The Saul Goodman era began in week 4 as the Broncos traveled to Nashville to face the Titans. It was a game of two halves as the Broncos overcame a 21-3 halftime deficit. Denver trailed 21-10 heading into the 4th but rallied to score 3 td's to complete the comeback and seal the victory 31-21.
Jake Browning was impressive in his first start, finishing with a QB rating of 118.5. He completed 85% of his passes, threw two td's but had 1 pick. The defense compiled 6 sacks, led by Ira Lewis with 2. Chris Harris Jr., did what Chris Harris Jr. does, finished the game with two interceptions. Undrafted rookie Noah Furbush also picked off Mariota. It kind of felt like a fairy tale ending but I was hoping the momentum would carry into the game with KC.
Unfortunately, KC made the discrepancy of talent clear from the start as they cruised their way to a dominating 31-10 victory. The game was far more lopsided than the score indicates. The Chiefs could've nearly did anything they wanted to offensively but let off the gas early on. They had little reason to be worried with Denver's offense struggling to move the chains.
With one game appearing somewhat lucky and the other game appearing far inferior the jury is still out on this Denver Broncos team. The next two weeks, leading into their week 8 bye, could have serious implications on the future of this team. Entering the bye at 4-3 could have the new owner wanting to buy before the trade deadline. A 2-5 record could be a bye-bye for many as they go in a new direction.
The 1970 Broncos home opener was a week 2 match-up vs the Steelers. With a sold out crowd behind them, Denver edged out Pittsburgh 16-13 and improved to 2-0. At the time, nobody would've described that day as historic. 50 years later, the significance continues to grow. That day began the consecutive home sellout streak of 400 &counting.
It's hard to argue the Denver Broncos' fans aren't one of the top fan bases in all of sports. They deserve most of the credit for the record breaking streak but they've had it pretty damn good. The Broncos acquired phenom prospect, rookie QB John Elway in 1983. A year later, Pat Bowlen purchased the Broncos. Over his 35+ years as owner, Mr. B cemented the Broncos as one of the finest organizations in all of professional sports. The Broncos had the highest winning % in the league during Mr B's tenure. They were crowned AFC Champs 7 times and brought home 3 Lombardi's. Mr. B's impact on the NFL, city of Denver, and Bronco country was felt much further than the success of the team on the field. Pat Bowlen was widely respected and was the personification of class.
For the last few years, after we learned of Mr. B's declining health, we've all been dreading the inevitable day where Pat Bowlen would no longer own the Denver Broncos. No one could ever successfully follow Mr. B. Even if they were perfect it would take decades to earn the same level of admiration. Pat Bowlen's influence reached millions and he will be missed.
In late September, the Pat Bowlen era ended. The Broncos organization was purchased by an investment group led by majority owner Saul Goodman. Goodman is a self described, life-long, die-hard Bronco fan. But who is Saul Goodman? Goodman hales from Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was an attorney with his brother. "Growing up a few hours from Denver, we were huge fans. We would make the drive up interstate 25 every year to watch a game." said Goodman in his opening press conference. Its too early to know the direction the Broncos are headed and there are plenty of questions to be answered in the coming months. Will his fandom propel him to make decisions in the best interest of the organization or will it interfere with football operations ran by the football guys? Will John Elway still be here? Will Vance Joseph? What other personal changes, if any? Is the sellout streak in jeopardy? The perennial contenders face a steep road ahead, it will be interesting to see happens in a city that loves its Broncos. The 1970 Broncos home opener was a week 2 match-up vs the Steelers.
