Here we go AGAIN with a Coaching Hire for Detroit, we will bring you the press conference including Brad Holmes, Ben Johnson, and a few words from Sheila Ford herself.
- Sheila Ford.
"Hello again everyone, thank you for coming to our press conference on the hiring of our Head Coach. Right now I can say our internal search is over, we had our friend Calvin come in and right the ship, as one might say, after the departure of Coach Campbell.
Now we are set to let our captain take hold of the wheel. We've been negotiating with our Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson after he returned from personal time he took. Now we can confindently say we've found our coach of the future and have come to terms with Ben Johnson as the new Head Coach of the Detroit Lions."
- Ben Johnson, Head Coach of the Detroit Lions.
"Well all I can say is that was a roller coaster wasn't it? I'm Excited, I also feel loss, I don't think I can fill the shoes of the man before me, and I plan to lead us in the same direction Coach Campbell was taking us. The group of guys we got here is special, and I plan to keep it that way for the near future and beyond, especially be-because Dan taught me in the last few years that this is a family, it has to be to overcome such adversity. I'd like to thank my family, my agent, Shiela Ford, and Brad Holmes for giving me this chance and the strength to pull this whole thing together, which I have faith in.
I'm interesting in getting this thing kicked off and into the regular season, I assume everyone has questions a-about the draft and who was in the room calling the shots and- we've been working on this class for months. We've discussed how we wanted to attack this draft with Dan before he decided to move on, and we came to a decision that our concepts were solid, our board was solid, and we could get who we wanted, and I think we hit on more than we missed.
Without further delay I think we can hit some of this out with a few questions."
- Q: Angry Fist Weaver Free Press, Josh Mcgee:
"Congratulations Coach, with all this new information I think we're all interested in how you will be approaching the pace of this team, do you plan on changing the tempo, or is this exactly where you want to be."
- A:
"It's important to keep what we have and build on it, I believe, what we've built is something I think is special. The spirit of this team is going to propell us out of whatever projection we've been going towards these last few decades. Yeah I think we'll keep on track, put some more coal in the fire."
- Q: One Monk Sports, Jash Mackee:
"If you can speak on it, how close was the tempation to take another Head Coaching position over this? Assuming you knew this was going to happen all along."
- A:
"It was, let's say it, interesting to say the least. I had good talks with other teams about taking positions as their Head Coach knowing in the back of my mind there was something stirring here with a few conversations I had with Dan. We knew about halfway through those talks he was planning on stepping down so there was pretty much no doubt in my mind I wanted to stick with my guys at that point. Before that I was probably only going to be swayed by a larger offer, not out of the question by a few teams given the field they had to choose from at that point."
This Q/A keeps going on for 15mins and we'll put the entire transcript on our website later today. We come back to Brad Holmes with his closing remarks regarding Coach Johnson and the team as a whole.
- Brad Holmes, GM of the Detroit Lions.
"Thank you for coming to this conference everyone, as you well know we had our draft recently and Ben spoke on that briefly. We feel very strongly about this group of guys man, this group is just the next stepping stone for the future and we're really excited to get these guys in the building. These next few weeks we'll be going through our roster, unfortunately without Hard Knocks for you folks so stay tuned for our social media team and our press team to release information on that.
Stay tuned for us guys we got a lot to come and a lot to do. Go Lions."
Without any more to go on we are excited, with free agent pickups this offseason HOT already the lions are looking to develop and keep this tempo going into the 2023-24 season. It's looking good and can really only go up from here.
