With the recent Injury to Melvin Gordon the Chargers have agreed to a trade with the Detroit Lions to acquire HB A. Abdullah.
The Chargers Traded Travis Benjamin to Detroit in order to add depth to the backfield as Melvin Gordon is expected to miss at least 4 weeks.
The Chargers have depth at WR. And Benjamin was buried as the 4th WR.
Abdullah is expected to backup Brandon Oliver and may surpass him on the depth chart. Both are similar type backs but Abdullah is more of a threat to bring it to the house.
The Chargers came into Foxboro riding a 7 game losing streak.
During that span Phillip Rivers has been anything but himself throwing for an unbelievable amount of Ints.
Rivers has thrown 25 Interceptions combined with a completion percentage below 50%.
The cause for this historically bad performance is mind boggling.
Rivers still has the physical attributes that have made him a future hall of fame candidate.
He has remained healthy as well.
The Chargers have shown great patience in their veteran QB hoping that he would pull out of this slump.
That patience wore out quickly however after Rivers threw 3 ints in the 1st quarter of Sundays game.
The Chargers were down 10-0, Melvin Gordon had fumbled the ball on his second carry then got hurt on the next. The game was getting out of hand, In comes AJ Macarron and Branden Oliver, Things changed around quickly as the 2 combined to give The Chargers the spark that they have been so badly missing.
The Momentum carried over to the defense as they wreaked havoc on Tom Brady.
The patriots came into the game with the #1 rated passing Offense in the Nfl.
The Chargers forced 5 ints and sacked Brady 4 times with newly acquired Stephon Tuitt getting to Brady Twice.
Olb Perryman had the game of his life picking 3 passes and causing a fumble and recovery which gave the Chargers the ball with under 2 Minutes left and down by 4.
Macarron went to work and hit K.Allen with a beautiful game winning TD
Macarron Finished with 220 yds with 1 td and 1 int while hitting 13 out of 18 attempts.
Now the big question is will Mcarron start next week.
The easy answer is yes but some feel as if Rivers can still pull out of his slump.
Maybe it’s a mental thing that he can recover from.
It is now the bye week and maybe with a week off he can get his mental state back to where it should be.
As for now we know that if he does get another opportunity he will have a very short leash.
Chargers acquire Stephon Tuitt
A trade with the Pittsburg Steelers has been announced. The Chargers have agreed to send DT Corey Liuget and a 5th rd. pick for RE Stephon Tuitt.
Chargers GM Mark Manda when asked why the trade was made basically just smiled and said he was excited to have a young talented player added to an already strong defensive line.
We feel Tuitt adds nasty to the defense and is also a lil younger. The question is whether he will resign and for how much. The chargers are expected to get this done quickly however and have already started talking contract.
Another question is where he will play on the d-line, he has the athleticism and versatility to appeal as a five-technique or as a defensive tackle or base end in a 4-3.
The L.A. Chargers came into the season with high expectations.
They found out they had a great running back of the future in Melvin Gordon. Rivers gained a rapport with guys like Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman, and Tyrell Williams. We saw how good Hunter Henry could be as well. Keenan Allen is also dangerous if he can remain healthy.
The defensive side of the ball is also promising. While Bosa is the force up front, cornerback Casey Hayward is coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he led the NFL with seven interceptions. The Chargers need another great season from Hayward, because the other cornerback, Jason Verrett, can’t stay healthy. Verrett has shown he can be one of the NFL’s best cover corners, but he’s missed 24 of 48 games since being taken in the first round of the 2014 draft.
However, the Chargers debut season in LA has been disastrous.
Where do we start?
The play of the offensive line is a good place to begin. Melvin Gordon has had no room to operate as the Chargers rank 30th in rushing. Rivers has been sacked 16 times through 5 games and has thrown 12 ints due to having to get rid of the ball so quickly. The young talented wrs are not getting enough time to get open. The Chargers front office signed fa LT Russel Okung and drafted RG Forrest Lamp in the 2ND Round only to see both of them go down to injury.
Things have been so bad that the Chargers are rumored to have Phillip Rivers on the trading Block.
That would be seen by fans as throwing in the towel on 2017. AJ Macarron is currently the backup and rumors are that LA Would like to see what they have before the Nfl Draft.
The defensive side of the ball has been a disappointment as well.
Most of the defensive issues however can be attributed to being on the field way to long as the offense has put them in some difficult situations.
The injury bug has bitten the defense as well star LB Melvin Ingram and Dt Brandon Mebane both have missed significant time.
Although at 0-5 the Chargers still have some hope this season as they have been in close games with some of the better teams but just need a few more plays from their star players.
The offensive line will get better once Okung and Lamp return but it maybe too late at that point
