Coming into the 2022-2023 season the Bills had high hopes for the season coming off a disappointing loss in the AFCCG. But there were a few holes to get back to winning. Amongst those needs were OL, DL, and offensive playmakers. Of those additions Jadeveon Clowney and 2nd round pick Keenan Wofford were the big name changes. Clowney produced his first 10+ sack season in his career with one game left in his 1st season as a Bill, and Woffard has helped improve a porous OL from a season ago. Other notable additions have been WR Schwartz acquried in a deal with the Browns and suprise rookie RB Ruggs who was drafted in the 6th round. Both Schwartz and Ruggs have added in 700+ yards of total offense and 5+ TDs each. Becuase of their continued improvements throughout the season they both look poised to become key factors in getting the Bills back to winning!
Coming off a heart breaking loss in the AFCCG, Bills HC/GM Mac knew there was going to be some turnover within the roster. Lets start with the resign phase. There were some unheralded names that needed resigned that were geared to step into larger roles. Playoff hero HB Scarbrough was the main priority, TE Juwan Johnson who was brought over in a midseason trade, and WR Tylan Wallace who didn't see the field in 2021 all are going to play major roles in the upcoming season were all resigned.
During FA the Bills did not have much wiggle room in terms of cap space so we had to make every signing count. In FA the Bills were able to sign DE Jadaveon Clowney, HB James White, T Russell Okung, DT PJ Hall, LB Malik Jefferson, CB/S Patrick Peterson, S Richard Sherman. Of that group Clowney was the biggest name who was brought in to fix a lackluster pass rushing group. And Richard Sherman was the only other starter who signed with the team. He is making the move from CB to SS this season. James White figures to play a crucial role as a pass catching back and Peterson will rotate in on formations at the safety position.
The Bills only had 5 draft picks in this draft with every pick besides one coming in rounds 5-7. In the 2nd round we made it count drafting a C that the team thinks has Superstar potential in this league. HB Marquies Ruggs won the return specialist during training and DT Marquis Stewart was able to show enough to be the last roster spot. The other two players drafted will start the season on the practice squad and have to show their worth to make the 53 man roster.
Coming into last season there was a clear favorite as to who was going to win the AFC East. We had the most complete roster that was ready to compete. But that won't be the case this season. Every team made improvements this offseason and it will be a blood bath to decide the winner this season. Coach Mac is hoping a more balanced attack and an improved front 4 that the Bills can win the East once again.
Entering week 5 the Bills organization were in high hopes becuase the team has found ways to win ball games and start 4-0. But that changed in Kansas City... The team has won ball games behind the arm of Allen and bend but don't break defense. That was not the case this week. The Chiefs did whatever they wanted offensively with a 300+ passing day from Mahomes and a 100+ yards on the ground from CEH. But more impressively was the play the KC defense. They absolutely trounced the Bills offensive line, putting up 8 sacks and forcing 7 turnovers. Josh Allen will be having nightmares of this KC defense for weeks...
In other news expect Coach/GM Mac to be aggressive in the coming weeks before the trade deadline. They have already started shuffling the OL following their abysmal performace. Rookie RG Spencer Brown is getting bench with John Feliciano stepping in to play center. Every other starters job is safe for the time being, but everyone will be playing a new position in week 6 VS the Titans.
Disappointment swirls in the big apple once again. A defense that is surrendering points and yards at a ridiculous pace has been to blame for the 1-3 start to the season. Which makes the move to obtain disgruntled WR Hopkins from the Cardinals for stud SS Jabril Peppers. Coach Mac responds, "I guess we will just have to rely more on the offense to keep opposing offenses on the bench". Ranking in the bottom 1/4 in every major catagory except for run defense called for the firing of reigning defensive coordinator. The team was able to convice hall of fame coordinator Wade Phillips out of retirement to take over the struggling unit. A philosophy change might do the defense some good. Expect the team to run more of multiple defense going forward in hopes to give the front 7 a spark in the pass game. Coach Mac is in hopes that this will create more pressure and let their two ball hawk CB's go make plays.
