Not everyone is going to find this interesting or useful, but I made this for those that would. After consulting with Reece, we have created, and now bring to you, the Player Overall Spreadsheet.
You can use this spreadsheet to see how the attributes you plan to upgrade will effect that player's overall. This spreadsheet works only for Offensive and Defensive Players (No Special Teams)
NFC South
Panthers – Paul
Paul takes over the reigning NFC Champions, the Carolina Panthers. Coming off a great season, and looking to have their star WR Kelvin Benjamin back, look for the Panthers to be a force in the NFC South. There will be some question marks, however, that will need to be addressed.
A big question mark is going to be at RB. Johnathan Stewart is a stud, there is no doubt about that, but the rest of the carousel leaves much to be desired. Additionally, Stewart is old. He wont be in the league too long in 17. WR is kind of shakey, but has pontential. The aforementioned Benjamin will be a stud and Devin Funchess is serviceable.
The defense though. Oh man the defense. This defense is stacked at almost every position. Star Lotuleilei and Kawann Short anchor an over powered Dline. In the middle of the field you have Keuchly, Shaw Thompson, and Thomas Davis to do work. The biggest question mark though comes in a very critical spot, Cornerback. The Panthers opted to let star Josh Norman walk in FA, and did little to replace him. Instead, they have aging Rolando McClain, and young Benwikere to defend the pass. Not a great prospect.
I don’t know much about Paul. I do know that he isn’t in an easy division. Darce is one of the stronger Hub users, and I expect that to stay that way. Paul will have his hands full, but he certainly has the team to make it.
Season Prediction: 10-6 (2nd in the NFC South)
Buccaneers - Darce
Darce, one of the better users in Hub, takes over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This could be an interesting team to use, with stars in several positions.
The Bucs will be returning with Star QB Jameis Winston, who will look to build on a surprisingly solid Rookie year. With the ever dangerous Mike Evans on the outside, and TE Austin Sefarian Jenkins on the inside, the passing game should be very solid. Darce may need to try and locate some speed for the offense though. In the backfield, the muscle hamster will look to continue his resurgence. Doug Martin should benefit greatly from the revamped running mechanics in M17.
The defense took a hit towards the end of the season, and rightfully so. They looked HORRENDOUS. Lavonte David took a substantial ratings hit over the season, but should still be a solid LB. Darce has his user in Kwon Alexander, a cheap knock off of Ryan Shazier. The downside here is the CBs. I just don’t see anyone who stands out. Brent Grimes is old as dirt, but his wife will make sure Darce keeps Brent on the roster.
Ultimate, Darce has a solid team to build on. He has the pieces that matter most, and that should scare the rest of this division. Look for him to take it his first season, and never look back.
Season Prediction: 13-3 (1st in the NFC South)
Falcons – Zanaken
Zanaken takes over the shit storm that is the Atlanta Falcons. I don’t have many good things to say about them, so I will keep this somewhat brief.
On offense you have the threat of Julio constantly bearing down on you, the question is whether Matty Ice will suffice. You have the tandum of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman in the backfield, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them go in favor of improving this squad. On defense, you have utter garbage. Outside of Desmond Trufant and Vic Beasley, the only potential on this roster is 1st round draft pick Keanu Neal. Good luck buddy.
Season Prediction: 7-9 (3rd in NFC South)
Saints - Vegassaints
If you thought the Falcons were bad, the Saints seem MUCH worse. Brees will be serviceable, but only for a year. The offense will probably revolve around Cooks and his lightning speed. Mark Ingram is a bruiser, but is a notoriously bad Madden RB. On defense, you have a solid user LB in Stephon Anthony. The rest of the roster is either unproven or grossly overpaid. Sorry, I got nothing else to say about it.
Season Prediction: 5-11, if he is lucky. (4th in NFC South)
NFC North
Bears – Luda
The 3 time SB Champ, Ludachris, returns to m17 with his favorite team, DA BEARS. Unfortunately, there is little to be excited about with team. At least, until Cutler dies in a fiery train crash. Than we can be excited.
