Cowboys Listening to Trades for LVE

The Cowboys have annoucned in a surprising move by head coach Kirk Ferentz and Cowboys ownership, that they will be listening to trade offers for star LOLB Leighton Vander Esch.  The move comes as a surprising one as LVE has one more year to play on his intitial rookie contract and is elligible for a 5th year option due to him being a first-round draft pick.  It's possible that Cowboys ownership is just seeing the market for their star linebacker before ultimately deciding it is best to keep him.  The Cowboys do have one of the best linebacker core units in the league with Vander Esch and Anthony Barr on the outside and Jaylor Smith locking down the middle of the field.  Barr is locked in a contract for 3 more years and Smith is locked in for 5 more.  With LVE locked in one more year plus a 5th year option the Cowboys will likely keep these trio of linebackers together unless a huge offer comes their way.

Due to injury in the 2020 season Vander Esch was out for 5 1/2 games but still managed to put up respectable stats and no one questions his abilitity to change an entire defense for the better.  It is the belief of the Cowboys if they were to move on from LVE they should recieve good trade value that would likely include a top pick and player or the following needing positons: linebacker replacement, free safety, quarterback or wide reciever.

Grading QB Tyrod Taylor

Jumping right into my second blog and second player evaluation, the focus will now be on QB Tyrod Taylor. I want to focus on two key Cowboy players: TE Walter Wilder and QB Tyrod Taylor.  Taylor is an interesting candidate for a player evaluation due to the nature of his role on the Dallas Cowboys.  Taylor, age 31, has started in the NFL in multiple games for the Ravens, Bills, Browns, and Rams.  However, for the Cowboys he is actually the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drew Rosenberg.  So why look at a third string, age 31, washed up quarterback?  Head Coach Kirk Ferentz got Taylor from the Chargers in week 8 with the gameplan to use him as a swiss army knife prototype aka Taysom Hill.  So far, Tyrod has made a decent impact both statistically overall and in several games.  As of week 14 Tyrod has completed 9 passes for 100 yards with 1 INT and 1 TD, run 21 times for 96 yards and a TD, and has caught 6 passes for 59 yards and a TD.  Coach Ferentz has been open with the belief Tyrod should be MORE involved, not less and has several new formations for him to be in the game starting week 15 as the Cowboys try to make it to the playoffs.

Play 1) This first clip comes from Tyrod's first game as a Cowboy.  The team was experimenting with ways to properly utilize him and has success against the Ravens in a 24-17win.  Did Tyrod have a factor in that win?  The easiest answer would be yes, as he accounted for 2 passes for 29 yards, and 3 rushes for 33 yards and a TD.  This first play to look at is Tyrod rushing for a TD. The TD was significant not only for Tyrod, but helped the team jump to a 7-0 lead on the difficult Baltimore Ravens.  It should be mentioned that Tyrod appeared to be less focus of the opposing defense when RB Zeke Elliot was playing.  Since Zeke has been hurt, teams have been able to focus more on Tyrod in running situtations.
https://clips.twitch.tv/HonestBloodyFoxM4xHeh

Play 2) This second clip is a negative play by Tyrod for multiple reasons.  It came at a bad time because it was on third and inches in a 0-0 game that ultimately the Cowboys lost 19-27.  The Cowboys would end up losing to two different Eagles head coaches this season and will likely more signficantly lead to them losing the NFC East and missing the playoffs.  Tyrod has a wide open RB Pollard in the flats for an easy completion, throws off his back foot and misses the easy reception by a long shot with a dud of a pass.
https://clips.twitch.tv/FrailAthleticPepperoniPanicVis

Play 3) This third clip is a positive play by Tyrod resulting in an early 7-0 lead on the Cleveland Browns in a game that ended with 24-17 Win.  Tyrod does a great job on this play standing in the pocket with pressure coming right at his face.  As he gets hit, he finds the open man in TE Wilder who makes a defender miss for a touchdown.  Taylor proves on this play that while he may not be a QB1 passer anymore, he can still deliever a touchdown pass.
https://clips.twitch.tv/SpineyVibrantReindeerCorgiDerp

Play 4) This third clip comes in a similar play that was successful clip 1, but it results in being tackled instantly behind the back field by the Giants.  The Cowboys and Tyrod are lucky that he was tackled by his face mask that results in a free yards and an excellent position to score a touchdown on the next play.  Regardless, the defense was not properly diagnosed and the offensive line did not hold up against the Giants on this play which results in Tyrod being hit that could have led to a fumble.

