Power rankings

1. Chargers – The Chargers were hopeful to go undefeated but after suffering the first loss against the Bills they were able to bounce back against the mammoth Steelers. Only needing to win 2 of the remaining 3 games home field advantage is definitely in reach. Offense: Normally you would look straight to Melvin Gordon with this offense but Joey Whitley was able to make substantial strides over the offseason to become an MVP candidate and lead the team to 33 ppg. Trading away 2 first rounders for Derone Desir had many critics wondering but he has been able to add a much needed aspect to the offense. Defense: Shane Ray leads the NFL in sacks and brings the hit stick with 6 forced fumbles. Opposing QBs are definitely on the look out for him once they drop back to pass. The secondary has been as soft as Charmin but should have everyone back by the post-season.

2. Steelers – The 3 time champ is in a great position to make it 4 only suffering loses from the Chargers and Colts. You can look for another deep run in the playoffs for him. Offense: Cam Newton leads the offense averaging 29 ppg. With Martavis Bryant, Ladarius Green, Lincoln Downs, and an abundance of other weapons you never know where the ball is going. Defense: Boasting the #1 scoring defense at 12 ppg it’s nearly impossible to put up points against the Steelers. Ryan Shazier leads the way with 11 interceptions, but don’t hold on to the ball too long with Neiron Strahan and Dareon Calhoun with 15 and 13 sacks respectively. This Steelers defense will leave your shirt soaked in sweat by the end of the game if you can keep it close.

3. 49ers – In his first full year I the league he has taken the annual laughing stock 49ers to an 11-2 record. It wouldn’t be shocking to see the 49ers representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. Offense: With MVP candidate Derek Flacco leading the leagues top scoring offense scoring is never a problem. Don’t look for just one person doing the work. It is truly a team game with the 49ers. You can’t focus too much on Flacco with speedster Parker Gatson in the backfield. Defense: Avery Williamson mans the defense along with veteran Eric Reid. #1 in rushing defense making opposing teams one dimensional is how 49ers gets it done.

4. Colts – When you watch one of Colts games you don’t think much of him. His conservative approach may have viewers turning off the TVs but it keeps the wins coming in. Offense: Former #1 overall pick Jared Goff leads the offense averaging 23 ppg with help from Tevin Coleman. A big injury to Mike Evans has slowed down the offense but he should be back in the playoffs. Defense: Only allowing opponents to put up 12 ppg trying to drive down the field against the Colts will only give you a headache. Boasting one of the best secondaries in the league

5. Eagles – Consistently one of the best in the NFC, the Eagles are looking to make it back to the Super Bowl where they haven’t been since season 1. Offense: Former MVP Karlos Williams Sr isn’t making the impact he once was but he provides a good counter to Carson Wentz’s passing attack. Defense: Arthur Dean and Trey Williamson have been able the backbone to the Eagles defense this season. Ranking 8th in total yards and points, not only is the Eagles stingy in the endzone but stingy in letting the opponent gain yards anywhere on the field

6. Panthers – Currently leading the NFC South, the Panthers control their destiny to the playoffs. Offense: In Paxton Lynch’s first season in Carolina he has had his ups and down but is finally settling down in the most important stretch of the season. With Jelani Pennel and Sherman Draughn both having 10+ touchdown receptions they are quickly turning the Queen City into the Twin City. Defense: The 6th ranked passing defense is creates hell for opposing offenses in such a pass heavy time in the league. It appears the only option is to hope you can have a strong running game.

7. Patriots – Suffering his first loss in the AFC East in 3 seasons putting the Patriots at 11-1 in the past 3 seasons within the division has not caused too much turmoil in New England. Although the Patriots do not control their own destiny they are right in mix for their third straight playoff appearance. Offense: With a plethora of speedy receivers and dynamic RB Malik Moon coming back from injury, it is an offense that can leave you more confused on what’s coming next than the audience at a David Blaine show. It’s all up to Zachary Prather making the correct read which has not happened at times with 23 interceptions. Defense: The defensive numbers don’t look great giving up 24 ppg but once you get behind the sticks you realize it’s no walk in the park with Dexter Rich manning the middle of the field.

8. Texans – With his next 3 games against opponents with winning records the Texans need to be in full throttle the rest of the season to become back-to-back champs. Offense: With dual-threat Derek Freeny getting to learn all last season behind Aaron Rodgers he has been able to show great maturation, but still needs to make better decision making with 22 interceptions. Look for Freeny to either be the hero or the goat for the rest of the season for the Texans. Defense: With one of the best front 7s to ever be assembled, opposing offenses are in a whirlwind like Mr Krabs from the Spongebob episode. Either it’s JJ Watts or Clowney hitting you from the blindside or Lamar Laws swooping in for another interception, this defense is never to be messed with.

9. Jags – Champ has finally woke up and decided to win some games. Who knows what the future will hold for the Jaguars but they are in a good position this year. Offense: In this offense there’s always going to be bombs thrown, but most surprisingly Jags has found a running game with DeMar Morse. At 6’3” 237 he’s one of the biggest backs in the league, but has deceptive speed Defense: The Jags have been great with stopping the run this season, but stopping the pass has been a huge problem. On the brink of defeat against the Browns, Dain Whiting was able to come up with the most clutch interception of the season so far and will definitely be receiving votes for DB of the year.

T10. Saints – Ever since losing to Steelers in the Super Bowl the Saints haven’t been the same since. Fans in Who Dat nation are hoping this is their turnaround season and hopeful for another Super Bowl Appearance. Offense: With Brandin Cooks close to 2000 receiving yards, that’s where the offense starts and stops. Jaron Griggs is the leading rusher with only 345 yards so to say he is a threat would be an overstatement. With an offense so one dimensional you can see why the Saints have been struggling down the stretch. Defense: Lorell John is leading the defense with 10 interceptions. While there’s not many bright spots in a defense allowing 22 ppg John is always the backbone of this defense and only 4 interceptions away from a career high.

T10. Jets – In his first full season Jets is making a run for the playoffs. Jets controls their destiny and have the fans hopeful to finally have a post season game at Metlife stadium that’s not a Giants game. Offense: Journeyman Tyrod Taylor has bounced around the league but he may have finally found a home in NY. Being a placeholder for Theodore Cameron may have helped to only increase his stock come the offseason. With one of the most dynamic passing games in the league, gameplanning against NYJ will give any opposing defense a headache. Defense: With the 31st rushing defense, opposing offenses have been knocking through the defensive line easier than the Kool Aid man. It’s been joked throughout the league that Jets fans watch the commercial and take their bathroom break when the defense is on the field.
