The 2019 SFL Draft is a mere few hours away and things are shaped up in regards to the order. A fair share of first round selections changed hands over the course of the last few days, making things a bit more interesting.
Earlier this week a mock draft was released, showcasing a selection for all 32 teams, and now with the updated order in hand we revisit all 32 selections with a surprise guest giving his thoughts throughout the first 10.
#1 - Miami Dolphins
Crim Selection: RE - Allen Spencer - Wisconsin
The Dolphins will need to assure themselves that the production put up by DE Cameron Wake in the past would not drop off, thus the selection of Spencer here. He is capable of coming in and making a huge difference on the defensive side of the ball, very Myles Garrett like.
LB Selection: RE Allen Spencer - Wisconsin
"When you look at their roster and their Free Agency interests the Dolphins were heavily interested in Offensive linemen and linebackers. I expect them to take a defender with the first overall pick in the draft. Spencer steps in right away to take over for the departed Wake and keeps the Phins defensive line a stout force."
#2 - San Francisco 49ers
Crim Selection: QB - Zachery Lyerla - Notre Dame
The 49ers have a glaring need at Quarterback and should easily fill that need and give new hope to this 49ers organization with Lyerla here. He's easily the best Quarterback on the board by far and while he won't have the best receiving core to work with, he'll have a surefire target in Pierre Garcon to develop with in his rookie season.
LB Selection: WR - DeAndre Love - Florida St.
"While they do not have a great signal caller yet the 49ers get arguably the best damn player in the draft and Franchise Owner Spawn-eee Davis eats a ham sandwich with a big ole chesser cat grin on his face. Who needs a great QB when you can just lob it up to this monster."
#3 - Pittsburgh Steelers
Crim Selection: QB - Bradford Hape - Michigan St.
Although this may be a reach in the eyes of many, this Pittsburgh team relies mainly on their high octane offense to win them games week in and week out. Big Ben is on his way down the yellow brick road to retirement and this team still has some solid years with Antonio Brown and LeVeon Bell making some noise, so expect this team to keep this offensive train rolling.
LB Selection: QB - Zachery Lyerla - Notre Dame
"Owner Blackdiamond has been in the same position every damn season. Normally he would take a CB. Most drafts he tends to take a CB. This year will be different. He may actually draft the QB of the future here as Ben is almost done. Lyerla is exactly what the Steelers need in a pretty tough division. Could the young gun slinger put the Steelers on the SFL map?"
#4 - Denver Broncos
Crim Selection: QB - Sean Bradshaw - Oklahoma
Word around town is that this owner was not happy with his current crop of quarterbacks, and with the top teir talent in D.Thomas and E.Sanders aging the Broncos need to get the most of them as they can at this point.
LB Selection: QB - Sean Bradshaw - Oklahoma
"This team is in search of a QB for sure. However, the owner has been known to just love pass game threats. With Love already off the board, the Donkey’s take a QB. With Love off of the board Broncos management turns to what they consider as the next best thing for what they like to do offensively. They get their signal caller of the future and look for younger receiving talent later in the draft."
#5 - Indianapolis Colts
Crim Selection: CB - Ellis Bernadeau - Auburn
This team is very young and could use some more established talent all over the boad, their offensive line is nothing to write home about, but I believe they sure up their secondary here with the selection of Bernadeau. Vontae Davis isn't getting any younger and Malik Hooker surely could use another young playmaker alongside him within the secondary.
LB Selection: MLB - Emanuel Wise - Tennessee
"Yes I think Wise is coveted by the Colts more than the projected 1st round linebackers because of his speed, acceleration and strength. Wise is a player and will fit well with Green in the middle of the Colts defense. Good luck on stretch plays as the speed from both of these guys from the middle will nullify the edges."
#6 - Chicago Bears
Crim Selection: LT - Javonti Forte - Wisconsin
With a young blood under centre in Mitchell Trubisky the Bears need to surround him with weapons, but before doing so, they need to make sure he's not surrounded by defenders. Forte has impressed over the last few weeks leading up to the draft and will become Trubisky's security blanket fairly quickly.
LB Selection: LE - Ikeem Ives - Tennesee
"Would love to get 2nd year QB Trubisky a blanket that he feels comfortable with in the passing game. Other areas the team may focus on if they do not land Trubisky the best WR in the draft is all along the defensive line as it is thin and devoid of any significant talent. The Bears will take this player and move him into the LE spot as Ives can play both spots in the 3-4 defense."