Grading TE Walter Wilder

Hopefully fellow members enjoyed the 2019 edition's of Cowboys Player Evaluations featuring QB Jacoby Brissett, RB Zeke Elliot, and CB Byron Jones.  In the future seasons I hope to feature players from others teams.  For my initial 2 blogs I want to focus on two key Cowboy players: TE Walter Wilder and QB Tyrod Taylor.  This first edition will feature on the key Cowboys drafted rookie from the 2020 (first year) draft.  The Cowboys did not have their best draft overall, but TE Wilder was seen as an excellent pick at the time and has proven worthwhile.  Wilder was drafted 25th overall, late in the first round out of Auburn.  He has enjoyed a successful collegiate carrer and at 6'3", 260 Pounds he has all the measurables to have success in the NFL.  Wilder currently leaders the Cowboys with 49 receptions for 758 yards with 6 Touchdowns.  In a comparsion of tight ends across the league, he currently ranks 6th in yards, 5th in receptions, and 6th in touchdowns. One statistic that is hard to track but can be found is that all of the 5-6 tight ends ahead of him in all of these categories have more drops.  Wilder currently has 6 drops for the entire season, but his fellow tight ends are sitting at 9 (Burton), 8 (Ebron), 7 (Smith), 20 (Fant) WOW!, and 23 (McClain)-- the stud TE from Jacksonville.. WHAT?  It appears Wilder's reputation of being sure-handed is well earned!

Play 1) This first clip comes from a difficult game (and a terrible loss) against the Seahawks.  The game is significant because Wilder is a rookie and this is his first NFL regular season game ever!  Wilder did have 3 recepitons for 46 yards which is decent for a rookie, but that is his 4th worst yardage total in a gam this season.  He also scored 0 touchdowns against the Seahawks in a 7-38 defeat the team desperate needed them.  This was Wilder's first reception and it didn't come until down 17 points at the end of the first half, this in itself was poor management by the head coach.  With more experience under his belt, Wilder likely would have taken this for a TD.
https://clips.twitch.tv/BoldRichEggTakeNRG

Play 2) The second clip came from Wilder's and the Cowboys second game, their first against the Redskins in the 2020 Season.  The cowboys dismanlted the Redskins 33-7.  This was one of the Cowboys greatest games in the 2020 campaign so far and it comes as no surprise it was also one of TE Wilder's greatest games in his first season in the NFL.  He finished the game 5 receptions for 103 yards and 1 Touchdown.  The touchdown came on a 3rd and 10 with the Cowboys already up 19-0 but wanting to put a nail in the coffin.  The 4 Verts play was executed beautifully and TE Wilder and he burned Redskins Collins for an easy first touchdown of his young career.
https://clips.twitch.tv/BlatantBlindingTireYouDontSay

Play 3) This third clip, although coming in a victory against the Rams and a 9 reception 100 yard performance, also drew negative response from head coach Kirk Fertentz when after the game mentioning that QB Brissett needed to spread the ball around and not just go to his tight end.  TE Wilder responded on social media (Twitter) than he was the star of the team and Brissett should only be throwing to him.  Ferentz responded by not playing Wilder in the next game, which is why he has no stats for game 4 of the Cowboys 2020 campaign.  In this play the user lurk occurs on the opposite side of Wilder, but Wilder does not run his route cleanly causing him to get held up a bit.  Because Brissett is attempting to force it too often to Wilder he blindly throws opposite way right into the Rams user.
https://clips.twitch.tv/AltruisticOriginalMarrowEagleEye

Play 4) The fourth and final clip is from a recent game against the New York Giants.  This play really represents the progress wilder has had throughout the season.  Wilder had a great game against the Giants totallying 5 receptions for 94 yards and 1 touchdown.  In this play, which resulted in a touchdown, Wilder showed off his catch radius, ability to hold onto the ball through contact, avoiding tackles, and push throughto get the touchdown-- something he wasn't able to do as well at the beginning of the season.  Most impressive, he makes this play agianst young star stud Giants SS Jabrill Peppers.

Grading RB Zeke Elliott

Hopefully fellow members enjoyed the first edition of Cowboys Player Evaluations featuring QB Jacoby Brissett.  In the future seasons I hope to feature players from others teams.  For season 1 I want to focus on Cowboys.  The first edition featured a brand new member to the team in the leagues most valuable postion, the quarterback.  This second edition will focus on the Cowboys most valuable player, RB Zeke Elliott.  The last edition for season one of Player Evaluations will focus on the opposite side of the ball, a player from the defense.  Not only is Zeke the most valuable player on the Cowboys (and compensated as such), he's leading the vote for Most Valuable Player in the entire league this season.  He is a player you must PLAN for, and EXECUTE against.  As seen in the Cowboys two losses this season, Zeke can still get yards and make plays and the Cowboys are beatable.  But, if you do not have a plan and Zeke is allowed to take over the game, you've made it that more difficult to win.

