After week 6 in season 53 of MickeyLeague; here are the reports of notable rookie QBs who have started, or are currently starting on teams in the league. The analysis for each QB is located below:
-Drake Maye-
Team: Giants
Grade: B+
Stats: 10 Touchdowns, 7 Interceptions, 1,258 Yards, 86:122 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: The Giants as a team are questionable on how they will do, but look to be a .500 team as of now. They could end up being worse than that, or slightly surpass expectations and slide in the playoffs with a Wild Card slot. Drake Maye seems to be doing solid right now and a key part of the offense. Maye is definitely not a bust so far, but the jury is still out if he will be a franchise option for the next 5 seasons or not. Either way it is still important to note he is young, playing good right now, and was a solid day-1 starter this season as he was ready to start as soon as the season started
-Caleb Williams-
Team: Commanders/Redskins
Grade: C+
Stats: 8 Touchdowns, 12 Interceptions, 1,109 Yards, 69:109 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: Caleb Williams got bailed out week 1 due to the fact he had 5 interceptions by the early 2nd quarter before a lag out caused the stats to not save, and glitched causing the Commanders to get the 2-0 win glitch when in reality they were down 14-3. This would have made his stats, and passer rating way worse if that game saved. Caleb currently has a TD/INT ratio of 8:12 while the backup Jacoby Brissett has a TD/INT ratio of 6:2 after subbing in to start because of Caleb Williams getting injured in the season also. Caleb Williams despite the week 1 luck situation, and the injury has had really high-high points in the season, but are cancelled out by really low-low points as well. Caleb Williams will need to be more consistent in his skill, or take a game manager role this season and have RSTSLY find a new piece to run the offense through this season if he is going to have any success.
-Bo Nix-
Team: Buccaneers
Grade: C+
Stats: 7 Touchdowns, 7 Interceptions, 881 Yards, 59:101 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: xMetallyx runs a traditional West Coast offensive style with short runs and passes to set up an occasional suprise deep ball. A game manager QB thrives in this type of offense, and Bo Nix fits that role perfectly. Nix is a good QB to fit in metally's offense and has done what he needs to for metally's system. Nix has not been amazing by any means, but he does not need to be as the offense is ran through other pieces. In other words Bo Nix will not win you the game; but he will not lose you the game either. It is Nix's surroundings, and xMetallyx's coaching that will dictate the win results.
-J.J. McCarthy-
Team: Jets (Drafted by the Cardinals)
Grade: B
Stats: 8 Touchdowns, 4 Interceptions, 634 Yards, 26:58 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: McCarthy's grade could easily skyrocket into the A category later in the season, and only got a starting job recently after the Cardinals traded him to the Jets. Projekt Z8 is good with developing young players, and McCarthy was lucky to get traded to that new situation instead of sitting behind Dak Prescott/Kyler Murray. He got some good mentorship from those 2 QBs for a short time, and now gets to play for a premeire coaching staff led by Projekt Z8 with the Jets. McCarthy has looked impressive and has given the Jets some life on the season. This is also good because if he starts the next season he will have more weapons, as the Jets went to rebuild mode to trade players for draft picks.
-Jayden Daniels-
Team: Patriots
Grade: D-
Stats: 9 Touchdowns, 23 Interceptions, 1,168 Yards, 63:135 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: Daniels has struggled deeply, but part of it is due to a lack of experience as the coaching staff from H is terrible, and the scheme does not fit the style of Daniels either. Daniels is not able to use his deep ball leverage in this scheme, and when he throws deep it is forced due to simple play calling designs, which causes more random deep-ball chuck-ups and interceptions as a result. All of which can be supported by his statline as evidence. Daniels might be a bust simply due to the fact that his coaching staff will fail him. Daniels could have been a breakout star in the league early if the right team with the right scheme got their hands on him, and knew how to use him right. Daniels career can still be good since it is early, but he better hope for a change of ownership or a trade to succeed at his expectations of stardom!!!!
-Michael Penix Jr.-
Team: Saints
Grade: C+
Stats: 9 Touchdowns, 8 Interceptions, 997 Yards, 63:102 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: Penix did not win the starting job in training camp, and did not start week 1 as a result. However, he won the job after week 1 after proving he could still perform as a lefty Quarterback (QB) in his test in week 2 this season. The jury is still out on how well Penix will perform, or if he is the answer long-term. Even if he is not the long term answer he has proven he can be a solid 1-2 year starter for certain teams who need a bridge QB, and has played at a solid level for the Saints (SimpleWhistle94) so far. Penix could still end up being the franchise guy, so do not count him out yet, but more gameplay needs to be seen from him as he missed 3 games this season. He missed 2 games from a suspension, and 1 by not starting week 1
-Jordan Travis-
Team: Saints
Grade: C
Stats: 4 Touchdowns, 3 Interceptions, 557 Yards, 29:61 (Pass/Completion Ratio)
Analysis: Jordan Travis has seemed to be a solid starter for a few games. Nothing special, but gets the job done. He won the starting job week 1, then lost it for the rest of the season to Penix after Penix proved he could still play well while being a lefty. Travis however came back in to play again after Penix suffered a 2-game suspension. Travis seems to be a game manager type QB who can get the job done. If I had to predict his career type today; I would say that Travis would serve as a top tier backup who can occasionally be a 1-year bridge Quarterback starter journeyman on certain teams. In simple terms he can have a similar career to like a Ryan Fitzpatrick, or Josh McCown. I would not expect to see much more action from Travis this season, but he will always be ready incase of injury, future suspension, or if Penix needs to get benched a game or two.
