The NFL draft just finished up one day ago. Who are the early big winners and losers of the draft?
Winners
The Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals had worked to trade most of their talent away in order to build through the draft. What did they get in return? They picked up CB Darren Roberts, the consensus top player in the draft, a potential number one WR in Matt Newman, and a new HB in Steven Bartee. However, the Cardinals didn’t draft a QB until the fifth round, leaving many question marks at the position.
The New Orleans Saints: After having an offensive line that gave up 38 and 27 sacks in back to back years, the Saints worked to rebuild their line through the draft, acquiring Guards Rommell Porter and Dionte Bush. They also picked up Tackle Maka Kasper and looked to get a more consistent pass rusher opposite Vic Beasley in top pick George Farley.
Losers
The Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers didn’t come into the draft with that many picks. According to multiple sources, they were attempting to trade Dak Prescott, who is coming off of a 36 interception season. However, no teams came calling. The Steelers didn’t fill any holes on their roster. Their best player selected may have been a fullback.
The Denver Broncos: The Broncos didn’t have a first round pick in this draft. This was a year where they needed to get good players in the late round. However, most of the players they selected were developmental prospects. Wide receiver Anthony Sanders’ route running will need a lot of work. Defensive end Rashard Long’s tackling and blocking shedding will need to get better in order for him to contribute at the next level. The Broncos did have a bright spot in Safety Grant Wiggins, a hard hitting coverage player.
