After the writer was locked in some crazy man's basement for a week, it is time for the NFC report, brought to you by Papa Johns, better ingredients, better pizza.
In intraconference play the winning team gets the blurb.
NFC NORTH
In the NFC North we had an absolue stomping of a game by the Lions, tossing the ball effortlessly on the Bears in an absolutely dominating affair winning 35-0 with none of RGIII's passes hitting the ground. The Green Bay Packers won in a close contest as both the Packers and Pats exchanged blows and balls with a total of 7 interceptions thrown in a 20-17 victory by the Packers.
NFC EAST
In the big east the Cowboys have started to express doubts in their starting quarterback as Andy Dalton threw 4 picks in a 27-0 loss against the Eagles. In a week with way too many shutouts, the Giants were shutout by the Jaguars in Jacksonville scoring 0 to Jacksonville's 31. The Washington Redskins gave the Colts their first win of the season in a tightly contested contest, losing 21-20.
NFC SOUTH
The Panthers pulled out an 11 point win against the Vikings as Cameron Wake was a force getting 3 sacks. What many would peg as the game of the year, the Bengals took on the Buccaneers in Tampa as the Bucs defense kept Tampa in it, but close only counts in horshoes and handgrenades, as the Buccaneers lost 24-27. The Saints lost to the Steelers 8-24.
NFC WEST
A battle between two top teams took place in Santa Clara, as the 49ers came away with a 12 point victory over the Seahawks as Lamar Miller ran for over 150 yards and 2 touchdowns. A strong defensive performance by the Cardinals held the Falcons to 0 touchdowns as the Cardinals won 15-3. The Rams continued their AFC West wrecking tour, beating the Raiders 24-10.
GAMES TO LOOK OUT FOR IN WEEK 14
Tampa Bay at Detroit looks to be a game to keep you eye on as the dual threat ability of Robert Griffen III looks to shatter the Buccaneers suffocating defense. Seattle at Philidelphia is another game with playoff hopes on the line, as the Hawks hope to keep playoff dreams alive while the Eagles attempt to keep hold of their division
PLAYOFF PICTURE
49ers 12-0
Bucs 11-1
Lions 10-2
Eagles 7-5
Packers 8-4
Rams 8-4
In the hunt
Seahawks 8-4
Cowboys 6-6
Technically not mathematically eliminated
Panthers 5-7
The NFC race looks as if their front runners are set in stone, the only real shakeup in the top 3 seeds will probably happen this week in Detroit. The Cowboys and Seahawks are both in "win and in" situations, each playing the division rival ahead of them in the hunt later in the season.
As the season moves on past the halfway mark, the Chargers sit atop their division 6-2 after a clash against the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium, where the Chargers won convincingly, 38-21.
The game didn't look too great for the Chargers as Broncos receiver Allen Robinson seemingly could not be stopped, coming back for a ball and taking it 75 yards for a td in the early going. San Diego would respond with a drive that ended on a Latavius Murray touchdown. After Tyvon Branch got one of the two interceptions on Broncos QB Drew Brees, Murray would take his next carry to the house, on a 71 yard touchdown. This large gain sparked Murray's first 100 yard game in his career. Jimmy Garoppolo would find Jeff Janis for a catch and run and a touchdown, putting the Chargers up 21-10 before exchanging field goals at half time making the score 24-13 at half.
At the start of the 3rd quarter the Chargers got the ball back and marched down the field until Garoppolo threw his only pass that was not caught by a Chargers player, into the hands of Joe Haden. However Denver would not come away with points and the quarter would remain scoreless as Broncos kicker Ryan Succop missed it right off the upright. Garoppolo would find Janis on another pitch and catch td to put the Chargers up 31-13 and immediately afterwards Drew Brees threw a pick 6 right into Bobby Wagner's hands to put the Chargers up 38-13. The Chargers then let the Broncos chew up almost 6 minutes of clock on their next td drive, where Kniles Davis scored on his first carry of the day to make the score 38-21.
