Carolina was on the brink of putting themselves in the postseason conversation when the 2017 season concluded. They finished with a record of 8-8, which was good enough for 3rd in the NFC South.
They came out of the gate on fire but certainly cooled off as the later weeks rolled in. Carolina just wasn't themselves on both sides of the ball, Cam Newton was as effective as he could have been and the team struggled to find a solid balance between running backs Johnathan Stewart and rookie Christian McCaffery.
Defense was another story, they had the talent but things just didn't work out. They'll need a bit of a facelift on this side of the ball but fans expect this to be done fairly easily.
Carolina comes into the 2018 SFL Draft with 6 total picks.
Round 1 - RE - Allen Spencer - 24 - 6'5" - 256 lbs - Wisconsin
Somehow a talent like Allen Spencer fell to the Panthers with the 14th overall pick. Regarded as the draft's unanimous #1 pick this defense adds another vital piece that can change the look of this unit for years to come. Expect to see Spencer starting alongside Mario Addison to begin the 2018 season.
Round 2 - LE - Travonnie Cochran - 22 - 6'3" - 291 lbs - Wisconsin
Carolina decided to keep the duo of Allen Spencer and Travonnie Cochran alive and well with their journey to the NFL. The two demolished opposing quarterbacks in college together and now might find themselves both starting come training camp for this stout Panthers defense.
Round 3 - WR - Derek Booty - 22 - 5'11" - 201 lbs - Texas
Speed has always been a need for this Carolina Panthers' offense, from the addition of Curtis Samuel and Christian McCaffery to now the selection of Derek Booty. Carolina possesses a big target in both Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess, but now with the duo of Samuel and Booty the Panthers' offense has a few more tricks up it's sleeve.
Round 5 -DT - Jordan Levy - 23 - 6'2" - 287 lbs - Texas Tech
Levy likely won't get too many snaps to begin his career here in Carolina, but will act as a viable back-up to Kawaan Short and Allen Bailey. He'll have the chance to learn and develop under one of the league's best defensive tackles, but he'll be competing with the slew of defensive ends too in regards to seeing the field in different packages.
Round 6 - FS - Darrian Mullins - 23 - 6'1" - 215 lbs - S.C. State
He may not challenge Kurt Coleman for the starting job out of the gate, but Mullins possesses raw talent and with a year or two of experience the Panthers could be looking at a steal here in round 6.
Round 7 - QB - Houston Kern - 23 - 6'0" - 219 lbs - Illinois
Not much really to say here, Kern will serve as a back up to Cam Newton and will only see the field if he goes down and Carolina is out of options.
