Bills Q1 Review
The Buffalo Bills have had a rocky start to the season. The offense and defense started game one against the Jets looking like they were still stuck in the preseason. The offense really did not have a rhythm and the defense played a great deal of bend but do not break and has been gashed on a weekly basis.
The offense struggled to find the end zone against the Panthers and the defense got ran over handily by Jonathan Stewart. In week 3 the defense gave up 40 pts and 400+ passing against the Broncos, yet they tackled the QB 7 times and came away with 2 INT’s. Head Coach Alonzo Harris had this to say, “We are just trying to get better as a team. There are some things that we have had some bad communication on and some alignment issues that have given up big plays. We have to correct these things. This is not the type defense we want to be. We like the wins but we have to get a hell of a lot better. Defensively, we are still learning and putting things together as we go. So this is a process for us. Whereas in years past we started the season knowing how we were going to pressure teams, but this is a learning process and it’s going to take some time for the team to gel . We are certainly giving up too many big plays in the passing game. We gave up two to the Falcons, several to the Broncos. Our run defense has been getting gashed up front. It is certainly not something you’d expect with guys like Dareus and Williams but it is happening.”
So coach what are some things you are going to do going forward to help your team? One thing we will do is begin to simplify the offense. We are working with way too much right now and need to simplify it. When your QB is thinking about too many passing concepts combined with your running game not performing well you get in a bind. We had too many options against the Falcons for instance. And when you have too many options to choose from you generally don’t master or won’t master anything. So we’re going to simplify it a little bit and see if that gives us a better sense of identity on offense.”
One thing is clear, at 2-2 the Bills need to discover who they are and quickly as the schedule does not get much easier.
