AFC Defensive Rookie of the Month Vol. 2

DROM- DT Dion McCollum (CLE)

You mean the 0-8 Cleveland Browns aren’t a complete dumpster fire? Well, they might be, but one thing I can say is McCollum is a dog.

Throw on the tape or just look at the stats in the last 4 games. 17 tackles, 7 of them TFL, tells you how much of a menace he is in the run game. McCollum has potential to be a diamond in the rough when looking at this Browns roster.

Honorable Mention- OLB Jerry Tulloch (DEN)

He won the award last month and came close to doing it again. 2 sacks in 3 games played this month due to the bye week.

AFC Offensive Rookie of the Month Vol. 2

OROM- QB Ernie Ramsey (TEN)

Another repeat appearance here, but who can be surprised?

The Titans have the best record in the league and the 2nd ranked offense, mostly because this kid has been playing out of his mind. 70/95, 1016 yards & 9 TDs to 3 INTs in the last month.

I also want to note that the AFC South is one of the hardest divisions in the AMG. No rookie in the league has impressed me this much so far.

Honorable Mention- HB Glenn Oakman

The Pats seem to have a knack for drafting big time RBs later in draft. Last year it was Whitfield, this year it’s Oakman.

Oakman is the #2 guy in the backfield, but has earned more touches due to his versatility and explosiveness.

In the last month Oakman has 45 touches (17 catches) for 247 total yards & 5 TDs.

If this trend continues, Oakman will have more touches than Whitfield and potentially take over the starting job. Let’s monitor this as the season progresses.

NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month Vol. 2

DROM- CB Marco Freeman (ATL)

When you’re selected 1st overall in the draft, you’re expected to produce. Marco Freeman has done just that in the last 4 games.

Freeman has racked up 3 INTs & 25 tackles in the last month, showing he’s a do it all corner and a player fans can be excited about for years to come.

Honorable Mention- FS Larry Richardson

Could we be witnessing another Larry legend in AZ? 2 INTs and 17 tackles in the last 4 games tells me this kid has big play ability, he just needs to be consistent.

The team is 1-3 in their last 4, but shoutout to LR for making the list this month for his excellent play.

NFC Offensive Rookie of the Month Vol. 2

NFC:

OROM- QB Daniel Singh (TB)

I ended volume 1 with “get used to seeing Singh’s name on this list”. Well, here he is again.

Although it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, Singh has still performed significantly better than any other rookie in the conference.

1,062 yards & 10 total TDs in the last 4 games are nice numbers, but Singh has also turned the ball over 7 times in that span of time. This kid has all the talent in the world and speed bumps are expected with rookies, but if he wants to take his game to the next level he’ll have to be more careful with the football.

I have all the faith in the world that Singh can not only reach, but smash through his ceiling.

Honorable Mention- HB Floyd Walton (ATL)

Walton has been solid and dependable for this offense when his number is called. 6 TDs in the last 4 games would make any coach happy. I expect to see an uptick in volume as we head into the 2nd half of the season.

AFC Defensive Rookie Of The Month

OLB Jerry Tulloch (DEN)

It may scratch some heads because the team is 0-4, but if you throw on the tape, Tulloch makes plays every single week.

Tulloch has already racked up 8 TFL (1st in the AMG) & 3 sacks. What does that tell you? He lives in the opposing backfield. I love this kid and look forward to following his career.

2022-02-03

AFC Offensive Rookie Of The Month

QB Ernie Ramsey (TEN)

This was the easiest choice of them all. If anyone is a lock to make the All-Rookie Team at the end of the year, I think it’s this kid.

Ramsey has been a nightmare for opposing defenses, throwing for 1,180 yards w/ a 12:3 TD/INT ratio in the first 4 games. Despite being under constant pressure & ultimately sacked 10 times (3rd most in AMG), Ramsey has the 4th best passer rating at 135.4.

2022-02-03

NFC Defensive Rookie Of The Month

OLB Channing Melvin (ARI)

AZ is on a tear to start the season in large part to the stellar play of their defense. Melvin had a great preseason which had fans excited, but I don’t think anyone expected this level of production right out of the gate.

Melvin already has 4.5 sacks (3rd in the AMG) & has provided much needed athleticism off the edge.

2022-02-03

NFC Offensive Rookie Of The Month

QB Daniel Singh (TB)

The Bucs originally missed out on their top guy, but did they panic? No, instead they drafted someone who is arguably even better in Singh.

The former TCU Horned Frog has absolutely torched opposing defenses to start the season. Just take a look at this stat line:

56/79 (70% comp%), 948 yards, 13 total TDs, 2 INTs. And a big one for me, 138.5 passer rating which is 3rd best in the entire AMG!