In all honesty, this offense is fairly decent. When you consider the freak that is Kevin White will be available again this season, you really cant go wrong. Alshon Jeffrey is a stud also, though just a tad bit on the slow side. The Bears will look to lean on up and comer Jeremy Langford for their rushing attack as they let Forte go during the offseason. The departure of Martellus Bennet may also hurt them.
On defense, the Bears had a key addition in former Denver LB Danny Trevaythan. Look for Trevaythan to make plays early and often, though staying healthy may be a problem. Leonard Floyd looks to crack the depth chart, and will probably start early in place of the aging Houston. Rising stars Adrian Amos and Kyle Fuller will look to lockdown the secondary, but will need some help as Tracy Porter is the next best option….not pretty
Luda is by far one of the best Madden players in Hub. Making the SB in all but one season since the reboot, I expect that he will be pushing for another run at the start of 17. Mitch is in his division, and can play him close, but Mitch has also been away from madden for years now.
Season Prediction: 15-1 (1st in NFC North)
Vikings – Mitch
Mitch returns to Hub with the highly coveted Minnesota Vikings. This team is young, it has depth, and there are plenty of studs on the roster. Mitch couldn’t have picked a better team to start the season with. Now its just a matter of seeing if he sticks around.
On offense, Teddy Bridgewater continues to grow into a great QB. Stefon Diggs flashed brilliance last season, so I expect a ratings boost for 17. Couple that with one of the best WRs in the draft in Laquan Treadwell, and Mitch has the makings of a solid 1-2 WR core. Speedster Cordarelle Patterson will probably be relegated to YOLO duties though. Adrian Peterson is coming off an age defying, monster year, and will look to carry the running game on his back once again. This should give Mitch enough time to find a replacement for when he dies.
It is really hard to find holes on this defense. Sharif Floyd, Linval Joseph, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith, etc. The defense is stacked. It’s young. There wont be much need to draft defense for the Vikings early in M17. With the addition of second round CB Mackensie Alexander, the Vikings attempted to fill a need at CB. The question will be whether one of these CBs can standout. If not, Mitch will have to pray that Barr and Smith can stop the pass on their own.
Mitch will be interesting to watch. A strong player before his hiatus in 16, he will look to recapture that skill level in 17. I don’t see it happening right away, but I have been wrong so many times before.
Season Prediction: 10-6 (2nd in NFC North)
Packers – Alqoholic
This kid. A recent newcomer to Hub, Alqoholic takes over the Green Bay Packers. The Packers haven’t changed much on offense or defense aside from additions through the draft for the respect lines. The team doesn’t need a whole lot anyways.
Lets be honest. Any team with Aaron Rodgers at the helm is going to be a contender. Couple that with a studded WR core with the likes of Adams, Nelson, and Janis, and your passing attack alone could win games. Add in fat man Lacy, and a revamped focus by EA on the running game, and you have a recipe for one of the most potent offenses in the league. The question will be, can Alqoholic utilize them to their potential?
Defense definitely has some question marks. The LB core is aging and the Packers didn’t really address it during the draft. Mike Daniels and 1st round pick Kenny Clark look to wreck opposing offensive lines, but outside of them there really isn’t anything to fear. In the secondary we have the stud in Demarious Randall and an old, but still serviceable, Sam Shields. Morgan Burnett and Ha-Ha Clinton Dix will look to help in locking down the secondary.
Alq has himself a solid team. Unfortunately, he finds himself in one of the toughest divisions. If Mitch plays like he used to, Alq is in for a tough run during M17, but has the potential to learn and grow. Let the rage flow through you buddy.
Season Prediction: 7-9 (3rd in NFC North)
Lions –Melo
Melo. You da real MVP. Melo volunteered for the Lions. Good man. Not sure why there was no interest though. The pieces are there, they just need to be put together.