The Giants season come to a disappointing end in a blowout loss to the Lions. Dropped passes, poor decision making, and a defense that couldn't stop a pee wee offense is what ultimetly doomed the team in week 17. The team never fully clicked on all cylinders. The team's longest win streak was just 3 games. Sam Howell, the teams first round selection, took a bit to get his feet underneath him. Posting 8 game splits of 2038 yards, 16 TDs, and 14 INTs in the first 8 games while upping his efficiency with 2179 yards, 20 TDs, to 10 INTs in the 2nd half of the season. Other notable Giants to post good seasons are Barkley with 1824 scrimmage yards with 11 TDs, Slayton with 1017 receiving yards with 8 TDs, Engram with 941 yards with 7 TDs, Surtain with 9 ints, and the two DTs combing for 13.5 sacks. Defense remains a huge question mark heading into next season. Corner back is a position the Giants will look into pretty heavily to improve especially with starter Fuller set to become a FA and spotty play from the safety positions in pass coverage. The other glaring hole on this defense will be a quality edge rusher. Free agent disappointment Bud Dupree is set to be released just 2 years after signing a huge 5 year deal and getting to the QB just 6 times in 32 games. The Giants are set to have an ample amount of cap space after unloading some contracts this upcoming offseason. Expect the Giants to be aggressive in targeting big name free agents to be competitive the following season.
In week 15 the Giants were on the outside looking in for a playoff berth. Currently sitting in 9th place behind the 8-6 Lions and 7-6-1 Panthers. The Giants took care of business leading for a little over 3 quarters of the game vs the Texans. The pass game was electric for boths sides of the ball with 63 combined points coming from passing TDs. Only difference were some amazing plays from the Giants secondary that included a one handed contested INT, a tipped pass leading to an INT, and a duck thrown into the air after Watson was pressured. During the Giants hot streaks it has come from an opportunistic secondary preying on QBs. Moving forward the Giants must win out with games against the Vikings and the Lions with some help along the way. The Giants will be praying for some help needing the Lion to lose in week 16 vs the Bears and the Panthers to lose out as well. Those are some tall tasks.
The Giants and Bears are in completely different spots in week 12 of the season, but both teams feel like its a must win game. The Giants come in on a 3 game winstreak and are suddenly in the race for one of the last wild card spots. A win over the dominant Bears will be just the confindence boost to keep things rolling in the 2nd half of the season. As for the Bears coming off a big win against the Rams they have extended their lead on the first round bye with a 2 game lead on the next team. A Bears team that feels like this may be one of the last chances to secure a super bowl bid with aging stars riddled throughout the roster. On paper this looks like it will be a blowout in the Bears favor. With the 2nd ranked offense scoring 35 points per game and the 10th ranked defense the Giants have to have a perfect game plan to be in this game. The Giants are a middling team with the 21st ranked offense and the 11th ranked defense. The Giants need to focus on stopping the high powered pass attack featuring quite the trio of recievers and see if they can slow down Mack. Those are two TALL tasks but with a solid game plan Coach Mac might be able to surprise the 9-1 Bears in Chicago.
Fresh off of their bye week the Giants look to get back on track for a strong finish. The Giants defense did just that! Forcing 4 turnovers, 3ints & 1 fumble recovery, against the Packers and putting constant pressure in the passing game. Instead of resting during the bye, the team practiced hard and it showed on the field. Some late game momentum allowed the Packers back into the game but ultimetly it was the front 7 who shined brightest in the win. Holding stud Aaron Jones to only 67 yards on the ground for the entire game and forcing Rodgers to make some questionable decisions. The Giants next opponent is the Washington Football Team. Looking to make up for their 2nd half implosion in the first matchup the defense is going to look to suffocate the balanced attack of Washington.