Asked about the performance of his offense, coach Eylao said, "It was the best I've seen them execute our gameplan, but it still could have been better." And of the defense, "We let Drew Brees stat pad too much in the 2nd half; however, I wanted Taiwan, Michael, and Larry to get some snaps in as they never see the field."
Gameball went to Latavius Murray for his first 100 yard game, and his first multiple touchdown game of his career.
The Chargers play the floundering Dolphins next week.
A game where San Diego needed to win to maintain first was met very well by the Chargers after last weeks loss to the Raiders. The Chargers took on the Chiefs in Qualcomm Stadium last week and came out on top 26-8.
Chargers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a deceptively average game, in spite of his 250 yards and 3 tds he barely completed half his passes and threw a really stupid interception in the 4th quarter. Latavius Murray also had a very poor game on the groundhaving less than 4 yards per carry. However the Chargers other running backs made up for Murray's lack of production by catching 2 touchdown passes. Wide Receiver Jeff Janis had the first 100 yard game of his career, as well as the first by a Chargers wide receiver.
The Chargers defense suffocated the Chiefs offense, giving up 0 points until Mike Wallace outran the defense for a TD. San Diego's run defence was questionable, however; giving up over 4 yards per carry.
A special mention has to be given to punter Marquette King who pinned the Chiefs inside the 5 twice and the 10 4 times.
Game ball goes to Gerald McCoy, who was a force on the field, sacking Ryan Tannehill 3 times.
If domination was the theme of last week's game, disaster was the theme of this one as the Chargers took on the Raiders.
San Diego QB Jimmy Garoppolo looked out of sync with his receivers, outside of a couple of big plays there were some key miscues that could've led to more points and yards. Throwing for 3 picks, one for a touchdown, and losing a fumble on the potential game winning drive, the rookie quarterback showed the consistency most rookies do. More unsettling than Garoppolo's performance, was the stagnation of the running game. Latavius Murray was held to a season low in yards as well as yards per attempt.
The Chargers defense did a decent job considering the special teams miscues and offensive turnovers, giving up only one touchdown to runningback Justin Forsett. However as a theme seems to be plaguing the team as despite a once again stellar defensive effort, the Chargers offense could not capitalize.
Coach Eylao was asked for comments at the end of the game and he said "Consistency week in and week out is the only way to win in the NFL. We got too high after that big win last week, and when you have a team of mostly young men their emotions get the better of them and it's my job as a coach to corral that."
The Chargers lost to the Raiders 14-20 and potentially lose first place in the division.
Complete domination in Qualcomm Stadium as the San Diego Chargers took on the New York Jets this past Sunday.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a great night of passing, dropping dippin' dots all over the field throwing for over 200 yards and 4 touchdowns with no picks and over 10 yards per attempt. The ball was spread around well, with no receiver having more than 3 catches. Latavius Murray and Shane Vereen averaged over 5 yards per carry between the two of them on the night, with Murray continuing to carry the majority of the load.
The real story of the night was the defense, who had taken offense to shadowx12 calling them the "Legion of Volleyball", picking off Jets quarterback Matt Ryan 7 times. "It was just a really lucky night," laughed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who had 3 of the 7 picks, including the one that ended the game. The Chargers had a tough time stopping the Jets trick plays however, as Frank Gore had over 70 yards on 8 carries.
The Chargers won the game 44-3, with game balls going to Garoppolo and Rodgers-Cromartie for their outstanding individual efforts.
Eylao's Chargers and Woolley's Jaguars faced off in a showdown of two stellar defenses in Qualcomm Stadium.
The Chargers offense struggled to do anything throughout the whole game, with Jimmy Garoppolo throwing 3 picks and only scoring one touchdown. Many fans were heard after the game uttering words of wanting to start Kyle Orton over the rookie, however Eylao remained standfast at the rookie's side with his support, blaming the playcalling of recently hired offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.
The Chargers defense gained a new nickname after today's game; dubbed as the "Legion of Volleyball" by Jack Woolley, the defense dropped many interceptions today after getting 5 yesterday. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was the biggest offender, having 2 dropped picks and missing completely on an easy pick 6.