The biggest question mark on offense is the WR core. With the retirement of Calvin Johnson, and the Lions refusing to draft a WR to replace him, the offense turns to Golden Tate and Marvin Jones. These two are no slouches, but they certainly don’t compare or replace Calvin Johnson. The Lions do have the glitch that is Eric Ebron, so that should help some. Ameer Abdullah looks to bounce back after and underwhelming season. Can Melo get this offense rolling? Maybe, but its going to take some work.
The Defense is underwhelming in real life, but is loaded with Madden Studs. Everyone remembers chasing Zaviar Gooden in FA during the initial season of M16. This wont be the case for M17 as Gooden has found a home with the Lions. The front 7 is anchored by stud Ezekial Ansah, and the aging Haloti Ngata. The secondary is fairly decent with star Darius Slay, and enforcer Glover Quinn. This defense certainly won’t slouch.
Melo takes over a mediocre team that no one wanted. Possibly because people forgot who was on the team. More than likely because the offense is lacking. Melo will have his work cut out for him, but the pieces are there.
Season Prediction: 6-10 (4th in NFC North)
AFC East
Patriots – Rohr
Rohr takes over the perennial powerhouse that is the Patriots. Of Course, they only seem to be that in real life and not in Madden. Known for great players who make plays when the team needs it, the New England Patriots are no slouch, but they certainly are hurting in certain areas.
Offensively, the Patriots have Old Man Brady manning the helm. Of course, he will probably retire after the first season of 17, since he usually only made a season or two in 16. This brings up the question of whether or not you immediately start 3rd round pick Jacoby Brissett. With solid WRs to pick up the slack, and Gronk doing dirty ass Gronk shit, it may be a solid option. Speaking of the WRs, there are some solid options on the Patriots squad, but EA certainly made sure they were slow as hell in 16. I can’t see them getting a speed boost for 17 either. This means that, while they are excellent at catching the ball, a DT could outrun them. Doesn’t bode well. Turning to RB, you have a lard ass and a bunch of nobodies leading the committee. I doubt Blount makes the squad, but with Rohr you never know.
On Defense we have some interesting pieces. The Patriots didn’t have a 1st but in the 2nd they drafted CB Cyrus Jones, who will look to help improve an already solid (yet also slow) CB core. The Patriots have two excellent LBs in Donta Hightower and Jamie Collins, but they opted to get rid of stud DE Chandler Jones, replacing him with old ass Ninkovich. This d-line looks like shit.
Rohr has taken over a team that needs improvement. Unfortunately, the stats don’t seem to match the level of skill this team shows weekly in real life. Rohr also finds himself in a division with a solid player. No way the Patriots see 1st in the Division, especially with Rohr on a temporary hiatus.
Season Prediction: 7-9 (2nd in AFC East)
Bills – Chic
Not sure why the program gave Chic the Bills. Everyone knows he loves his rollout cheese, so the program went and gave him Tyrod Taylor. Fuck this Shit. Chic gets one of the best teams in the North.
The Buffalo Bills. Maybe he can return them to greatness, cuz Rex sure as hell wont.
Tyrod looked great last season, so I can forsee a stat boost for him in 17. He also gets Lesean McCoy and Sammie Watkins to do damage in the passing and the running game. With Chic using this team, the offense will be fairly difficult to stop. Did I mention speedster Marquise Goodwin for the yolos? Ya….
On defense, the Bills added a great DE in Shaq Lawson. Look for Lawson to make a quick impact as Olines will be more focused on the steam train that is Dareus. The Bills also boast two of the NFLs top end corners in Ronald Darby and Stephon Gilmore. These guys will shutdown a passing attack if opponents aren’t paying attention and being careful with the football.
Chic is going to be one of the better users in Hub for M17. He is a strong user in his other leagues, and that will carry over here. With a solid starting team, and room to grow, I expect Chic to dominate the North.
Season Prediction: 12-4 (1st in the AFC East)
Jets- Ricky
Ricky. We call him Jets, mostly because I legit didn’t know his gamertag until we started these articles. Fuckin lazy commishes. Ricky inherits a solid Jets squad, only problem is that time is NOT on his side.
