AFC East Preview

New England Patriots

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: The Patriots had a pretty solid stretch in madden 18 with a couple different users at the helm ending with a 78-50 overall record. There’s also 5 playoff appearances, 2 division titles, 2 conference championship appearances and a super bowl appearance. Sports came in with a bang and coached this team to a 36-12 record in his 1st 3 seasons and almost came away with a championship in the 2nd season. He really set the tone of what this team wanted to model going forward prior to the upcoming struggles for the next couple seasons where they finished 5-11 twice in a row. Insert Grid who took this team back to the days of playing good football, unfortunately without similar postseason success, posting an 8-8 record in his first full season and back to back 12-4 seasons to finish out Madden 18. The Patriots ended the cycle with the best record in the AFC East by 8 wins so they had a very successful cycle despite 3 seasons they finished .500 or worse.
  • Preview to Madden 19: In the next cycle we will have a new Patriots owner that is a new comer to the league being here for just the final season of the last cycle. JRowe will look to continue this Patriots winning culture in the next cycle after a pretty decent showing in his only season last cycle with the Redskins by winning the division, making the playoffs and winning a game when he got there. The big thing for the Patriots is how will this roster look after the first couple seasons with so many older guys at important positions particularly QB. Watching this team evolve in the first couple seasons should be nice to see, so let’s see if they carry the momentum from Madden 18 to Madden 19 with a new used at the helm.

Miami Dolphins

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: Let’s just start by saying that the Dolphins struggled to hit their stride in Madden 18 with users going in and out of the door with this team. They had the 2nd least amount of wins in the entire league across 8 seasons last year only topping 5+ wins once in a 7-9 campaign the first season of the cycle. Part of the reason for the struggles is because the base roster for the Dolphins isn’t really great, add in questionable roster moves, not hitting in the draft consistently and struggles with keeping people manning the ship is a spell for disaster. 34-93-1 across 8 seasons is a tough break and shows just how much love this team didn’t get due to their poor performance.
  • Preview to Madden 19: With a new coach taking over in Madden 19 the Dolphins look as if they can have a more successful cycle. The former Jets user the first 3 seasons of Madden 18 is staying in the AFC East at the start of this cycle as he looks to make this Dolphins team more relevant in Madden 19. The roster isn’t really great from jump so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes about building this roster. Could he gut it and start from scratch? Try to load up on talented vets to make a playoff push? Could he just do it organically and build as he goes along while keeping pieces that he has? These are all different ways he can go about making this team make noise as he took a bad Jets team to 9-6-1 and 2 straight 10-6 records early in the madden 18 cycle.

New York Jets

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: The Jets had some success early and late with a dull middle period in the cycle similar to the Patriots with not as much success coming til the last couple seasons. Early on, the now Dolphins user, led this team to 3 straight winning seasons rallying at least 9 wins but they struggled to get a birth in the post season with the AFC being loaded up on talent. The next 3 seasons they struggled posting marks at 3-13, 6-10 and 4-12 as they struggled to regain that early success. In the offseason before season 7, Suf took this team and made a lot of moves to ensure he had success through the end of the cycle by trading for vets. That strategy worked out great for him as he won the division and posted a 15-1 record for the 2nd seed in the AFC, making it to the Super Bowl before losing to the Panthers in a heartbreaker. He then followed up that season with another division title and 2nd seed berth. Overall the Jets had a really good stretch at the end of Madden 18 and Suf helped put this team on the map as well as himself.
  • Preview to Madden 19: Building this Jets team to be in position for the success they had in the last cycle will be a tall task. The good thing about this team is they do have young guys at some key positions including Sam Darnell at QB which is a good place to start from. The user taking over this team was very successful during the M17 cycle so maybe he can recapture that lightning and continue the success that Suf had the last couple seasons and Jeff before him. This team doesn’t have a lot so a rebuild is in order but having good young players can help speed this process along if they develop well.

Buffalo Bills

  • Review of Seasons 6-13: The Bills were really good til the last couple seasons of the cycle. They captured 4 straight division titles and a Super Bowl appearance in what was a great run from the 3rd season of the cycle through the 6th season of the cycle. Compiling a record of 50-14 overall, 38-10 in conference and a 22-2 division record the Bills looked like a juggernaut in the AFC and that’s not even counting the 11-5 record that was posted before that dominant stretch . The last couple seasons were really down years but even with that the Bills ended up only 8 wins behind the Patriots in total for the cycle. Bobby, Splooge or Owen....whichever you wanna call him put together one of the more successful runs in the league this cycle and he made this team a problem in the league. Now that he’s moving on to another squad for Madden 19 let’s see if the Bills can sustain that level of consistency this team had during their dominant stretch.
  • Preview to Madden 19: This team comes in with some pretty impressive young pieces to build with and around on both sides of the ball. The new user for this team is elated to have this pieces and combine the young talent with a user that was successful when engaged during the Madden 18 cycle and this could breed something special. Bishes is taking this team over an looks to recreate the success he had with the Bengals during the madden 18 cycle. He’s ready to get this team rolling and make a push for a title with this Bills team. It’ll be interesting to see how he builds on the foundation of this squad but I’m sure he’ll make it happen and do it and good fashion.

Division Predictions

  • Most Successful: The Bills should have the most overall success with a historically successful user at the helm along with a good foundation for him to build on. This team could be one of the more successful teams of the cycle in the league but as far as the division I think I’m going with the Bills
  • User(s) to Watch: I think the user to watch in this division is gonna be JRowe. In a limited body of work he had success in his one and only season in the league thus far. It’ll be interesting to see if it was just a one hit wonder or if he can make things happen in a division with a top 10 of the cycle user from Madden 18. He’s definitely a guy to watch this upcoming cycle. Jeff is also someone to watch as he typically performs well. That Dolphins team is a tough build but I think he has the ability to handle the situation well. The biggest question with him is if he sticks around to see this team potentially come to fruition for him.
  • Team(s) That Will Struggle: It’s tough to see whether the Jets hit their stride or not this cycle. Granted the coach has been successful in the league before but he skipped out on Madden 18 so there’s no telling whether he can get the fire back. Another thing is that this roster is bad, so it’ll be interesting to see how he builds the squad which could change this prediction.
  • Breakout Star: The player that I think will be the breakout star from the base roster is Josh Allen. He has the things he needs to be successful with a user that builds great teams, young WR’s to grow with, Shady toting the rock, along with some young pieces on defense that should be huge for this team.
  • Most Likely to Win a Super Bowl: It’s hard to argue against the Bills in this scenario as they have a user that’s been to 3 Super Bowls between Madden 17 and 18. He’s shown the consistency to make it happen so it’s hard to pick against this team but we shall see as the cycle progresses
