We have decided to start a new series here at the Thundering Herd called through Nate's Eyes. In these articles, we will look at QB Nate Peterman's best throws and show you what he sees/saw. We will also do our best to show you his mistakes. Let's look at what he saw.
Nathan Peterman 23 yard Dig Route to Zay Jones
Nate drops back here and sees that the protection sets up well. Rookie RT Dion Dawkins did a great job here of keeping the linebacker at bay. Peterman has three reads that he's looking for here. Clay is the initial read, followed by Jones and then Matthews over the top. This order is not predetermined but made once Peterman hikes the football and sees what he sees.
As you can see the Safeties split so this is cover 2. The Middle linebacker followed the initial crossing route by Clay which vacated the middle both intermediate and deep. Technically Peterman probably should have hit Matthews on the Post but the wind is probably the reason why he settled for Jones.
Jones snags the pass and gets up the field for some yards after the catch.
Peterman 15 Yard TD Pass to Charles Clay
Now as we can see on this one the defense is in a zone based coverage with the middle linebacker was playing robber. The protection is not great here as Dawkins gets driven back into the Peterman who has to step up.
Upon stepping up Peterman found veteran TE Charles Clay on the crossing route all alone for a TD.
Clay hauled it in for the score, but also noticed based on this and the previous diagram that Jones was also open although the throw would have to be a bit tighter since the linebacker was underneath.
Nate Peterman 32 yard pass to Brandon Tate
On this play, Peterman likes to read the Flats first. The CB's played tight so he looked up the field and sure enough the safeties were split so then he made his progressions although he missed a big play opportunity here. A throw to Matthews here on the left side of the diagram would have split the safeties perhaps for a TD. However, the linebacker is drifting so Peterman checks it down.
However, here is where he should have stayed with that read. The route by Clay and Jones pulls the linebacker down and notice an inside lead to Matthews here would have resulted in a much bigger play. Also notice on the right Tate is free on the post. Dawkins pass protection does not hold up.
Peterman settles for Tate on the post route.
Peterman TD to O'Leary.
Peterman runs the play-fake here and notices from the right side the protection breaking down. So this will have to be a quick read and throw.
As he completes the play fake, Dawkins is beaten by the defender.
As we look at it from the top notice Clay is running a shallow cross and O'Leary is running a post.
Peterman hits O'Leary for the TD as he splits the Safety players.
Big Mistake - INT in the Redzone
Now let's look at Peterman's biggest mistake this game.
The Bills were in a shotgun Jumbo set and Peterman just was slow on the read. The football should be out right now.
The rookie waited too long trying to see what the middle linebacker was going to do. Now all the passing lanes are closed.
Had we waited another lane may have opened. He could have also scrambled up the middle on this play. But he forced an ill-advised pass.
This was our first installment of Through Nates Eyes. We look forward to breaking down more of the best and worst from the Bills young gunslinger.
