The Carolina Panthers were suffering when it came to their secondary as the 2017 draft began, holding only 3 active CBs on their roster. Among other positions the Panthers were in need of they believed that a third shutdown corner was what this team needed most.
At #22 the Panthers selected Wisconsins' Deon Talbott, a 6'0" speed machine who posseses great speed along with a strong football IQ, two things Carolina wants in a young up and coming corner.
Talbott will get quite a bit of playing time this upcoming season as he will likely be put ahead of Nolan Carroll II in the depth chart and act as their nickel corner to begin the season.
Here's a breakdown of the rest of Carolina's draft picks:
Round 2 - Zachery Walters - DE - Pittsburgh
Defensive line help is always needed especially when your best defensive ends are aging quickly. Zachary Walters out of Pittsburgh should find himself in and out of the rotation alongside sophmore DE Aramide Stokes and third-year DE Kony Ealy within the next few years as these young guns are slated to take over and lead a dominant pass rushing attack.
Walters will have to fight for his snaps to begin his career in Carolina but if Mario Addison starts off slowly his count may increase very rapidly.
Round 3 - Angel McNeal - HB - Appalach St.
This speed back will get his fair share of the snaps even as a rookie in this run-heavy offense with Jonathan Stewart and Chris Johnson in need of a spell-back. McNeal's speed and elusiveness intrigues Carolina's OC and he'll be sure to draw up a few plays each game to get this 21-year old involved early and often.
Round 3 (Via Titans) - Rannell Harrison - LG - Idaho
Although it may be tough to try and get as much playing time as you'd like sitting behind a fairly young LG like Andrew Norwell, but Rannell Harrison is a very verisitile lineman and the Panthers could move him around if need be,
Round 4 - Adrian Ware - CB - Arizona St.
This Arizona St. product may be on the raw side of things but he should be able to flourish in the system Carolina has set in place. The 23-year old rookie relied on his zone coverage to get the job done and he'll have a fair amount of time to develop his game before the Panthers call on him.
Round 4 (Via Titans) - Parker Cole - LT - Southern Miss
Franchise Quarterbacks like Cam Newton need to stay upright in order to be successful so Parker Cole's time in Carolina will be fairly easy as long as he can do just that.
Round 5 - Tavarius Patton - CB - Central Michigan
When you need 3 corners to fill out your roster you'll need to select guys like Tavarius Patton. The 23-year old could potentially work his way into some solid playing time though as the competiton infront of him is not very stout outside of Josh Normal, Bene Benwikere and Deon Talbott.
Round 6 - Ben Hamilton - QB - Liberty
Hamilton put up some impressive numbers in the Big South Conference during his senior year but was disregarded by scouts left and right simply due to the compeition he's faced. Embodied in a 6'3" frame Hamilton can throw one of the hardest balls around with accurary, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Panthers slot him in as their QB2 to begin the season.
Round 7 - Keshaun Randall - OLB - N.C. State
Randall will get to stick around Carolina a little bit longer as he jumps from N.C. State to the Panthers. Randall may just be a special teams face for the time being, but with a few years under his belt and his impressive speed at the LB position he could work his way into the rotation as his game develops.