The trade deadline has come and past with most games out of the way for the week... To some users trades and the offseason are the most exciting thing about being involved in an online franchise. To much suprise the SFL trade deadline was a snooze fest. There was a little bit of a spark when rumors started to fly the KC Chief superstar Tyreke Hill was on the move. Ultimetly, the deal fell through though... A week prior to the deadline the Chiefs were a part of the seasons biggest blockbuster trade. Sending a key difference maker in Mathieu to the Bears. Although no deals went down there were a flurry of posts to get last second trades in. The 49ers were trying to ship out some key Vets to start a youth movement in the bay. The biggest name on the trade block was by far Deandre Hopkins of the Cardinals. It appears that some recent injuries and age scared off suitors to make a move at the deadline. With the rumor being that he will be a FA at the end of the season teams will stand pat with what they have at WR for the second half of the season.
2022 has been disappointing to say the least for Giants fans. Who were hoping that the losing ways were behind them when they brought in coach Kelly Mac and instilled his winning tradition within the organization. With the most recent win we might finally be seeing that come to fruition. The 2022 draft class posted some impressive stats in the win. Howell by far had his best day as a pro completing 29/33 attempts for 352 yards to go with 5 TDs with only 1 int. RB Isiah Spiller had 55 all purpose yards with 1 TD on the ground. And lastly, Wandale Robinson finally broke out with 7 catches for 87 yards highlighted by the game winning 27 yard seem route with only 12 seconds left in the game. Look for this trio of offensive rookies to be a big part in turning around the franchise.
Another week, another rough game. Coach Mac was undoubtedly frustrated following this game. Fielding a lot of questions about starting Howell too soon are starting to whirl in NY. When asked about it in the post game press conference Coach Mac responeded, "Absolutely not! Same is our guy and he will be going forward. We all saw his body of work at UNC and he was ready to take the reigns from day one of training camp. And on top of all that he has played 3 playoff teams to open up. We have a young roster and we will improve game by game."
Going forward expect the Giants offense to get back to its roots. A heavy dosage of Barkley and rookie running back Spiller. The OL has been opening holes for the backs its just time for the OC to keep pounding the ball. With that the offense can start getting some confidence and put the ball in the endzone. Next week the Giants travel to Florida to take on the Buccaneers.
Coming off of a successful season with the Ravens Coach Mac was hired to turn around the New York Giants. Not only was he hired as the new coach, he was also given general manager responsibilities handling player personel. Wasting no time with the offseasons main priority and franchise cornerstone Saquan Barkley was franchise tagged. Going into free agency the G-Men had all kinds of cap space. Making splash signings of OL Leno, CB Fuller, and LB Milano. With that going on openly in free agency a flurry of deals were being discussed behind the scenes. With the 5th pick there were some worries that the Giants weren't going to get one of the top QBs of the draft. After an initial conversation with the Packers gm no deal was struck. But after thinking it over a deal for the #2 pick, which turned into the top QB prospect Howell, a deal was struck.
There were high hopes coming into the season after a roster was turned upside down and consisted of 11 new starters. Through two games hope is now turning into desperation. Thus far, the Giants are a first half team and don't know how to finish a game. The team has blow two first half leads with little to no production in the second half of games. Coach Mac has decided to make lineup changes after a couple veterans have underwhelmed in two starts. Defensive Ends Bud Dupree and Lorenzo Carter have been benched for two unheralded rookies in hopes they can give a spark to this defense and become building blocks moving forward. If some longtime starters can't start producing on Sundays there might be some tough decisions coming in the offseason.
Going forward the offensive identity will not change. As Howell continues to develop into the franchise QB he is meant to be the team will continue riding franchise cornersone Saquan Barkley. Rookie HB Spiller and WR Robinson will also see larger roles in the offense as the team looks for any sort of consistent spark. Defensively a scheme change will take place for the week 3 game agianst the Philidalphia Eagles. Starting 0-2 has put a lot of players on the hot seat and only time will tell if the team can right the ship after a disasterous start.