Get used to seeing Singh’s name on this list.

Time For A Gut Check

At the midway point of the season, the Tennessee Titans have a lot to prove. Following an AFC championship appearance in season 24, the Titans had high expectations coming into the new year.

8 weeks into season 25, this team has been one of the bigger disappointments in the MBL. Sitting at 4-4 and in second place in the division, Tennessee will need to string together a big win streak to become relevant in the competitive AFC.

A perennial top 5 offense, is towards the bottom in almost every category and Marcus Mariota is having the worst season of his career. The 6 year $76.7M man, will really have to step up and improve on his 5 TD to 11 INT ratio for this team to have any chance to win.

On top of poor QB play, the Titans are struggling to get any kind of running game established. The RB position has been a carousel with neither back wanting to claim their right as the starter.

The one bright spot on this offense has been FA signing, Breshad Perriman, who leads the team with 34 catches, 529 yards & 2 TDs.

Considering the stats mentioned above, it is a miracle that this team is sitting at .500. The defense has battled through injuries but has been the driving force of this team. The captain of the defense, MLB Christian Kaeding, has been the MVP of this team through 8 weeks, with a league high 6 INTs.

SS Antoine Combs is also honorable mention for the team award and continues his push for DROY. The first round draft pick has 49 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 INTs, 9 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble, & 2 defensive touchdowns. He continues to impress the coaching staff and prove that he is a complete safety and one of the best playmakers in the league.

These next few weeks will be a gut check for the Tennessee Titans as they host the AFC Champion Chiefs, SB Champion Redskins, & travel to Dallas to play a 5-1-1 Cowboys team. If they are able to overcome adversity has yet to be seen, but soon we will learn what this Titans team is made of.

FA Day 1 Recap & Look Ahead

Day 1 of Free Agency is in the books and the Tennessee Titans have signed 3 players that will be inserted in the starting lineup immediately.

ROLB- Roy Ziemba

After losing the veteran OLB Justin Houston to FA, the Titans were in desperate need for a 3-4 pass rushing OLB. The 5 year player out of Northern Iowa, will be a great fit in the system and could make an immediate impact in season 25. The athleticism he brings to the field will help improve the pass rush of this already top tier defense.

K- Jason Myers

Last seasons kicker, Matt Brockermeyer, only missed two field goals but the organization felt his kick power was a problem. Myers has one of the strongest legs in the MBL and with 97 KPW, Tennessee is confident they can come away with points on most of their drives.

P- Jordan Berry

Field position is extremely important in the game of football and with 98 KAC, Berry can be a big weapon for this special teams unit.

According to sources, Tennessee remains very active in Day 2 and are close to signing WR Breshad Perriman and DT Demarcus Minnifield.

Rumors are also swirling that Tennessee has reached out to the owner of the Tampa Bay Bucs regarding a possible trade for the 2nd overall pick.

After speaking with Coach Mularkey, WR and OLB were the main needs this offseason and it looks like they will both be addressed early. Stay tuned for more news regarding the end of FA, the upcoming draft, and any potential trades.

The Red Hot Titans

As the playoffs approach in MBL season 24, we will begin to see who are the true contenders and who are the pretenders. A lot of teams have started off hot and then faded, or vice versa.

This definitely is not the case with the Tennessee Titans. In my first blog of the season, I broke down their offseason, analyzed their schedule and ultimately predicted an 11-12 win season.

12 weeks into the season, the Titans are one of the hottest teams in the MBL and look like they can easily surpass that prediction.

After the week 1 loss to the Bills, Coach Mularkey was on the hot seat. Who would've thought 11 weeks later he'd be in the conversation for coach of the year? There are a few other coaches in the league that have done a great job so far this season, but Mularkey to me has been the most impressive.

Here is my reasoning. The Titans missed the playoffs last season and because of that, didn't have very high expectations coming into this season. The Titans defense was ABYSIMAL last season, especially against the pass (29th). The season 24 Titans are in the top 5 in ALL defensive categories. To make that kind of improvement from one season to the next, deserves some credit. Not only that, the Titans are in first place in the hardest division in the entire league this season. The offense hasn't been as potent as it was in the past but it still sits at 11th in the league.

Marcus Mariota continues to protect the football, make the big plays when needed, and has even been mentioned as an MVP candidate. Like the entire team, Mariota seems to be peaking at the right time. Last week he lit up the division rival Texans for almost 300 yards, 4 TDs, and only one incompletion.

The rush attack has been a bit of a disappointment this season in a Tennessee, but Bowie finally broke out of his sophomore slump today in Seattle. The 2nd year running-back finished with 123 yards and 2 TDs.