Play 1) This first clip comes from a difficult game (and a loss) against the Vikings.  The Vikings owner played Zeke very well and due to that in-part, beat the Cowboys 34-27.  Zeke ended the game with 100 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown but his 5.6 avg yards per rush is much lower than his 7.2 season average.  These indvidual game stats do not also show how difficult the Vikings made it on Zeke to run up the middle between the tackles, or on the outside edge both.  In this clip Zeke got the longest rush against the Vikings by reaching the edge, stiff arming the usered safety Simmons, and tiptoeing up the sideline for 20 yards.  This impressive run was the best Zeke would do against an opponent that clearly played him well.
https://clips.twitch.tv/SincerePowerfulQueleaDancingBaby

Play 2) One unknown strength Zeke has had this season is running out of his own endzone.  When the pressure is on and it's up to him and him alone to get his team out of a negative situation, Zeke has put the team on his back and not only been successful but has ran for some of his best rushing all season in these situations.  In the following clip against the New York Giants, Zeke recieves the handoff from his quarterback in his own endzone before taking the counter run 60 yards.  The Giants likely did not suspect that would be the case when they put the Cowboys in this dire situation.
https://clips.twitch.tv/SarcasticSlickRadishHeyGuys

Play 3) Zeke has held onto the ball pretty well this season, only coughing it up two times all year in fumbles.  Both of these fumbles have not led to the Cowboys losing the game, however both are significant negative plays and end it up on this list.   Likely increasing the chances the Cowboys should lose this game by 10-fold after this fumble late in the third, the Cowboys snuck out a win not on Zeke's abilities but their ability to pass the ball and gamble at the end of the game going for two points instead of settling for a tie.   Zeke was held for 3.9 yards per carry in this game, his worse outting all season.  No rushing touchdowns, a fumble, only 3.9 yards per carry, and not breaking the 100 yard rushing mark signifies this is the low-point of Zeke's rushing this first season and may be a study for opponents to see how they slowed him down.
https://clips.twitch.tv/PoisedAmorphousCard4Head

Play 4) Zeke has surprisingly not be used much in the passing game.  A majority of his catches have been from screens, he is very rarely targeted in the actual route tree. Part of that is by design to limit his touches, keep him fresh, remain within league rules, and most importantly attempt to avoid critical injury.  Often times it appears teams are defending Zeke running routes a lot more than would seem neccessary considering how very few times he's targeted.  This is probably due to the fact opponents know he is a weapon in space and do not want to give up an easy throw that than goes for 20+ yards.  Luckily for the Cowboys, this leads lesser known targets often much more open.  Not in this play against the Redskins, however.  I've included this play because it is a rare situation that Zeke runs a route and I've decided to throw to him because he was just that wide open.  I was shocked myself and grateful for the easy touchdown.
https://clips.twitch.tv/HonestCrackyManateeNinjaGrumpy

Play 5) Knock on wood, i've included both of Zeke's fumbles because they truly are his worse plays all season and need to be seen to get a true evaluation established.  On this play, Zeke has just caught a screen pass and clearly is looking down frield before securing the ball.  Nothing frustrates a coach more than this situation and Zeke got an earful when he returned to the bench.  This play stopped the Cowboys from a chance to go up possibly another touchdown before the half and significantly put the game out of reach for the Redskins.  Lucky for Zeke, the game was won regardless.  Still, obviously the coaches talk got through to him as he has not fumbeled often this season.
https://clips.twitch.tv/ShortCrazyPicklesCorgiDerp

Play 6) This final play was completed against a strong Eagles team.  The Eagles won this game in a defensive fist fight that they ended up victorious of 12-10.  While the defense can hold their head up high for holding a powerhouse offense to 4 field goals, Zeke clearly was not enough to beat the Eagles.  Zeke had a great game against the Eagels rushing for 181 yards on only 15 carries including this beautiful 83 yard rushing touchdown.  I've included this play for both the good and the bad.  The good, that Zeke ran his longest run all season against a strong Eagles team clearly intent on shutting him down and not bale to.  And the bad, that despite his efforts he and the Cowboys still lost the game to their NFC East divisional rival.
https://clips.twitch.tv/SplendidWrongCaribouPhilosoraptor

These six plays by far were not the only ones that could be examined to determine how well RB Zeke Elliot has performed this season.  And it should be noted Zeke has also struggled, as seen by several of these plays examined. While Zeke is clearly the best player on the Cowboys, that comes with the pressure of knowing with a player of his calliber that should mean winning games.  And unfonrtuately, the Cowboys have lost two games in which Zeke just did not do enough to win them.

