DT Louisville. The name fits this pick. The Packers find a diamond at 22 who can play at several spots in their 3-4 front (NT/DE). Marshall is perhaps the strongest player in this draft. Combine that with his other talents and he can be a nightmare for opposing offensive lines.
With their second pick in the first round acquired from a trade with Cleveland, the Rams will need to address the outside linebacker position.
Pick: Gordon McClain ROLB Stanford. McClain does not have great distance speed, however, as his 3 cone and 20 yd shuttle suggest, his short area quickness is the best at the position in this draft.
Oakland lost Sean Smith to FA and age. They also are down to two HB's and Lynch is on his last legs.
Pick: Anton Crawford HB Maryland. Crawford is the fastest runner in the draft and can give the Raiders offense some speed to pair with Cooper at WR.
The Bengals have made it known that they want zone corner help. They are will to sell their draft for some help. It doesn't look like there are any takers so the Bengals are stuck here.
Pick: Fisher Wade CB Rhode Island. Wade has the best vertical jump in this draft and it is a very important attribute that is needed if you want to play zone.
With their second pick in the first round, the Cowboys stay on the defensive side of the football and add to the trenches.
Pick: Tyronne Nesbit DT FSU. The Cowboys add the 2nd strongest DT to their DL rotation giving them depth to send at the passer all game.
The Patriots do not have a true MLB on their roster but they have some players they can move around.
Pick: Ronnie Garvin DT Louisville. While they need a true MLB the Patriots opt to get stronger in the trenches addinig Garvin to their rotation.
After addressing QB with their first pick, the Vikings front office turns around and adds to his receiving options.
Pick: Ethan Sundberg WR Miami. Sundberg adds to the receiving options for the Vikings new signal caller.
The Jets are still tweaking their roster. The team made it all the way to the AFC Championship game last season and they look to build on that success.
Pick: ROLB Norman Hellestrae. The Jets currently do not have a player at ROLB. Hellestrae is not a track star, but he's strong as an Ox and will help set the edge and get after the QB in subpackages.
The Seahawks secondary even with an aging Sherman is the best in the league. Where they could use help immediately is at the outside linebacker positions. But this is not the reason they were bounced out of the playoffs. They failed to score TD's against the Falcons in the NFC Championship game.
Pick: Turner Bender WR UGA. It's not a flashy pick but it's a guy that can move the chains while other players work the field deep.
The Falcons run to the podium with another luxury pick.
Pick: Chance Huff LT Texas. Huff adds to an already stellar offensive line as the Falcons just get younger and better offensively.
The SB champion Texans give QB Deshuan Watson some additional protection on the right side of the OL.
Pick: Markus Hammond RT Stanford. Hammond steps in and starts right away to round out the Texans offensive line.
