OAKLAND RAIDERS 2017 SEASON PREVIEW
QB Derek Carr - Derek is the perfect fit in Coach Hoepf's offense. He has a very strong arm, and can also make plays on the ground. We are expecting him to be a leader on and off the field and he leads this team to the promised land.
QB E.J. Manuel - E.J. is a very promising backup that can definitely get the job, if something were to ever happen to Derek. He has dual threat ability, which is a plus in Coach Hoepf's offense.
HB Marshawn Lynch - Beast mode will be the 1st and 2nd down back for this power run Raiders squad. He will also be expected to do some occasional pass blocking as well on 3rd down.
HB Doug Martin - Muscle hamster was a great offseason addition. He brings a mean streak and power run style to the scheme Coach Hoepf is trying to run. He will thrive as the goalline back. We expect Martin to have at least 10 touchdowns on the season.
HB. Jalen Richard - Jalen is a good reserve that can stretch the field on outside runs and help in the return game a bit.
HB. DeAndre Washington - DeAndre has some of the same traits that Jalen has. He will be a good asset on special teams.
FB Lee Smith - Converted tight end Lee Smith is an excellent run blocker that will get about 10-12 snaps a game, and will occasionally catch a pass out of the backfield. We expect him to clear the way for Marshawn and Doug.
FB Keith Smith - Keith will serve as a backup fullback in case something tragic happens to Lee, he will also be occasionally put in as an extra blocker in heavy sets.
WR Amari Cooper - Amari is our prized receiver, he will do most of his work from the outside. We will occasionally have him work out of the slot. He will be the go to target on all of the timing routes and sometimes we will send him deep when we see man coverage. He will have around 5-10 touches a game.
WR Martavis Bryant - Martavis was the best aquisition of the whole offseason. His size and speed is undeniable. He will stretch the field, but also be an asset on timing routes and occasional run plays. Coach Hoepf is excited to utilize Martavis much better than Coach Tomlin did.
WR Jordy Nelson - Jordy was a nice addition to the offense. He will be our slot receiver this year. He also is a nice veteran to mentor our young guys like Curtis Samuel and Marcell Ateman.
WR Ryan Switzer - We received Ryan in a trade with the Cowboys in the most recent draft. He was acquired by the previous staff, and doesn't really fit Coach Hoepf's scheme. He will only be used if something tragic happens to all of the wide receivers on the roster.
WR Johnny Holton - Johnny has some good potential as an eventual outside receiver. He has some good spped that we could capitalize on with some deep balls.
WR Marcell Ateman (R) - Marcell is an intriguing rookie. He has a rare blend of size and speed. He is 6'4" with a 4.5 40 time. He will see limited action this year, but will be an asset going forward.
WR Curtis Samuel - Curtis will be our primary kick and punt returner this season. He may get an occasional carry here or there.
TE Jared Cook - Jared is an exceptional additional to our offense. He is a good run blocker, but he also is an excellent vertical threat. He has a big frame and good speed. He will be able to stretch the field and be an assest in the red zone offense.
TE Derek Carrier - Derek has top end speed, and is a decent run blocker. He will be hitting the seam on most of his routes mainly being a decoy to tun off the safety.
LT Donald Penn - Donald has about one good year left in him. His primary focus is to protect Carr and be a veteran leader on this relatively young squad.
LG Kalechi Osemele - Kalechi is a great all around blocker. He is the best of this great group of blockers.
C Rodney Hudson - Rodney brings high football IQ and veteran leadership to this squad. He already is one of the best centers in football, is is ready to lead this group to become one of the best oline's in football this season.
C James Stone - James is great depth to this team. He is a decent blocker and can fill in at all oline positions if needed.
RG Gabe Jackon - Gabe is young and already one of the best guards in football. He is exceptionally strong and a great pass blocker, and he has been working very hard on his run blocking this past offseason.
RT Kolton Miller (R) - 1st round draft pick is a monster of a man at 6'8", he is ready to show the league what all that hype is about.
RT Vadal Alexander - Vadal is a good backup that can fill in at any position on the line if needed.
LE Tank Carradine - Tank is a great fit in Coach Hoepf's 3-4 defense. He has good blockshed, and a nasty power move, and also is quite quick for a man his size. He will be responsible to take on double teams and open up holes for our linebackers to accelerate through for tackles.
LE Treyvon Hester - Treyvon is good depth for a defense that likes to rotate a bunch of guys in on a nightly basis.
LE Eddie Vanderdoes - Eddie is good depth for a defense that likes to rotate a bunch of guys in on a nightly basis.
NT Justin Ellis - Justin is an ideal fit at nose tackle in Coach Hoepf's defense. He will be relyed upon to eat up double teams, but also has the strength and quickness to not only be an effective run stopper, but also an issue on passing downs.
