So ends another disappointing season in Miami under coach Don Shula. The Dolphins went 6-10 in a competitive division.
There were some wins but more losses than anything. The trade of Tarik Cohen shook the league and proved to be a major mistake for the Dolphins. The assumption was that bring Chris Carson as a redzone threat would alleviate some of the teams redzone turnover problems. However, Carson proved to be a fumble prone back in the redzone and someone that could not find and hit the holes for any amount of yardage. Late in the season, in desperation, the Dolphins traded a first to bring in Joe Muxon and provide some upside.
Despite having two 1000 yard receivers and a TE over 750, they were middle of the pack as far as offense goes. Ranking in the bottom third as a defensive unit did nothing to aid the team. And what seemed like a solid offensive line at the beginning of the season, this unit allowed 39 sacks on mobile qb Marcus mariota.
There is promise on the horizon. The defensive line has vastly improved with the addition of Derrick Brown, Nick Coe and Arik Armstead. If the line can continue to grow and other defensive needs are met, the lackluster offense may not be such a huge handicap.
Without a playoff run next season, head coach Don Shula is unlikely to return.
