It was not a great day for Bills rookie QB Nathan Peterman. He had great numbers, but he hit the dirt way too many times to be effective. Peterman finished with 340 passing yards, 1 interception, and he ran for 1 TD. However, he was dropped to the ground 7 times. Peterman was forced into several down the field down and distance situations as the Bills rushing attack was rendered ineffective with McCoy finishing with 12 carries for measly 16 yards. Let's look at a couple of his best passes.
3rd and Long Corner to Jordan Matthews
On this play the Bills lined up in a Bunch Offset formation but then motioned to 2x2. The secondary is showing three deep with one CB pressed up at the top of the screen. Peterman immediately recognized this as Cover 6 or 9.
On the snap, however, the CB at the top drop rather than playing the flats. Peterman initially has the HB open here.
The Nickel Corner jumps the table route by McCoy. This is good patience by Peterman and good pass protection up front by the Offensive line. Matthews is running the C route and at this point is clean.
Peterman finds him on the Corner to convert the third and long play.
Corner Route to Brandon Tate
On this play, the defense is showing cover 2 zone pre-snap with both corners facing straight ahead and both safety's even at around 12-15 yards deep.
On the snap however, the field corner bails, Peterman reads it as Cover 6 with the Quarters on the wide side of the field.
From there he knows he has cover 2 on the boundary and hits Brandon Tate on the corner route to convert another 3rd and long.
Down the Middle to Zay Jones
The Bills lined up in the bunch formation again and motioned to 2x2.
The McCoy is covered in the flat immediately. The user linebacker does not want to give Matthews the corner route this time so he decides to cover it.
This opened up the lane deep down the middle to Zay Jones.
The Bills look to expand on their passing concepts next season and put in a great deal of work in the Red Zone. Whether or not Peterman will be the starter remains to be seen. The Bills could be looking for a signal caller in the draft.
