How many 180 turns can be had in a franchise’s history? The Chiefs started as one of the original NFL teams. Lots of success and even participating in some of the early championship games. Then a long streak of disappointment. Bright spots here and there came and went. Derrick Thomas, Christian Okoye, Joe Montana and Marcus Allen in the twilight of their careers.
Then GM Coolbreeze was hired. Paired with Andy Reid and his offensive genius, magic happened. Reid said to get him players that could make plays and he would put points on the board. He trusted that GM Coolbreeze would put talent on the other side of the ball. And that’s exactly what happened. Those moves and that chemistry led to two superbowls. Those things seem like a distance memory now though.
Last season was one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory for KC. Talent remained on offense. Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce did what you would expect of them. Well, when Mahomes had time. The glaring weakness was that the offensive line couldn’t block a peewee defensive line the way they played. The defense was the big issue. But I’ve only got so many words for this column, or else the newspaper editor told me he won’t print it. But who the hell reads newspapers anymore anyway? I might just leak the full version of this online. If I don’t, tune in next time for the rest of the recap of a season that went up in smoke.
I'm fuckin fed up. And yet, every weekend I put on my Marcus Allen jersey that has the faded numbers and I head to Arrowhead or the closest bar and I root for these bum ass Chiefs. What's wrong with me? Why am I so invested? Well, there are a lot of answers to that question.
First let’s talk about the fact that my wife left me and why. She left because we got in an “heated” argument when she was a little TOO happy Joe Montana came to us back in the 90s. Joe Cool was her man crush and we had agreed that we each got one pass for our crush but I’m thinking, he’s in Cali no way she ever comes into contact with him right? WRONG! No sooner than Joe comes to town, a buddy of mine made sure he mentioned at our next cookout that he saw Joe at the bar near the stadium. The same bar me and my wife met. Needless to say, she wanted to visit that bar a little more often. Last I heard from her she actually did meet Joe, and got a lifetime supply of Sketchers out of their time together smh.
If that weren't enough.....remember the Chiefs fan that reportedly buried a KC flag under the new Raiders stadium site? That was me. I got fired from that job as a result. Apparently that's not professional. In my humble opinion they should've let us know what we were working on before we signed on for the job. Oh and by the way my son is a Raiders fan. He didn't take too kindly to all the ridicule he got once people found out the person that did it was his dad. We won't even talk about the lawsuit that Mark Davis and Jon Gruden are coming after me with. Anyway, I still have hope...go Chiefs.
The Chiefs are the ultimate “what the fuck” team. They have arguably the league’s best quarterback and reigning MVP in Mahomes. They have the leagues most explosive and dynamic playmaker in Tyreek Hill. The league’s best TE in Travis Kelce. They have speed for days in Hardman and Watkins. And yet....they sit with a losing record. If you look at this team on paper it would be hard to fathom that the halfway point of the season they would be one of the worst team in the AFC. As a fan I’m trying to remain civilized and calm, but those are hard to come by traits these days.
The offensive line continues to be a source of EXTREME pain for both KC fans and also for QB Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes has been sacked 44 times thus far in the season. That’s an average of about 6 sacks allowed per game, and in the losses obviously that number is significantly higher. Of QBs sacked at least 41 times, Mahomes has the highest QB rating, which lends to his talent and ability to perform in the face of chaos. The problem is that chaos is ever present for the Chiefs. Since their defense is only present in spirit, they have found themselves down at least 14 points in the first quarter of 7 of their games.
This even led to a suspension of Mahomes (this is where the average of 6 sacks per game comes from). There are many reports out around the cause of the suspension but the common thread is that Mahomes had been looking for a form of pain management to avoid pain killers and opioids. He had explored marijuana and a few other options and ultimately those led to a party life, because you know, 23 year old MVP. Veteran RT Mitchell Schwartz has said that he isn’t sure how Mahomes is still standing and has applauded the toughness of the QB. But it is worth considering, how long before he’s injured with this kind of punishment? With the standard for injuries being pretty low, the comparison was made in another fan report to Favre, but is that what you want? And oft injured start QB who is hurting his team because he’s running for his life? I don’t want that at all......
So at the quarter mark of the season the Chiefs stood at 1-3. The losses were both close (Raiders and Jags) and comical blowouts (Ravens). There was at least a win sprinkled in there, beating a Lions team that at the time was among the best in the league. Lions coach/GM Wayne was under the weather it was later reported after the game and severely impacted his ability to game plan and call plays. So...big fat asterisk next to that win for KC.
