The Buffalo Bills continue to try to make a name for themselves defensively. This week they dropped Andrew Luck six times, hauled in two interceptions, and strip QB tackled him three times, one for a score to pull ahead in a tightly contested snow battle. ON passing downs the Bills showed the following:
4 rushers: 19 times
3 rushers: 2 times
5 Rushers: 6 times
6 Rushers: 4 times
The Bills ran both zero coverage and zone blitz concepts.
Shaq Lawson's 4th QB Tackle on the year was a result of a five-man pressure out of the Bills 43 alignment. Lawson just beat the blocker in quick fashion and got to Luck before he could get the football off. This blitz is not a free runner blitz and the Bills rely on their defensive ends to beat their man 1 on 1.
Rookie Corner Tre'Davious White got his second QB tackle of the season on a 4 man pressure out of the Bills 43 Alignment. This is a defense the Bills do not call very often but decided to experiment this game.
Nickel Corner E.J. Gaines first QB Tackle of the season was the result of a 0 blitz call and the defense simply overloaded the offense before the QB could get the football out.
Jerry Hughes continued his dominance amongst Bills defenders getting to the QB for the 14th time this season. This one was the result of a 3 man pressure where Luck scrambled to his left and Hughes beat the blocker
Hughes relentlessness resulted in a strip. Lawson would pick the football up and pick up a few yards before he was tackled setting up the Bills offense to continue to run clock.
Jelani Jenkins plays spot duty for the Bills, primarily in sub-packages. His 4th QB tackle on the season was from one of the Bills cover 0 schemes. The Bills like Jenkins in this roll because of his hit power which was on display in this play as he dislodged the football from Luck.
Jerry Hughes picked up this fumbled with nothing but green grass in front of him.
For the second time this season Hughes picked up a QB fumble and rumbled for a Bills defensive score. This score actually broke the tie in a tightly contested game until the 4th Qtr.
Bills outside linebacker Ramon Humber would get to the QB on a 3 man rush late in the game as our cover photo shows.
Finally, Bills FS Jordan Poyer would snag his 8th interception of the season to seal the game and give the Bills the victory. The numbers here suggest that the Bills are actually more conservative than aggressive, relying more on 4 man rushes than anything else.
