After a humiliting loss in the NFC championship game last season, the Green Bay Packers players asked themselves could they get back to the championship game to right the wrongs that were made? The team practically would stay the same as a lot of the core players would come back next season and the front office would draft a few players to fill in, and make a few trades, and a return to the championship game was sure to happen. So they thought. What was thought to be a promising season turned out to be anything but promising. After making a trade to bring in Patrick Peterson to give the secondary another shutdown corner, the Packers had the worst draft of Teckmo according to anyalists.
The season started out like the Pack was back on a roll winning their first two games by not surrendering as passing td. The defense started to call themselves the "No Fly Zone" as they prided themselves on shutting down the passing game of opposing teams. But that was only temporary. Last season the Packers two losses in the regualr season was by a total of four points. This season they were blown out in six games and even lost five games in a row. Aaron Rodgers turned into a turnover machine, having thrown a int in 15 of the 16 games this season. The Packers had one of the best WR groups in the league. Defenses had a tough time preparing for them because you never know who was going to get the ball. This season saw major changes as Randall Cobb was dealt away and Jordy Nelson saw limited time. Devonte Adams emerged as the new go to reciever as he set career highs in yards and tds.
The defense played inconsistent, sometimes they looked like a championship defense and other times looked very average, surrendering big yards play after play. Kevin King is starting to get his name mentioned as one of the best dbs in the league. While Nick Perry is becoming a force on opposing QB's making his second straight Pro Bowl appearance. Josh Jones has stepped up to be a player to watch out for and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is showing he's the leader of the defense.
As the season ends, a lot of questions need answering. Has the Rodgers era ended? Can the WR group be dominant again? Will the defense take a step forward instead of another step back? Only time will tell. Stay tuned.
As I sat in the press box at soldier field for our last game of the season, & looked at the score, I had a bunch of mixed feelings on the performance of the team. We finished 8-8. That means we were mediocre to say it nicely. We had good wins but we had bad ones to. I surely did not expect this & neither did you the fans. We are better than 8-8 & this season we will prove it. This offseason we had to say goodbye to some household names on our team. I would like to personally thank Jordy Nelson, AJ Hawk, Brad Jones, & CJ Wilson for their time here in GreenBay & as we hate to see them go they understand the business side to this & so this is a move that is unpleasant but we have to move on. I feel that with our newest additions we can be more explosive on offense & fearful on defense. We made a huge trade to bring in Arrion Croaker. He will be a fixture on our D for years to come. With Donald butler alongside of him & Clay & Nick on the sides, they will be a force to be reckoned with. On offense with the additions of Emanuel Sanders & Andrew Hawkins we have the explosiveness to get the ball down the field with the best of them. With Eddy Lacy running the ball, we have a balanced running & passing attack. The season is looking up for us & hopefully our recent step back will move us 10 steps forward to the top.
With only a few games left in the season, the Packers have to face a hard reality that their season will be over in a few games without a playoff berth. "This was definitely a disappointment not being able to make the playoffs. Coach McCarthy:"We worked so hard in the offseason & brought in players who we felt will help us get to that next level. We just didn't get it done." In talking with the owner of the team about possible changes within the organization, Stu says: "We feel that no major or drastic changes need to be made right now. Even tho our team fell short of our goal, I still have confidence in this team to get it done. I think as we head into this offseason we will reevaluate our plans, look at possibly a few tweaks here & there but nothing drastic. We have some areas of concern that we'll look at & go from there. Overall I like what we're doing & I will continue to make this team successful." With the offseason within sight will the players take it easy the next few remaining games? Coach addressed that situation. "We all know that we aren't making the playoffs but does this mean we ease up? No it doesn't. We will continue to play hard like we're still fighting for a spot. I expect everyone to give 110% . We still are playing for a winning record." We'll keep a close eye on this team in the offseason.
Well with the playoffs still in sight, the GreenBay Packers have quietly got on a run. With a 3game winning streak & impressive victories over the eagles, giants, & Vikings, things are starting to look up. Even tho the playoff picture still seems like a long shot they still can make some noise. What's been the difference? Coach McCarthy sat down to talk about it. "We started off good then we hit the lowest point of the season with the 5gm losing streak. That was when we had a team meeting & put some things out there & regrouped. The guys were not ready to throw in the towel & they wanted to give our fans what they deserve. We know that we are still a long shot to make the playoffs but we feel that if we can win the rest of our games then that puts pressure on the other teams that are in front of us. We treat each game from here on out as our mini Super Bowl. We know the Giants have had the edge over us & it ft good to finally end that streak. The Vikings took it to us a few weeks ago & we knew we had to play better in order to give us a chance to win. Our next game is one that will test us to the limit against the lions. This game means a lot to us & we have to end our losing streak against them. As we take one game at a time we prepare like we're in our playoffs & that helps us to remain focused." Coach also said they've been working on better ball control & effective defense. It won't be a easy task but it will sure make the run to the playoffs exciting.
The Packers have some decisions to make. This season started off very promising with a quick 3-0 start but now they're in the midst of a 5game losing streak. What seems to be the problem? Is it the offense? Defense? Special teams? Well go thru & look at some areas of concern. Let's look at the offense. Aaron Rodgers started off on fire. He was throwing the ball with accuracy & efficiency. He was spreading the ball around to his receivers & you never knew who was gonna get the ball & have a breakout game. The running game got off to a slow start but over the past couple games Eddy Lacy has picked up his production a lil more. "We're finding more ways to use the running game & put pressure on the defense to play up on the line." Lacy said. But look at the current losing streak. Rodgers is throwing way more ints than he had the 1st 3games of the season. He's had a 6int game, the worst of his career. What has changed? Is it the way teams play him now? Rodgers recently talked about his struggles & the teams current losing streak. "I'm to be held accountable for this. I'm not playing to my potential. I have to get back to basics & stop trying to thread needles & force passes that aren't there. We have something we've never had in my years here at GreenBay & that's a running game. We drafted a good future star in Eddy Lacy & we need to find ways to utilize him. We will get better. We have some good young receivers that compliment Jordy & Randall & we have to find ways to get them in the offense. It's very frustrating to have such a good start & to fall off & lose 5 straight. I'm confident that we will get thru this adversity."
Now let's look at the defense. After making a blockbuster deal for cornerback Patrick Peterson, the results are not what they expected. Since coming over from Arizona he only has 2 ints. He's been beat on Several plays & the coaching staff is wondering what can we do to get him in position to make plays? Coach McCarthy talked about it at practice. He said "Patrick is a great player & we feel he is one of if not the best cb's in the league. We understand that being traded & learning a new system is a challenge but we're sure he can do it & be great for us." The defense is not getting any turnovers. They don't get to the qb nor do the get ints or fumbles. Clay Matthews spoke about their struggles on defense. "We aren't getting turnovers. We can't defend the run, the pass, we just suck. Nothin much more to say. It's frustrating because we're better than this & we have the group of guys that can get it done. We will get it together & turn things around." So looking at the Packers, there's a lot of soul searching that needs to happen & a quick turn around. If they don't turn this thing around could we be looking at some major changes in the offseason? Stay tuned....
I would like to take this time to welcome two new players to our team. Patrick Peterson & Antione Cason we welcome you to our team. We look forward to the contributions you will bring to our team.
