Many of you know Hingle McCringleberry from his time with the Rhinos, but he has since moved on from that career venture. He retired in his prime and he cited that the "three-pump" rule sucked all of the fun out of the game for him and he decided to take up coaching. The RML Raiders snatched him up and although the first 2 seasons were bumpy, he seems to be turning it around. We talk to Hingle about their early success and his expectations for the team in the near future.
BF: Pleasure to talk to you Mr. McCringleberry. Your Raiders have had the best start they have ever had in RML and are sitting pretty at 6-2 right now after only winning 5 games in each of the last 2 seasons. What is the reason for this turnaround?
HM: Definitely our beefed up trenches. The O-Line has been a godsend and my young QB Jimmy Loverne has spent less time on his back than ever after being one of the most sacked QBs in the league. I’ve spent 2 first round picks on the line and traded away Landon Collins in exchange for two more lineman, it’s definitely been worth it.
BF: They say the game is won in the trenches and so far that seems to have been true for you this season. Speaking of Loverne, it’s been reported he has an injury? Can you elaborate on the injury and how long he’ll be out?
HM: He suffered a dislocated elbow against the Broncos in the final seconds of the game(as he was running out of bounds, I might add). He’ll be out for 5 more weeks. Nathan Peterman has been getting first team reps and he should be serviceable for the near future. Not saying it was a dirty play, but it was certainly unnecessary. I’m not sure what kind of system they got over in Denver.
BF: I agree that it is at least borderline dirty, if not worse, and I would be very upset if I were in your shoes. The rematch against Denver should be a chippy one, I would think. Do you really believe Peterman can help you win your next few games?
HM: I think we’ll be putting a heavier workload on our strong running back group and a heavier emphasis on defense as well. I do have confidence in Nathan’s ability to keep the ship afloat, but I don’t think we can maintain the usual shootouts we have without dropping a few games. We’ll see what he can do in practice and the games to come and we’ll see from there.
BF: I see, it will be tough to win without Loverne, but you just have to survive 5 more weeks. You are definitely in a good position at 6-2, but far from guaranteed a playoff spot. So with that said, where do you see this team finishing at the end of the regular season?
HM: I think finishing the season at 4-4 would leave us atop the AFC West just fine, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see us snatch a few more wins. Overall, I’d say we can finish 11-5, but we do have some relarivelye tough competition coming up.
BF: I think that’s fair… it would be quite the story and definitely something I wasn’t expecting. If you make the playoffs do you expect you can compete? How much damage can you do?
HM: I think that definitely depends on a lot of factors, especially injuries. As it stands though, with Loverne back in the saddle, I’d say we can hang with anybody. That being said, there’s a lot of work to be done, and by no means am I expecting a ring or even a conference championship game, but I’d prefer to avoid an early exit.
BF: It should be interesting, I’ll definitely be rooting for you. Good luck the rest of the way and thank you for your time HIngle!
HM: Thank you! It was a pleasure.