After a terrible second half to the 2020-2021 the Baltimore Ravens finished the season last in the division at a woeful 6-10 record. Coach Kelly Mac in a postseason interview said, "I felt like the roster from top to bottom got out played week in and week out. We need to bolster our team with Vets in the offseason and sure up some glaring weak spots."
To start the offseason the GM quickly made moves for two quality players. Trading a 3rd round pick for FS Micah Hyde and a 2nd rounder for DT Matt Ioannidis. The already talented defense will get a much needed spark up front and deep with those two win now moves. Free agency was a bit underwhelming for the Ravens positions of need. The biggest additions were DE Brandon Graham and C Corey Linsley who are expected to sure up the Ravens two biggest weaknesses last season. In the draft our GM had a decision with the 8th pick. Not expecting Star Miami DE Rousseau to be there, the expecation was to improve the WR core with one the slew of quality prospects. But with a glaring need for pass rushers after a season, which 3 DL were cut due to poor play, it was an obvious selection at #8. The rest of the draft saw some raw prospects who will mostly factor in on special teams.
Coach Mac expects the team to get back to its roots this upcoming season of a balanced attack on offense and a stiffling defense. The goal is to get back on top of the division, which will prove to be a tough task with the reigning Super Bowl Browns making a lot of improvements from last season. Expectations are high coming into this season after making some much needed improvements to areas that were exposed all too often last season.
Year 2 of the M19 WFL cycle was a bit of a roller coaster ride for the Denver Broncos. The 1st half of the season was up and down for star rookie QB Aukeem Mason throwin only 3TDs to 13 INTs with a 4-4 record. Tanking crossed the mind of the upper management as this team had too many holes to cover for poor qb play... Coach Kelly Mac was furious when he found out that this was the direction that was wanted of him. With half of the season left to be played Coach Mac wanted a spark from this team to get some momentum for the next season. Little did he know that this team would finsih the season 7-1 and earn a playoff birth. Led by a fantastic 2nd half from QB Mason where he threw 13TDs to 2INTs. This almost lead him to the AFC OROY award but he just came up short... Other impact players were HB Freeman who fell 9 yards short of 1000 yards and had 11 TDs, WR Sutton had his 1st 1000 yard season as a pro along with 10 TDs, and two edge rushers in Miller (19 sacks) and Chubb (17 sacks) who had fantastic years.
With this team still missing some pieces to truly contend Coach Mac didn't want to get his hopes up for a deep playoff run but remained optimistic with the pieces he had. Game 1 did not start the best way for the Broncos. A couple turnovers and poor defense allowed the Texans to take a commanding 19-3 lead into the 4th quarter. QB Mason stepped up his game and lead the team on 2 scoring drives and converted both 2pt conversions to tie the game up late. The ensuing drive the defense stepped up and forced a turnover allowing great position to kick a game winning field goal.
The Divisional round was going to take a heck of a game plan to win that game. Traveling to LA to take on a Chargers team that I haven't beat since joining the WFL last cylce... If you tuned into this game wanting to see good QB play you were going to be disappointed. Both QBs combined threw 0 TDs and 7INTs. It was very much a defensive battle and some clutch runs by HB Freeman were the difference in the game.
Finally, the AFC CG...A matchup with the 1 seed Cleveland Browns was going to be a battle. And it was. The entire game was a teeter totter of momentum swings and lead changes. There were a lot of mistakes for both teams early. The Broncos defense was stout in the run game but had lapses in pass coverage allowing untimely chunk plays. A botched xp and giving great field position to the Browns on multiple occasions were ultimately the downfall of this team.
All in all it was a successful season for a Broncos team that about threw in the towel after the 1st half of the season. The Broncos will look to get stronger at all levels of the defense and add some big nasties on the OL to build on the success of this seasons team...
