As the first round of RML's seasonal draft concluded, 32 prospects have found a new home. Many new and valuable pieces will be added to drafting teams in their quest for RML greatness in the following rounds that will conclude in the next night or so, but the first round is the most sure fire. Below i will analyze picks and teams that drafted so far (FIRST ROUND ONLY) by development, overall, and team fit. Thank you for reading.
Most disappointing pick: Gregory Steele WR to New England Patriots 1st Overall - I will be the first person to admit that Greg Steele was the prospect that looked like the next Randy Moss. This can still become true, however Steele is nothing close to what we had hoped for. Steele's stats still do look pretty great, but slow dev at #1 overall is a burn that hurts even the most stacked of teams. Brad must use every oppotunity in front of him to make sure that Steele can get out of this slow development crevice.
Most controversial pick: Paul Kosier QB to Miami Dolphins 16 Overall - In one of the worst QB draft classes madden has ever put out, Timbo made a risky pick by taking a 5th Round grade in the top half of the first. The Dolphins number 1 need was not a QB, however Drew Brees (40) is on his way out and Blake Bortles is never the answer. Kosier (72 OVR) is a superstar dev and a faster QB, something Dolphins management has not been afraid to say that they want. Kosier's development is key and must be taken seriously this next season if the Dolphins expect any success from Kosier.
Team that gave us the most questions: Joe Bartel's Green Bay Packers - Joe made a solid jump to #3 d took a prospect similar to Gregory Steele in Devin Underwood. Coming off the combine, Underwood looked like the next Ray Lewis. However, the disappointment of slow dev struck another user in the top 3. Although i still believe in Underwood producing great numbers in RML, the Packers next pick is the one that gives me the most question. The Green Bay Packers took Roy Blizzard at #12, and although Blizzard looks like a great prospect, the rookie simply was not a need for the WR heavy Packers. The Packers have defensive holes, and the saying is not "Spread Formation wins championships".
Best overall value pick:Teryan Ellison #18 to Buffalo Bils - Ellison is simply a beast. A 22 YO SS Dev lineman is hard to come by, let alone at 18. DT is not the sexy first round choice some users in this league simply cannot avoid, but Bills paid off by laying low and picking the surefire prospect. The Bills defense will be a wrecking force in the AFC in their quest to take the Eastern throne.
Smartest move in the first round: Trading the fuck out - As much as it pains me to write this, with all of the disappointing draft stories and surprising slow dev players, the best bet for a user was to get as much value possible by trading back or completely out of the first round. This draft seemed rich in talent and that notion quickly disappeared due to the justified reaches and the other disappointing prospects. Not many top tier prospects are left and with many users out of trades, moving out is not an option.
Tonight should be a fun night, but i am positive we all hope that next season's draft is more lucrative (and can we get a 96 Speed 6'4 CB and 85 Overall QB already?!)
