The Lone bright spot for the Bills in this game was their passing game. Peterman and the WR's were on the same page for the majority of the game. There were a couple of bad throws and there were some dropped passes by Jones that give his ability should have been caught. But outside of that, the passing game shined. Let's look at a couple of plays.
On this first play the Bills line up in a standard 2x2 shotgun doubles formation. The Jets are in 0 coverage. Peterman sees this and communicates with rookie Paul Smoot immediately.
Here is how rookie Paul Smoot changes Buffalo's offense. Notice, the Jets while in 0 coverage, they are playing off.
Peterman knows this will be edge pressure from the Jets Nickel Corner so proper protection was called and the QB moved to his right.
After moving to his right he sees the rookie even with the defender and launches the deep pass.
The rest was on the rookie as he made an amazing catch off of an amazing throw.
Many around Buffalo refer to Smoot as a young version of Steve Smith Sr. Here he shows off that type of attitude on the score. Ice up son!!
Late in the game, the Bills were down 37-27 and starting QB Nathan Peterman suffered bruised ribs so he had to sit out a series. This is the value of having a quality backup. Veteran Tyrod Taylor entered the game and had to lead the Bills drive. The Bills line up in an Empty formation.
The Jets are in a 3 deep zone coverage. What we see here is HB Shady McCoy running the Stick n Go route down the seam.
Taylor was surprised to find him so open down the seam.
The Bills are still tweaking the offense and will definitely look for better ways to run the football as the run was stifled this game by a very stout Jets defensive front.