If Bowie gets hot, this offense will be an absolute nightmare and there is no telling how dangerous this team can be. Although the conference is much stronger this season compared to previous ones, the Titans are confident that they can make a run at the title.

Season 24 quarterly

Four weeks into MBL season 24 and Tennessee Titan fans are buzzing. The Titans sit at 4-1, tied for first place in the division with the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. After a disappointing campaign in season 23, Owner Zach Moore stressed how important it is to win NOW.

Despite the pressure coming into the season, Coach Mularkey told his team that it's a new season, a new beginning, and that it was THEIR time. To start the season, the Titans traveled to Buffalo for what was supposed to be an easy win, and lost 24-13. After coming out flat on both sides of the ball, the rumors started to swirl about how secure the head coaching job was in Tennessee.

After the loss, Coach Mularkey hung up a picture in the locker room saying "Any given Sunday", challenging his team to NEVER overlook any opponent in the MBL. Man, did the team respond. The Titans went on to win their next 4 games playing lights out defense. What was an abysimal defense last season, is now a top 10 unit.

The offense has taken a step back from last year, but still sits in the middle of the pack and continues to make the big plays when it matters most. The Titans have alot of momentum right now and with a very favorable schedule, ownership expects a contender. Alot of things can happen between now and the end of the season, but the Titans will be a very dangerous team moving forward.

A Look Into Season 24

Preseason action has just begun in the MBL and all 32 teams are making the final cuts to their roster. The offseason was action packed and filled with several controversies. A big one in Tennessee came in round one of the MBL Rookie Draft.

Coach Mularkey expressed all season how important it was to boost the back end of the defense. The Titans finished 29th in pass defense last season, tha main reason why they missed the playoffs. Once the combine results were released, the name Tyrus Woodard, was buzzing throughout the organization. In an interview with MBL insider Sonny Weaver, owner Zach Moore even said the Titans would take Woodard if he was available. Desperate for a corner to play opposite Julius Way, the Titans ended up drafting CB Jimmy Barlow  out of THE Ohio State University.

Immediately after this pick however, the Titans felt the regret. Their division rival, Houston Texans, drafted Tyrus Woodard who supposedly "their guy." What they called "the human splash play" will now be terrorizing them twice a year and making what was an already great team, even better.

On top of that, the Titans were extremely quiet in the offseason, only signing CB Pearson Latimer, 4 year player out of Tennessee, and veteran Qb Jacoby Brissett to back up Mariota. On a more positive note, Latimer or Barlow will be an upgrade over Adkins who was completely torched at the CB2 spot last season.

The Titans then head into NY to face the Jets in week 1 of the preseason where we will get our first look at both Latimer and Barlow. Right off the bat, the Titans defense was a force and Barlow was a splash. On the very first series, Barlow blitzed from the nickel spot and sacked the QB forcing a fumble and ended up recovering it. A few series later, Barlow moved to the outside and intercepted a pass over the middle and returned it about 20 yards. It was then that the Titans' front office felt a spark and believed that they indeed did draft the right guy. On top of the sack, FF, FR, and INT, Barlow did not allow a single catch throughout the game. Yes, this is preaseason, but it's a pretty damn good start to a career in the MBL.

Latimer also played well when lined up on the outside, deflecting 3 passes and racking up a few tackles. One negative to his play was the two defensive holding penalties which will need to be cleaned up moving forward.

As mentioned earlier, the Titans' main offseason acquisitions have played well so far this preseason, but I will need to see this play translate into the regular season.

Offseason Grade: C

Looking ahead to the regular season, The Titans are confident they can make it back to the playoffs and contend for the MBL Title. Realistically, we hear that from many teams heading into the new season, but the Titans' schedule suggests that this could become a reality. Tennessee plays the weak AFC East, which can be won with a mere 9 wins, and a weak NFC West. "Every game poses it's own challenge, but we feel like if we take care of our divisional games, we have a very good chance of finishing with 11-12 wins this season"- Coach Mularkey. With that in mind MBL, keep an eye on the Tennessee Titans.

Season Review

And just like that, another season of MBL football is in the books. The Tennessee Titans, coming  off a SB appearance in season 22, failed to make the playoffs. Finishing 10-6 in the MBL is an accomplishment, but not what the Titans hoped for coming into this season.

The Titans inconsistent play, on both sides of the ball, is ultimately what cost them this season. Tennessee opened the season 3-0 only to lose 5 of their next 7 games. At this point, we were seeing inconsistency both on the field, and within the organization. The QB position was a carousel in season 23 and during that losing streak, we saw the Titans go from Mariota to Tyrod and back to Mariota. Once Mariota seemed to start to get in a groove, HB Derrick Henry goes down with an injury.

