NFC South Preview

Carolina Panthers

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: 3 Super Bowl appearances and wins in 4 seasons, 4 straight conference championship appearances, 5 straight division titles, postseason record of 12-3 and a overall record of 102-26.....This is how the Panthers ended the cycle in Madden 18. This team started off slow making the playoffs once in the first 3 seasons but once they got rolling it was a wild ride. The secondary had 4 1st team AP members and DeShone Kizer has most of his success in Carolina. This team was built into greatness through great drafts and development and it shows with the final product you see on the field with 10 AP selections tying with the Jags and Browns. Due to the team being so stacked which led to a 59-5 record over the last 4 seasons. This team was the most successful team in the league in Madden 18 and the numbers show it.
  • Preview to Madden 19: With the same user returning to the ship to try and sustain the performance from Madden 18 that will be a tall task. This Panthers squad needs help with a lot of the better players being older, a bad offensive line and an even worse secondary. There will definitely be an adjustment to try and draft the right guys, retain key young talent and develop those guys into players that this team needs. The division has also gotten better which can also be problematic. The good thing is that the user finds a way to get it done though, so I expect this team to play well, maybe not quite reach the height of last cycle but they can definitely make noise.

Atlanta Falcons

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: Welcome to the fall off is what you can say about the Falcons from this cycle. The success early was immense with 2 seasons, a 28-4 record that had 2 different users and 2 Super Bowls to go with it, but then this team never got back to the playoffs again finishing at 70-58 overall. After those 2 Super Bowls and missing the playoffs with an 11-5 Record the Falcons never quite caught that magic again that made them special. Users were in and out til they got some stability the lasts couple seasons from the current user Matthew. Out of the gate this team was a problem but they never got better as time went along as they let guys get old and didn’t replace them with fresher faces. Matthew showed promise with a 10-6 record the 2nd to last season of the cycle with no playoff berth so it didn’t end as bad as the middle area of the cycle.
  • Preview to Madden 19: The Falcons come in loaded up on talent and a perfect combination of youth and established veterans. Matthew has proven to be a pretty good user so him having the keys to build this team with such a great foundation should be something to see. The division may be tough but when you have one the best rated teams in the league that helps tremendously. With Matt Ryan getting older I’m sure it’ll be a priority to find a replacement to continue the legacy of Julio and start Ridley’s legacy. Jones on the defensive side should have a huge impact as well, so this team should be fun to watch as they show this division and the league what they do.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: The Bucs were a team that seemed like they were almost there but never quite got it with the exception of 2 seasons when they went 13-3 in one and 14-2 in the other. 3 different users across the cycle and this team still finished with a 66-62 overall record which is good to see that they had good guys running the team. The most consistent and successful user though would have to be the current user Connor, he built the team how he wanted and ended up being 14-2. Atwater and DJ became faces of this franchise in their times at the organization and it currently the second longest tenured NFC South member behind the Panthers user. The Bucs had a really solid cycle and they showed some promise but couldn’t quite get there all the time.
  • Preview to Madden 19: Connor being able to start with his hometown Bucs should bode well for the team despite the less than spectacular roster. He has proven to be one of the better users in the league and even though the division will be a handful he should make his claim that he won’t be bullied. Calling the division the NFC Smashsouth, Connor plans to let his running game do the talking and impose his will. This team may be the lowest rated team in the division to start but with the user’s ability to draft well and develop guys this team won’t be there for long.

New Orleans Saints

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: The Saints are probably one of the best stories of the cycle with how this team got constructed to become the team they were in their lone playoff berth season. JR drafted extremely well and the scary thing is that his ability to develop players is on par if not better than his skills to draft. Unfortunately that’s the only real highlights to the Saints run in the cycle as they finished at 46-80-2 and were the only team in the division to end the cycle under .500. For as many great players as they had only 2 performed at a high level and neither were the guy that many people in the league believed to be the best QB drafted in league history. A lot of underwhelming performances from guys that could’ve been so much more so it left a lot to be desired but as far as talent this team was easily one of the more talented teams in the league they just couldn’t quite live up to it.
  • Preview to Madden 19: With JR gone the Saints will have a new user running it and that will be the very successful Kripps who led the Jags through a great cycle. This team comes in as the most talented team in the division with nothing but young talent to develop aside from the QB position. The team has a lot of promise just off the roster alone, add in the user and this team could potentially run the South and take the crown from the Panthers that has been owned by that team for the last 2 cycles. Drew Brees retiring after a season could be a problem but I’m sure Kripps will find a suitable replacement in the draft to take the reigns and stretch the success across the cycle.

Division Predictions

  • Most Successful: Taking roster talent and user into account it’s hard to pick against Kripps and his Saints, but based off history the Panthers should be able to make this claim when the dust settles on the cycle. This division is loaded with 4 capable users that could take the crown each season but I think the Panthers will be consistent leading to the most success.
  • User(s) to Watch: Everyone in this division is a user to watch but I think Matthew and that Falcons team could be problematic as the cycle goes on especially with the base talent as a foundation to build his team on.
  • Team That Will Struggle: I think any of these teams could be here at certain points in the cycle but the Bucs have arguably the least talented roster with arguably the most work that needs to be done for them to be the team Connor wants them to be.
  • Breakout Star: I think with Alvin Kamara’s ability to do everything that he would be the breakout star in a division with so many good running backs. It also helps that Kripps has a history of having a good running game.
  • Most Likely to Win a Super Bowl: With the Panthers being the only user in this division that has the experience of getting to and winning the Super Bowl, I think they’re the safe choice here. The roster needs work but it’s hard to go against 4 appearances and 3 wins in 2 cycles.