What this evaluation does show is that RB Zeke Elliot is good enough to not only be the Most Valuable Player of the Dallas Cowboys, but he should also be the Most Valuable Player of the entire league this first season.  What is an MVP if he does not scare the opponent?  When you plan to play the Cowboys who are you stategizing to shut down?  And even if Zeke does have success on the ground, is it not still a "success" against the player himself when you win against the Dallas Cowboys?  The Cowboys need to continue to find ways to "feed Zeke" while also getting him more involved in the passing game to take pressure of QB Brissett.  That concludes the second edition of player evaluations.  Let me know which defender for the Cowboys should be evaluated and if you'd like to see players from other teams evaluated next season!

Grading QB Jacoby Brissett

Due to the highly followed and controversial move to trade QB Dak Prescott for Colts QB Jacoby Brissett, we are doing our first player evalaution on Brissett.  Keep in mind this is small sample size, and when covering a player we will highlight both the highs and lows and point out what things can be improved upon.  This article will acknowledge here but not beyond this point that part of the trade reasonig for Brissett was due to the lack of a need high tier quality QB that would cost more when the Cowboys offensive attack is mostly rush based. However, due to the Cowboys first lost and Brissetts horrible game on paper it makes sense to begin this series with him. (please click on the links to recieve the clips)

Play 1) Brissett started the game will a play that was well designed.  Coach Ferentz knew that the Eagles would be expecting a heavy rushing attack, which is why they deployed early this RPO Slant.  The RPO Slant was completed with success for an 11-yard completion to WR Gallup and an early first down.  Brissett did a great job faking the running back and throwing the ball in-stride for Gallup.
https://clips.twitch.tv/ShortStylishGrasshopperBCWarrior

Play 2)Brissett made a terrible read here.  Coach Ferentz thought that sending the recievers out on deep routes he would be able to get RB Zeke open out of the backfield.  However, Brissett locked onto Zeke and never looked of his top read.  The play was well-covered and Brissett is lucky not to throw a pick-6 off this poor decision.  Instead, the drops leads to Maher's 55 yard field goal.
https://clips.twitch.tv/HungryResilientLyrebirdRickroll

Play 3) The offensive line played terible this series, letting the Eagles sack QB Brissett twice.  Facing an impossible 3rd and 32 yards to gain for the first, head coach Kirk Ferentz showed complete resilence and conference in his newly acquired quarterback by placing him in an empty backfield and throwing out of the Dallas endzone.  This was incredibly dangerous and risky, but seen as a way to build confience in their QB.  The move proved correct, as Brissett delievered a strike to WR Kevin White for 23 yards.  While not enough to gain the first down, the throw was imppressive and right where only White could get it.
https://clips.twitch.tv/EagerDeliciousPeachHassaanChop

Playe 4) This was a terrible read and poor decision by Brissett.  Clearly looking back WR Gallup was open with several steps ahead of the nearest defender this play has a chance to go for a TD with the correct throw over the top to Gallup streaking down the left side of the field.  Instead, Brissett decides to make a poor decision that should have led to an interception attempting to throw to WR Randall Cobb in tripple coverage.  This throw, and the decision were terrible.
https://clips.twitch.tv/WiseObservantPassionfruitKlappa

Play 5) Another poor, poor decision by QB Brissett.  Coach Ferentz knows he must talk to his QB about tucking the ball and running or possibly just throwing the ball away in these situations.  The Eagles defense set itself in great poisition by pressing and playing inside which puts CB Darby in perfect position to pick this ball off.  Having his top read to WR Gallup, Brisset should have recognized this from the snap and looks to throw instead the out route to TE Tye.  A top caliber talent like Darby just frankly not going to mess up being given play like this by a QB.
https://clips.twitch.tv/DeterminedHardRavenDancingBaby

Play 6) Very impressive play by QB Brissett here proving he does have the skill needed to be a starting caliber QB.  After faking the handoff, Brissett rolls out to the left and throws a dagger right to the outstretched hands out TE Tye while on the run in a spot only his tight end can get it.  Impressive catch by Tye, but the ball is in perfect placement allowing the TE to make the play.
https://clips.twitch.tv/OddUnsightlyOcelotKappaPride

These six plays by far were not the only ones that could be examined to determine how newly acquired QB Jacoby Brissett performed against the Eagles.  And it should be noted nothing can be more obvious then his lack luster stats, a dismisal 7 for 14, 84 yards, and 2 interceptions. While it should be mentioned the Eagles had constant pressure on Brissett which resulted in 4 sacks and many pressures, Brissett also did not always make good decisions and smart reads.

