The San Diego Chargers opened up the new season with a big win over division rival, Oakland, 34-24 Sunday night.
The Chargers were led on offense by Rookie QB Dillon Hollenbach and Star WR Keenan Allen. Hollenbach was a 1st round draft pick by the Chargers in the past draft. It was a new sight for Chargers fans as Philip Rivers had been at SD for 13 seasons. The rookie went 23/34 for 287 yards, 2 TDs and 2 Ints. Not his best outing but it was efficient enough in his first NFL game and going against a really good Oakland defense. Allen has been Mr Reliable since his time at SD. He started the season with 5 catches for 102 yards and 2 TD's. The early chemistry between rookie QB and star WR is undeniable.
On defense the Chargers relied on big plays and timely turnovers to stiffle the Oakland offense. A recent trade with Chicago sent star DE Joey Bosa packing and brought in DE Jonathon Bullard and CB Leveon Ealy over, along with a 1st round pick.
Ealy made his biggest impact on Special Teams when he blocked a FG attempt and Rookie star, Cedric Crush picked it up and returned it 53 yards for a TD. Bullard made his prescence known, constantly harrrasssing the QB and registering 1 sack on the day.
The biggest surprise for the Chargers was how well the young San Diego secondary stood up against Oaklands star WR group, aka Cooper and Evans show. Limiting the big plays was a big area of concern for San Diego. Oakland is known for the deep ball and with them adding Mike Evans this year, it was even more of stressed issue.
All in all it was a great win for San Diego in all 3 phases of the game. One game doesn't make a season but the future looks bright with the young talent the Chargers have acquired, along with the veteran cast already in town.
Lots of big games this season so all you Charger fans stay tuned!!!