#7 - Detroit Lions
Crim Selection: LOLB - Carlos Hagler - Florida
The Lions could surely use HB Bennett Hammond here, but they desperately need help within their linebacking core and with the best linebacker in this year's draft being available, there's no turning down his services.
LB Selection: HB - Bennett Hammond - Tennessee
"The Lions have three WR’s on their roster and one of them is 30. They could definitely take a WR here as there are plenty to take at the top of the draft. Another area they could address is LOLB to place another piece with 2nd year captain and the middle of their defense Jarrad Davis. Finally Glover Quinn is a declining warrior in the secondary at 32 years of age. That said the Lions are in a great position to make their offense a deadly force by adding the best running back in the draft."
#8 - Oakland Raiders
Crim Selection: HB - Bennett Hammond - Tennessee
Simple and plain, Marshawn is not the answer here in Oakland. Hammond gives them a very solid weapon on the offensive and opens up more opportunities for Carr and company to shine.
LB Selection: MLB - David Walker - USC
"The Raiders still have a very talented team. There are not many weaknesses. The MLB spot could use a superstar talent there. They have speed there but the talent is not ideal."
#9 - Los Angles Rams
Crim Selection: MLB - David Walker - USC
The Rams could sure up their linebacking core with this pick here. Walker has the look and feel of a pro-bowl Middle Linebacker, and when you can get talent like that at #9, some shuffling of the linebackers is the least of your worries.
LB Selection: CB - Ellis Bernadeau - Auburn
"The Rams have been scouring the FA market for Offensive linemen and Corners. I expect one of these positions to be addressed with this pick. The team is in dire need of a playmaker on the perimeters of the defense as 5’8 Nickell Robey Coleman is their most talented player at CB. They did address this area in Free Agency, however, I’m not sure it is enough. I think the Rams take the best CB left on the board."
#10 - Tennessee Titans (Via New Orleans)
Crim Selection: WR - Taylor Jeanty - Ohio St.
Jeanty would bring a sense of security to this passing game for the Titans and they surely need it. With Eric Decker out of the picture, Delanie Walker on his last legs and the Titans looking to pair up someone with sophmore speedster Corey Davis, Jeanty makes the most sense here,
LB Selection: TE - Ryan Kimrin - FAU
"The Titans are a puzzle here as they have all of their roster spots filled and they have depth at most of those spots. One area I think they will go is TE with Delanie Walker being 34 years old it’s time to look to the future. Another area the Titans may look to address is depth at CB and ROLB to move 32 year old Woodyard off the roster."
#11 - Jacksonville Jaguars
Selection: QB - Devrin Gholston - Penn State
This Jaguars team is in win now mode with the signing of long-time veteran Drew Brees, but come the end of 2018 they may find themselves in a similar position as they were in 2017. Selecting Gholston here makes sure that doesn't happen again and gives them their man of the future.
#12 - Houston Texans (Via Green Bay)
Selection: DT - Joseph Barber - Stanford
This squad has a single defensive tackle on their roster heading into this draft. With edge rushers like J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney doing what they do best, it's best that they sure up the middle where runners will likely be forced and beef up their front seven.
#13 - Cincinnati Bengals
Selection: ROLB - Warren Bomar - Louisville
Bomar can step into this defense and make a difference from day one. He'll bring a hard hitting style to a very gritty team and also will provide some solid pass rushing opportunities, where their linebacking core as of now lacks.
#14 - Carolina Panthers
Selection: FS - Sergio Powers - Miami
Carolina could surely use the secondary help here at #14. Current FS Kurt Coleman is on the wrong side of the pond when it comes to his age and Carolina cant afford to take any steps back when it comes to defending the stellar passing attacks that the teams within the NFC South, let alone the NFL have at their disposal.
#15 - Tennessee Titans
Selection: MLB - Emanuel Wise - Tenessee
Tennessee filled a need on one side of the ball and will flip over and do it again on the other. They lack both in the pass rush category as well as having young talent within their linebacking core. Wise will kill two birds with one stone here.
#16 - New York Jets
Selection: LT - A.J. Zahursky - Pittsburgh
The newly acquired Teddy Bridgewater will find himself with a new best friend with this selection. New York needs to keep their mobile QB upright in order to use his legs and Zahursky is the man for the job.
