Eagles coach Benjamin Franklin has announced today that while Jase Hallen is definitely still the starter, the Eagles are really liking what they have seen from Joshua Winters and he is going to see an increased role going forward. Winters has played sparingly but has created several very big plays and his averages across the board are significantly better.
Hallen, the 2018 4th overall pick, seemed to turn the corner at the beginning of last season before slowly drifting towards his old ways of ignoring ball protection. He finished with 37 interceptions but perhaps more troubling is his inability to avoid sacks. He has already been sacked over 100 times in his NFL career, including 8 in just 2 games this year.
Joshua Winters was drafted in the 6th round last season. He played very little in his rookie year, going 20 for 39 and 352 yards with a TD and 6 interceptions. This year he has completed 8 of 11 passes for 157 yards and a TD and 2 interceptions but his agility in the pocket and especially a dynamic 39 yard scramble against the Cards really opened up a lot of eyes about his potential.
This is a situation to keep an eye on. We certainly don't expect the Eagles to run a 2 QB system long term but in the mean time it definitely seems that both guys are going to see a significant amount of action with Winters eating into Jase's playing time. Could third string QB Craig Wahle finally see his first NFL action? We think that is unlikely even if Hallen or Winters would be injured but only time will tell.
