The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a blistering 5-0 start due to their defense. Coming off a huge performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who prior to this game were in the top 5 in offensive yards per game and scoring per game, the Jag’s defense was able to intercept Big Ben 9 times and hold their vaunted offense to just 56 passing yards.
The Jaguars are second against the pass, thanks to their outstanding secondary play. The secondary in Jacksonville has held opponents to a miniscule 136 yards per game in the air, although that is impressive, the most impressive stat comes in the take-away department. Through just 5 games this young defense has 25 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles. This defense is explosive, evidenced by the 10 TDs they have also scored. Jalen Ramsey, their second year superstar corner, believes they are better that the Legion of Boom from a few years back and it’s not even close.
The Jaguars have received steady QB play from Bortles, but are looking for him to step up in the next few weeks. Bortles started off hot over the first 3 games (6 TD passes and 1 interception), but has struggled in the last few games (0 TD passes, 3 Interceptions). Bortles had this to say, “In the beginning of the year passing windows seemed to be larger and guys weren’t breaking on the footballs this effectively. I need to be more aware of downs and field position.” The new owner has also decided to levy fines against Bortles, for every interception Bortles will be forced to spend a day with the Bengals owner.
The Jaguars feel that they could run the table this year and join the 72’ Dolphins as the only teams in NFL history to go through both the regular season and post season unscathed.