The Chargers lost 7-10
"So what if we won ugly."
That was the sentiment spoken by coach Eylao after the San Diego Chargers defeated the Buffalo Bills 17-7.
The offense has continued to struggle, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo having his worst week of his young career, throwing for less than 200 yards and 2 interceptions with only 1 touchdown. "We tried to stretch the field a bit more this game and it just didn't work out." Eylao said, "Jimmy had a couple of nice passes but we just couldn't real them in." A silver lining through the past performances, was that the rushing attack of the Chargers was as consistent as always, converting on 3rd downs whenever the team needed one, as emphasized in the 14 play 80 yard td drive to start the 3rd quarter.
The defense, as usual, continued to excel with a host of Charger defenders picking off Bills quarterback Colin Kapernick 5 times as well as sacking him 3 times. Givng up less than 4 yards per carry once again, this time to running back CJ Spiller, the focal point of the ballistic Bolts has shifted from the offense to the defense. Literally putting the team on their back in order to win games.
A game ball was awarded to every member of the defense for not letting the Bills back into reach.
Spirits soar in sunny San Diego, as the Chargers cameback from a 20-7 deficit to overcome blaise1234's Seahawks 20-21.
San Diego's quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had a rough first half, throwing 2 interceptions to only 1 touchdown but sparked the offense into high gear in the 4th quarter by completing long passes to wide receiver Jeff Janis and Chris Givens. Givens had the longest catch of the day, a 56 yard TD strike on 4th and 18 in the middle of the 4th quarter to put the Chargers in a much more manageable 20-14 deficit.
The Chargers defense had no answer to the methodical matriculation of Seattle's Russel Wilson and Marshawn Lynch, allowing them to drive down the field almost effortlessly and chew up the clock. However the Chargers defense came through in the 2nd half, giving up absolutely 0 points and bottling up Lynch, holding him to less than 4 yards per carry.
After a Donnie Jones punt and a good return by Ted Ginn, Garoppolo's Chargers took the field close to midfield with about 5 and a half minutes left on the clock. Coach Eylao had faith in his run game and had Latavius Murray carry the ball 7 times in the final drive, culminating in a 4th and goal from the 8 yard line. Garoppolo found Shane Vereen in the corner of the endzone, and Cody Parkey kicked the extra, and final, point to put San Diego ahead 20-21.
Coach Eylao spoke with the team in the locker room, citing how while it's good to live in the moment of the victory there was still plenty of work to do offensively and lots of fortunate bounces throughout the game. He then passed out 2 gameballs, one for Garoppolo, the other for Tyvon Branch, who had the game sealing interception and led the team with 6 solo tackles.
What many had expected to be a defensive battle became exactly that as the San Diego Chargers took on the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale Arizona on Monday Night Football.
The Chargers defense, led by Bobby Wagner, was a no go zone for much of the night, giving up only 157 yards through the air and 30 yards on the ground, as well as picking off Cardinals QB Carson Palmer twice and sacking him 3 times, forcing an additional fumble. Everson Griffen's force fumble led to Shariff Floyd scoring what would be the points that put the game out of reach for Forte612's Cardinals.
For as good as the Chargers defense was, the Chargers offense struggled. Rookie Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo making his first NFL start was effecient with his passes, completing 24 of 33 passes, however he showed an inability to push the ball down the field with only 247 passing yards and an interception. The rushing attack led by Latavius Murray proved to be much like the passing game as it was effecient but not explosive, averaging 4.6 yards per carry but never going for a rush longer than 15 yards. The only touchdown scored by the Chargers offense was by Fullback Jay Prosch in the 2nd quarter
Catching up with coach Eylao after the game, we had asked him what it felt to get that first win of his coaching career as well as his thoughts on the state of the team, and coach said, "We felt like this was a good matchup for us offensively and we performed way under expectations. A win's a win but I felt as though we could be more explosive as a unit. The only play over 20 yards we had was Jeff's catch in the 4th quarter on third and long and there is certainly room for improvement on that front."
