A long term contract extension has been rumored between start running back David Johnson and the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson, who is in the final year of his rookie contract is due for a massive pay day. Johnson has been a devastating runner to opposing defenses since he entered the league in 2015. The Cardinals must do everything in their power to keep Johnson from hitting the open market. He would immediately be the top player on the market. Rookie quarterback Devrin Gholston has shown promise through the first 4 weeks of the season, but in order for him to reach his full potential in future years, retaining Johnson and a strong run game is essential. Ian Rapoport has been quoted saying "Although the price and years of the possible extension with the Cardinals are still unknown, David Johnson could very well end up being the highest paid runner in the NFL sooner or later". Only time will tell whether or not the Cards lock up Johnson long term before free agency opens in March.