Enter rookie HB Gerard Bowie! In the 4 game stretch in which Bowie started, the rookie tallied 572 yards and 7 TDs. What was a poor rush attack up to this point in the season, seemed to have found a spark in Bowie. As Coach Mularkey watched the rookie shine, more controversy surrounded this Titan team.

Once Henry returned from injury, Coach Mularkey named Bowie the starter but promised to take a committee approach and run a 1-2 punch. With Mariota in a rhythm and this new found rush attack, the Titans offense was extremely tough to stop.

Despite all of the uncertainty, Tennessee finished the season with the number 2 overall offense in the league. Gerard Bowie finished the season with 113 carries, 716 yards, and 11 TDs and Derrick Henry finished with 130 carries, 444 yards, and 11 TDs. The dynamic rush attack finished 1st in the league with 22 total rushing touchdowns. Mariota also finished towards the top of the league in completion percentage and finished with 3,197 yards, 20 TDs and 19 INTs. "He's gotta clean up the turnovers but he really started to heat up towards the end of the season. Our entire offense did."- Coach Mularkey. We expect this offense to pick up where they left off next season and be a top tier offense in the MBL.

On the defensive side of the ball, the story is completely different. No controversy, no injuries, no issues that could've impacted this unit in a negative way. The Titans had the same starting 11 on the field for just about the entire season. Unfortunately, there is one common theme, and that is inconsistency. The defensive unit showed flashes but in the end could not get it together on the back end. The Titans finished with the 3rd ranked  rush defense, only allowing 762 yards on the ground all season, but the 29th ranked pass defense. The secondary was shredded all year long and is now the number one priority moving into the offseason.

The Titans own the 20th pick of the draft, and will be looking to boost that secondary at all costs. SS Dell will be testing FA, which on paper can be a big hit, but coach Mularkey feels as though he didn't play well enough to deserve his asking price. The Titans were in contact with a few teams in the top 5, but were not able to land a deal that would move them up in the draft. Coach Mularkey will continue to explore all options and address the secondary at all costs. Despite missing the playoffs, confidence is high in Tennessee and they feel as though they are a few moves away from another SB run.

Titans 1st QTR Eval

And just like that, we are 4 weeks into season 23 of the MBL. With that in mind, we have much to discuss in this weeks' edition of "The Tennessean". In today's edition, we will recap the first 4 weeks of the season, breakout player of the first quarter, most disappointing of the first quarter, and predictions for the next four weeks.

Through the first 4 weeks of action, the Titans are 3-1 (1-1 in the divison) and in 2nd place in the AFC South. Despite having a 3-1 record, the Titans have not played well and need to improve if they hope to make another an for an MBL title. The offense has been mediocre at best and sit in the middle of the road within the league. Marcus Mariota has completed 80% of his passes, but also has 4 TDs to 5 INTs. To compete in this league, turnovers must be limited so I expect Coach Mularkey to hammer that point home to his quarterback.

On the flip side, the defense has played very well and sits in the top 10 in the league. The main focus in the offseason was to beef up the front 7 and man have they done so. The Titans are the 3rd best rush defense in the league, giving up 101 yards in 3 games. Forcing a team to be one dimensional is crucial to victory, especially towards the end of the season and in the playoffs.

The Titans only loss on the season, courtesy of the Houston Texans, came in a nail biter 27-19. The Titans had the ball with less than two minutes left in the redzone and could not capitalize. The Texans now sit at the top of the conference at 4-0 and will need to make some adjustments moving forward if they hope to win the division.

Breakout player of the 1st QTR: CB Kaleb Adkins. Adkins is 2nd on the team with 19 tackles and 1st on the team with 2 INTs and 5 pass deflections. Kaleb played well all throughout the preseason, opposite Julius Way, and has continued to play at an extremely high level through the first four games.

Most disappointing player of the 1st QTR: HB Derrick Henry. Through four games, Henry has 50 carries for 151 yards and 2 TDs. That statline is just unacceptable for someone considered to be the face of the franchise. In last week's game vs the Texans, Gerard Bowie ran for 11-53-2 in three quarters of action. If Henry hopes to keep his starting job on the roster, he will need to greatly improve moving forward.

Looking ahead at the next four weeks, the Titans will face the 2-2 Jets, 1-3 Colts, and the 1-3 Bengals. Following their matchup with the Colts, the Titans will have a bye and an extra week to prep for the perennial wildcard team in Cincy.

Predictions:

Week 5- Titans 27 Jets 17

Week 6- Titans 20 Colts 10

Week 8- Titans 30 Bengals 24

Official first QTR grade: B

As always stay tuned for the next edition of The Tennessean and be sure to look out for our 2nd QTR season review.