NT PJ Hall (R) - Rookie PJ Hall will get plenty of playing time this year in a defense that loves to keep guys fresh and use plenty of situational subs. PJ will mostly be used on passing downs, as he impressed the coaching staff with his freakish athleticism for a man his size. He ran a 4.8 40, put up 36 reps in the bench press, and has a 38 inch vertical. He also had a staggering 14 blocked kicks in college. Watch out for PJ in the coming seasons.
NT Darius Latham - Darius is good depth for a defense that likes to rotate a bunch of guys in on a nightly basis.
RE Maurice Hurst (R) - Maurice fell all the way to the 5th round because of an unknown heart condition. He was once thought of as a potential 1st rounder. We had him checked out before the draft and believe we got a steal of a player in Maurice. He is strong, quick, and has a mean streak that opposing lineman will soon find out about. We will monitor his condition going forward, but we believe he will be an integral part of our defense in the present and future.
RE Mario Edwards Jr - Mario is good depth for a defense that likes to rotate a bunch of guys in on a nightly basis. He also has excellent hit power that scares opposing quarterbacks.
LOLB Arden Key (R) - Arden in terms of talent is easily one of the top 5 guys in this previous draft. He fortunately fell right into our lap in the 3rd round because of a few failed drug tests. He came clean to us in pre draft interviews and we feel he is ready to turn his life around and become one of the greatest defensive players to ever play the game. He has insane measurables at 6'6" 240 he ran a 4.7 40 and is an aggressive hitter. The coaching staff loves him so much that they moved Khalil Mack inside to make room for Arden to start at LOLB.
MLB Khalil Mack - Khalil made the transition to MLB this past offseason. He is fast, strong, and has very high football iq, we don't have any doubt that he will make a seamless transition to MLB. He will still have plenty of opportunities to rush the passer, but we believe he will be more deadly crushing people as they come across the middle.
MLB Tahir Whitehead - Tahir is an excellent run stopper, and that's exactly what we will have him do. He will play strictly in 3-4 sets and some special teams.
MLB Marquel Lee - Marquel is not exceptionally fast but he has good football iq and will be an asset if someone happens to go down.
MLB Emmanuel Lamur - Emmanuel is an exceptional cover linebacker. He will play a bit on passing downs, and would immediately become a starter if Khalil were to ever go down.
ROLB Bruce Irvin - Bruce is one of the fastest linebackers in the league. He will be a terror to opposing quarterbacks as a pass rusher and a coverage guy. We expect Bruce to have 10+ sacks and 5+ picks on the year.
ROLB James Cowser - James will be expected to be an elite special teams player and probably not much more.
CB Rashaan Melvin - Rashaan was the offseason aquisition we needed. He immediately becomes our number 1 corner and will be expected to shut down the opposing teams number 1 receiver in every game this year.
CB Gareon Conley - Gareon was a monster at Ohio State as a shutdown corner. He is an excellent number 2 guy opposite Rashaan. Mark my words, Gareon will lead the Raiders in interceptions in the upcoming season.
CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - DRC was an excellent pre-season week 4 signing. He immediately becomes our nickle corner, and will bully opposing slot receivers with his elite size.
CB Nick Nelson (R) - Nick will be the nickle after this season. He will look to DRC as a veteran mentor to get him ready for next season. He will also thrive on special teams.
CB Dexter McDonald - Dexter is good depth that will help out on special teams.
CB Daryl Worley - Daryl is good depth that will help out on special teams.
CB Tevin Mitchel - Tevin is good depth that will help out on special teams.
FS Obi Melifonwu - Obi is a surprise starter at free safety for this relatively young Raiders squad. He has elite speed and size, and also hits like a truck. Expect great things out of Obi this season.
FS Marcus Gilchrist - Marcus is a playmaking safety that can play either spot. He is the backup to both Obi and Karl.
SS Karl Joseph - Karl is young and a big hitter. He has decent speed and knows the game very well. By the end of the season teams will not want to go deep knowing what is waiting for them back there.
SS Shalom Luani - Shalom is exclusively a special teams guy. He is a heavy hitter so expect a few forced fumbles out of him.
K Giorgio Tavecchio - Giorgio has decent kick power and decent accuracy. Coach Hoepf loves guys will great kick power so don't be surprised if Giorgio isn't on the roster by seasons end.
P Colby Wadman - Colby is an accurate punter that consistently will put teams inside their own 20.
Going forward the Raiders expect to be contenders for this division and expect to be a fixture in the playoffs in the present and future. We are projecting to go 10-6 this season and hope to have a top offense and defense. Go Raiders!
