For the 2019 draft class the SD Chargers had quite a few needs to be addressed. With a favorable schedule and the best SD team in recent memory, the 2019 season is expected to be special for Charger fans. Without further ado, here is the 2019 draft recap for the Chargers.
Round 1- (10) - CB Sean Nesbitt -Texas A&M (79 ovr) "We had him as our #1 player on the board, said Coach Hawk. He will be counted on from day 1." Nesbitt lacks true elite speed but makes up for it with elite level acc and agility. He will start at NB on opening day.
Round 1 - (13) - MLB Jarrett Frey - Ohio State (79ovr) The Chargers got a pleasant surprise that Frey was still on the board at pick 13. "We couldn't pass him up. He's a top 5 player from this class in our minds said Hawk. He has elite skills that will translate perfect for our defense." Trading Attachou this off-season will hurt a lot less with Frey joining the Bolt defense.
Round 2 - (39) - Center Sinilau Swoope - Michigan State (74ovr) "He's a real young kid (21) and we felt like his best football was ahead of him, said Hawk. He will sit for a year and learn with another fellow rookie Center. With LG Matt Slauson creeping closer to retiremen, the pieces have been put in place to shuffle the OL and not miss a beat.
Round 2 - (42) - TE Kendall Melvin - Georgia (76ovr) The Chargers found a gem in the 2nd round by selecting Melvin. "We honestly didn't scout TE's in this class. We are in a good place with Henry and Brate but our board went to hell and we decided to take a guy we felt like could help us based off his combine numbers. We're excited to for Melvin to be a part of this, said Coach Hawk."
Round 3 - (66) - FS Willie Bradham - Oregon State (71ovr) Quite a bit of a reach for a 3rd round pick. He will be a project but has a great chance to be a good overall FS. Needs to get his awarness and play rec up and he will be a solid player and special teams stud.
Round 3 - (74) - WR Tripp something (Terrible ovr)- Hot garbage pick, he's been cut. Bad use of a 3rd round pick. Meh.
Round 4 - (106) - SS Tyree Worrell - Illinois (73ovr) Good player taken in the 4th round. Has good base stats, will get his OVR pumped up from awarness and play rec being bumped up. Special teams player for 1st season and will see how it goes from there.
Round 5 - (138) - CB John Heath - USF (70ovr) Really excited with this pick in 5th round. Has good zone cvg, jumping, and quickness. Will play as a Rookie in Dime situations at a slot area DB or SS.
Round 6 - (170) - LOLB Russell Wang - William and Mary (68ovr) For a 6th round pick I think he's a good player. Has decent speed, will have 80+ block shedding, power moves, agility, and zone coverage after 1 season. Will be a speical teams player for first season.
Round 7 - (202) - Center/Guard Theodore Dahl - Boise State (72ovr) No question the best pick in the rounds 3-7 for the Chargers. He was projected undrafted and has 81 RBK, 80 PBK, and 81 IMB. Decent accleration and agility so he was moved to guard for an immediate backup role.
Overall I think for myself, this was the best draft I've had as an SFL member. There were no quick or SS development guys but overall I felt like the team got better.