#17 - Buffalo Bills (via Kansas City)
Selection: WR - Paul Smoot - Flordia
One word. Speed. Smoot is one of the fastest wideouts in this year's draft and will provide big play ability through the air for a team in Buffalo that truly lacks a threat as such.
#18 - Washington Redskins
Selection: LE - Travonnie Cochran - Wisconsin
Washington is in dire need of something to spice up this defense and I believe Cochran is the answer. He can help create massive amounts of pressure, which would benefit the solid secondary of the Redskins in a big way.
#19 - Arizona Cardinals
Selection: QB - Marvin Jordan - Miami
This team needs a replacement for Carson Palmer like there's no tomorrow so they'll have to settle for the best remaining signal caller on the board. Jordan has a very strong arm which could translate into success in an offense as such.
#20 - Dallas Cowboys
Selection: SS - Ross Perkins - Ohio State
Dallas has needed to address the safety position for quite a while, and although Ross Perkins isn't the highest rated safety left, he is the most talented. Perkins would step in and take over the starting job the minute his name is called.
#21 - Buffalo Bills
Selection: FS - Franklin Malone - Florida
Buffalo benefits from the lack of safeties needed in this year's draft and from having two first round selections. Malone is another safety who'd step into a starting role once his name is called.
#22 - Baltimore Ravens
Selection: HB - Sherman Powe - Oklahoma
Joe Flacco needs an every down back that can run the ball effectively and catch out of the back field. Powe is that type of player, but I'd expect him to still share carries with the likes of Terrance West even when he is named the week 1 starter for this team.
#23 - New York Giants
Selection: MLB - Antwon Bellanca - Clemson
New York needs to keep its defense in top tier shape with their offense taking a step back this off-season as Brandon Marshall exited stage right. Bellanca is the man they need, he can hold down the middle of the field and allow the rest of the Giant's playmakers to do what they do best,
#24 - New England Patriots
Selection: MLB - Dallas Rutherford - Texas A&M
He may have to settle into a new role and play on the outside of things, but Rutherford is too good of a talent to pass up. This team needs another linebacker and at the young age of 22 Rutherford certainly has the time to learn a somewhat new position and excel in a franchise as storied as this.
#25 - Seattle Seahawks
Selection: WR - Wade Martin - Florida St.
This team isn't far off from being a Superbowl champion once again. Giving Russell Wilson another sure-handed target outside of Doug Baldwin and lining him up with the likes of speedster Tyler Lockett will make this team a force to be reckoned with.
#26 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Via Minnesota)
Selection: LE - Matthew Ambrose - LSU
Tampa Bay takes the easy route here and gives their front seven a younger and faster spark. Ambrose won't be the focal point here as Gerald McCoy and Chris Baker will eat up most of the blocks, so he has the chance to be very successful with this team.
#27 - Cleveland Browns (via Houston)
Selection: LOLB - Travon Sutton - Florida St.
The Browns would have to do some shuffling around after this selection, but it's a no brainer to take the best LB available to have learn from one of the best in Jamie Collins.
#28 - Tampa Bay (via Los Angeles Chargers)
Selection: SS - Dre Beck - Clemson
The Bucs can use the saftey help and wil strike gold at #26, so why not take a shot at the best safety left on the board?
#29 - Oakland Raiders
Selection: RT - D.J. Bridges - Ole Miss
Oakland will find Donald Penn's replacement here in Bridges. He played the right side in college but can easily make the transition over to the left side with a year under his belt.
#30 - Cleveland Browns
Selection: LE - Hunter Keasey - Oregon
The Browns were able to develop a superstar off the edge in Myles Garrett last season and Hunter Keasey has just about the same skillset. He may not be as talented as Garrett, but with some work he could certainly pair up well with the Texas A&M product and cause some havoc throughout the league.
#31 - Philadelphia Eagles
Selection: C - Griffin McMahan - Clemson
Philly needs to address their offensive line here and can move McMahan around in order to find the right fit for him.
#32 - Philadelphia Eagles (via New England)
Selection: C - Bruce Lott - Louisville
Another centre who is versitile and can be moved throughout the line, with these two picks back to back the Eagles can build upon a line that allowed LaGarrett Blount to run wild in 2017.
