The Bills Offense struggled this game. I think the encouraging thing is that these first two games the Bills have faced some great defensive talent up front and have fared well offensively except for the rushing game. The running game has been stifled against the Jets as well as against the Packers. They finally found some room late in the game vs the Packers. Needless to say, the running game is still a work in progress as the coaches continue to look at schemes to find angles for their HB's to do work. The passing game was a little more conservative this game than the previous but it got the job done. Let's look at Nathan Peterman in the redzone.
Peterman and the coaches figured that inside the 10 most teams in this league will be running some type of zone with the linebackers playing in the short area. The Bills lined up in a 2x2 set and motioned to a 3x1 set as seen above.
On this play, Clay attacked the same to hold the safety deep. Matthews runs a slant route from the slot with McCoy running a delay angle route to trail Matthews.
Peterman finds McCoy wide open on the Angle route.
McCoy crosses the endzone line for the score to put the Bills ahead for good.
Later, Lorenzo Taliaferro finally had the punishing style run the Bills looked for him to have when they traded for him. He rumbled for 68 yards to seal a game that was tightly contested until the 4th quarter.
The Bills are back at practice trying to come up with ways to run the football against their next opponent: a tough Jaguars front and secondary.
