When the 22-year old vertical threat was drafted in the first-round by the Carolina Panthers this past off-season expectations were high. Brining in another big bodied target would spread the field for Cam Newton and his wide-out corp, but that hasn't been the case.
Through the first 5 games Santiago saw few targets and had even fewer receptions, a total of 8 for 111 yards, although he did score his first career TD in this span. In order for the Panthers' offense to evolve they needed another piece to the puzzle and utilizing Santiago seemed to be it.
The Oregon product saw a massive rise in targets and receptions in this weeks' win over the New Orleans Saints. He went toe-to-toe with New Orelans' playmaker Brandin Cooks, eclipsng Cooks in receptions and matching hin in touchdowns.
Santiago posted a stat line of 13 receptions, 208 yards and 3 TDs, fellow tight end Greg Olsen only saw 4 receptions for 42 yards, but also found the end zone.
"He looks like a new age Gronk out there," said Coach Charles. "He's improving week in and week out, becoming more confident daily and it showed this week."
Moving forward the Panthers will look to involve Santiago more and more each week after this performance, but they can't let this get to their heads and look away from other targets such as Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess, Benjamin only recorded 2 receptions in this contest, with both of then coming in the first quarter.
