A Perfect Storm

The Packers came in to this week knowing they would have to put on their best performance of the season so far if they were going to beat the 2-0 Giants. The defense responded by turning in it's best performance of their second-year coach's tenure. That defense managed to shut out the Giants (aided by two missed field goals) en route to a 24-0 win and a 3-0 start for the second year in a row.

Any time Aaron Rodgers is behind the center the Packers always have a shot at winning. When he plays as well as he did on Sunday, they have a likelihood of winning. Rodgers was as impressive as it gets, going 19-20 for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns. Devante Adams and Kenny Golladay were the primary beneficiaries of Rodger's perfect day, with the former racking up 159 yards and a touchdown and the latter becoming the primary red zone threat with two touchdowns. The running attack failed to get much of anything going for another week, but Coach Dale wasn't particularly concerned because they didn't have to as long as they could manage to make the Giants respect the run. Damon Harrison Sr. did more than just respect the running game for the Giants, he absolutely crushed it, roaming in Green Bay's backfield whenever they tried to run the ball.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Packers played well enough to win even if Rodger's hadn't scored a single touchdown. Although they were aided by a pair of missed field goals by Giants kicker Nick Rose, the defense generally rose to the occasion of playing an early season undefeated opponent. Saquon Barkley showed flashes of brilliance but was ultimately limited to just 61 yards on 16 carries. Coach Dale believes that Barkley's carry count, and by nature his yardage, likely would have been higher if not for the early hole the Giants found themselves in. Kenny Clark was a terror in the Giants backfield racking up 6 tackles and 2 sacks. That brought Clark's sack total on the year to 4 through 3 games, and those 4 sacks match his season total from last year. Naturally the Packers are expecting a breakout year from the young defensive tackle. The secondary was up to snuff as well, forcing 3 interceptions, two of which came in the red zone. 2nd year safety Kenbrell Simmons managed to grab two interceptions himself in the defensive backfield.

All things considered the week really could not have gone much better for the Packers who are happy to take a 3-0 record in to their early-season bye week.

Pack Attack Back on Track

For all the talk of a need to improve in a tumultuous off-season for the Packers, the new season started off with the Packers doing the same thing that drove their playoff push last season: winning games in the division. After a miserable NFC Championship Game and a slot of an off-season to forget about it Aaron Rodgers was once again dominant to start the 2019 season. Although he did throw an interception as a result of a miscommunication with new Packer Kenny Golladay, and though he only had one passing touchdown on the day, Rodgers was his typical efficient self. He was 16/18 for 252 yards and added another 16 yards to go with a rushing touchdown on the ground. Rodgers' lone touchdown on the day came on a long 51 yard bomb to Devante Adams with time expiring in the first half, a familiar sight to Packers fans. Ajayi split time with rookie Francis Higgins in the backfield, both of whom scooped up rushing touchdowns. Defensively the Packers suffocated Vikings quarterback A.J. Gowan. The rookie struggled in his professional debut, mustering only 120 passing yards and 1 touchdown while throwing 5 interceptions. The Packers failed to register a sack on the quartberback, but he was nonetheless under pressure several times which contributed to his high turnover rate. The Packers will look to continue a trend of high-level play next week as they host the Redskins at Lambeau.
