The QB Guru is Back

Brad Flowers is back at it again.  For those of you that didn't know, Brad took on a young team along with a rookie quarterback in his previous job.  Let's not forget to mention he was also a rookie himself.  Raising eyebrows and questions because of his overhaul of the roster to always be in win now mode. But he proved to know what he was doing by going at least 12-4 every season. Also making a Super Bowl appearance and winning at least one playoff game every year besides one which the team was riddled with injuries to several stars.

Now Tennessee has brought in the so called Quarterback Guru to try to replicate his success for another rookie quarterback in Marcus Mariota, with some questions.  Defined as not pro ready by many analysts, and surrounded by a young squad that still needs development.  The roster does not look the best on paper but coach Flowers has said his goal is to make the playoffs as always.  So far Tennessee is off to a good start.

A big help to that were questionable trades that acquired Demarcus Ware and Mark Ingram. Ware seen as old and going backwards when trying to develop young guys on the team. While Mark still only 25 was said not to be worth a Sankey and Mettenberger. But both have made their mark on the team as ware has a sack in both games while also provides veteran leadership to a young defensive line. Plus pairing him with Casey has made their line respectable. And Ingram exploded on the scene in his debut with 155 yards rushing. They always say a good ground game is a quarterback's best friend, let alone a rookie quarterback.

Marcus in his first game barely threw for 150 yards. As coach Flowers eased him into the game with easy reads and a plethora of formations to keep the defense off guard. Mariota was free to reign in his second game. Putting up an astounding three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Marcus showed poise in the pocket and made checks when needed.  Throwing the ball all over the field to the open receiver.  His favorite targets on the day were the 6'6 rookie known as DGB who caught a deep bomb in broken coverage right before the half ending the day with 100 yards receiving. And of course veteran tight end Walker had a good day constantly getting open against a man heavy defense and hot routes to counter the blitz. Mariota's one scramble came on a play where everyone was covered down field and he escaped the pocket for about a crucial 20 yard touchdown.

Coach Flowers believes this team is taking the steps in the right direction. He also talked about how important winning the turnover battle is. His young quarterback so far has 4 passing touchdowns along with one rushing. And you guessed it, no turnover thus far for the rookie. The defense has down much better causing many turnovers, with Mccourty leading the way with three interceptions. Brad is showing why he is called a quarterback guru. If Marcus can keep this up I think he has a shot to win rookie of the year. It starts up again with the week 3 matchup against division rivals Colts.