What this evaluation does show is that QB Jacoby Brissett is good enough to be successful in this league, especially behind the impressive offensive line of the Dallas Cowboys with an elite running back in Zeke.  The Eagles defense, while talented, is not a top 10 unit in the Destiny Madden League.  Brissett must be better at not making mistakes, something that former QB Dak Prescott excelled at.  Before being traded to the Colts, Prescott had only 2 interceptions in the first 6 games played.  The Cowboys are headed into a bye week and QB Brissett must take time to learn the playbook, his recievers, and work to limit the mistakes when the Cowboys return to action week 9.

Evaluating the Buccaneers Trades

The purpose of this article will be to evalaute the trades the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to this season on if the player contributed and made an impact in helping the team get to the playoffs with a record of 11-5. Although the terms of the trade are important, for this article the only thing that will be looked at is performance.

Quarterback - QB Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys)
Season Stats: 225 for 378 / 60% Accuracy / 3,417 Passing Yards / 22 Touchdowns / 24 Interceptions
QB Dak Prescotts first season as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer ended as a mixed bag.  Prescott was off to a hell of a start to begin his careers as a Buccaneer.  Through his first 6 games Pescott threw 16 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions.  During this stretch he was seen as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC, if not the entire league.  His play against the Colts (362 Yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT) was so impressive that the ownership of the Buccaneers decided to hand him a new 5 year contract.  However, his next 3 games Prescott had only 3 TDs to 12 INTs.  He never had that bad of a stretch again to finish the season but those 3 weeks hurt the Buccaneers in their running to the top NFC seed in the playoffs, and ruined his impressive run.  We Prescott a good trade? Yes.  He provided better accuracy that Winston could have not.  When Prescott was hot, he was red hot.  However, when Prescott was bad he was one of the worst QBs in the league.  Next season the Buccaneers will need Prescott to become more consistent and limit his interceptions.
Trade Evaluation: Mixed Bag

Runningback - RB Wayne Gallman Jr. (New York Giants)
Season Stats: 33 Attempts for 107 Rushing Yards / 3.2 Avg / 24 Recieving Yards/ 0 TDs
To put it blantly, RB Wayne Gallman Jr. was an absolute failure of a trade.  While the trade did include a good O-lineman, Gallman by himself was injured 2x during the season and when he was on the field hardly made an impact.  His best game came against the Atlanta Falcons (Week 16) where he rushed 5 times for 59 yards.  Put simply--This trade was bad.
* As part of this trade Buccaneers sent RG Bradbury a Star XP rookie for LG Mewhort.  While both have played similar (Bradburry allowed 5 sacks in season, Mewhort allowed 6) clearly the Giants have the better guard longterm making this trade worse.
Trade Evaluation: Dumpster Fire Bad

Cornerback - CB Chidobe Awuzie (Dallas Cowboys)
Season Stats: 34 Tackles, 8 INTs, 1 TD
Clear as day, getting this player in the Buccaneers uniform was one the most brilliant and best things about the 2019 Season.  CB Awuzie played like a top-tier cornerback all season, continuing his success he had on the Cowboys where he had 7 interceptions in the previous 2018 Season.  Not only did Awuzie have career-highs in tackles (34) and interceptions (8), he ended up leading the league in interceptions--the next best was a tie at 7.   With a year under rookie star cornerback Deandre Baker's belt, this will clearly be one of the best---if not the very best --- tandem of cornerbacks in the entire Destiny League for the 2020 Season (95 OVR and 91 OVR respectively).
* As part of this trade Buccaneers sent. TE O.J. Howard a Star XP weapon to the Dallas Cowboys.  While Howard had a hell of an impressive campaign in 2019, TE Cameron Brate finished with 615 Yards and 6 Touchdowns.  Is Howard a better player then Brate? Definitely.. would it had been worth keeping Howard and not getting Awuzie? HELL NO.
Trade Evaluation: Key to Season Success