So what are the things worth mentioning at this mark? Well let’s split this up into 2 things. The offense and the defense. We could do the good and the bad, but one column would be significantly shorter than the other, I’ll let you guess which is which.
First let’s start with the offense. Mahomes has shows signs of his MVP form but my and large he’s been forcing throws and trusting his arm too much. Showing a lot of Brett Favre tendencies. As a fan that’s not something I would like to see in my QB. Let’s keep in mind Farve is the all time INT leader. A huge part of that is the offensive line. Let’s be honest here they couldn’t block their way out of a wet paper bag. The C and RG positions are MAJOR liabilities and LT and RG aren’t far behind. Any team with a halfway decent front gets pressure and Mahomes is among the most sacked QBs in the league.
Now switching over to defense, what can we say here? They can’t stop the run. So let’s go to pass defense, oh wait they can’t stop that either. The $100M man Frank Clark is proving to be a major bust at this point in the season and the once promising secondary of Fuller, Mathieu, and rookie Juan Thornill looks outmatched in a big way thus far. There were rumblings of a potential DC change but GM Curtis is giving Steve Spagnuolo some time to get it figured out. This is after all a new scheme. Many forget the team is switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and many injuries along the dline haven’t allowed the projected started to get the reps they need. We will see what the future holds for this squad but through quarter 1, it doesn’t look promising.
As you've probably already heard by now, Patrick Mahomes was suspended for the Texans game. There has been a lot of speculation as to why. No matter what you believe happened, two things are certain. One, the Madden Curse is real. Two, Patrick Mahomes might not be as clean as we all think.
The Madden Curse is pretty much undefeated. Is that what’s happening to Mahomes and the Chiefs? To say that he’s been disappointing 3 games into the season would be an understatement. He’s been downright atrocious. I mean, absolutely crack of a plumbers ass at the end of a 12 hour shift disgusting.
You want to know how disgusting? Mahomes is averaging 4 INTs per game in the first 3 games. You ever wish Rex Grossman was your QB? As a Chiefs fan I’m wondering if Rex didn’t trade powers with Mahomes on some Space Jam shit. What the fuck is wrong with him?
He’s over throwing guys left and right, we can’t get Sammy Watkins involved and we can’t fuckin run the ball. Our whole offense is some shit and I’m tired of this. I know I sound like a spoiled ass fan because you know...2 Super Bowls in the last 5 seasons but to hell with that I want to win now! I’m gonna petition to bench Mahomes if he keeps playing like he’s Jameis Winston. Does he even know what our jerseys look like because he’s throwing to the other team like he’s color blind. You know what? Fuck it let’s trade Mahomes before we give him half a billion dollars. Anybody got the Dolphins GM number?
New season, new hope, new expectations. A new season is among us and now the expectations couldn’t be higher for the Chiefs. GM Coolbreeze has transitioned to full time front office as he retires from coaching with 2 SBs under his belt. Andy Reid has been brought back for his second stint with the team after taking time off for family
The Chiefs come in now as a favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Many feel that this is the year that the Madden curse finally gets broken. QB Patrick Mahomes, fresh off an MVP season, is looking to no look pass his way to another MVP and more importantly, a championship. You probably didn't think it was possible for this offense to get more explosive. Your thought couldnt be more wrong.
So we've already mentioned Mahomes. Then you have perennial All Pros Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Those two alone are enough to make any offense one of the best in the league. Now as your 2nd and 3rd WRs you have Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman. The nickname that's gaining momentum is the Legion of Zoom. Well deserved if you're just looking at 40 times. Watkins and Harman run 4.4 and 4.3 respectively, and then you take into account Hill's 4.2, the fastest player in the league. It should be noted that Watkins adamantly states he runs faster than a 4.4, but refuses to publicly run the 40 again. We also heard that the WRs and DBs regularly race in practice, but those sprints are always closed off to the media.
So now that we've talked up the track meet that will be the Chiefs offense, who's going to stop them? Not many teams even slowed them down last season. They start off with a week 1 match up with the vaunted Jags defense. Tyreek Hill said he will forget that Halen Ramsey called him a glorified return specialist. Can't wait for this game to see.....