The first thing we look at is the QB situation. Fitzpatrick is trash, but hes also still a Free Agent. This means that good ole Geno Smith is the starting QB. Not good news… Could we see an immediate swap to Bryce Petty? Probably, but I think a switch to 3rd round pick Christian Hackenberg may be in the cards. At WR the Jets have two excellent players in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Unfortunately, they turn 95 shortly. Marshall will be dead after a season, and Decker is quickly following. Ricky’s window of opportunity is small, and I don’t think he will have a chance to capitalize. Speaking of old, Forte kicks off an otherwise unpleasant scene at HB. The only brightspot for age is emerging TE Jace Amaro.
The Jets have a stacked defense. Muhammed Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Darrell Revis, and Calvin Pryor will all look to lend a hand as Ricky tries to garner some wins in 17. Revis wont last long though, much like the rest of the team. Unfortunately, the Jets opted to let Demario Davis go to the Browns. While underwhelming in real life, Davis is a solid M17 linebacker, and his presence will be missed.
Ricky is going to have to rebuild this team, there is no doubt about that. Expectations will be low. Morale will be low also when you are in a division with Chic. Ricky also has struggled in past seasons.
Season Prediction: 4-12 (4th in AFC East)
Dolphins – Browns
Lazyeyed gets the Dolphins. No one really wanted the Phins, but those who did had them rated highly. Its possible that no one wanted them because they just let their star RB leave and traded for some shitty players on stupid contracts. Who knows. Lets dive in.
Recent FA Addition Kenny Stills and up and coming WR Jarvis Landry look to make an impact right away on this team. The question will be, can Lazy and Tannehill utilize them, or will they dwindle? Because, in all honesty, the Phins have no run game. Led by second year RB Jay Ajayi, and a bunch of other nobodies, this running attack wouldn’t even scare the Falcons. On the flip side, theres always Jordan Cameron, who is a solid TE option. Still, the running game is dead. This team looks to be one dimensional.
This offseason the Dolphins brought in, via trade, Kiko Alonso (a one and done LB) and Byron Maxwell (a mediocre at best CB). Both players are on contracts that were signed back when Chip Kelly let circus chimps do negotiations. They signed the fading Mario Williams after letting Vernon walk, silly. The only thing good on this team is Wake and Suh, but they cant do it all themselves!
Lazy has shown flashes of skill, but simply isn’t consistent. This Dolphins team isn’t doing him any favors. While I don’t expect him to be a true bottom-dweller, I can’t see much more coming from him and this team.
Season Prediction: 6-10 (3rd in AFC East)
Jags – Awalker
AWalk hit the lottery, getting one of the most coveted teams for M17. The jags had a busy offseason, make improvements all over (especially on the defensive side of the ball). This should make for an exciting opportunity, so let’s hope that Walk doesn’t blow it.
A look at the offensive side of the ball doesn’t show much of a change from last season. The two Allen’s look to take the next step to an elite level with Blake Bortles still slinging the ball to them. Meanwhile, the Jags did add thumper Chris Ivory to add some certainty to a question mark at RB. Julius Thomas may see a bit of a drop off in stats, but he will still be an excellent pass-catcher, so the weapons are certainly there.
The defense is where the majority of improvements happened. Adding the two most coveted defensive players in the draft, Jaylen Ramsey and Myles Jack, and bringing in Teshaun Gipson and Malik Jackson, this Jaguars defense looks to make waves. The return of injured Dante Fowler should be a welcome site, and the growth of Telvin Smith should scare many in the South.
Walker has developed into a solid user in his leagues. Probably because he finally figured out how to use Ball Hawk. That, coupled with Walk likely usering Telvin, could prove to be a tough task for some of these other teams to overcome. However, I don’t think the offense is there yet to be a valid threat.
Look for the up and coming Walker to finish below .500 during his first season, but don’t expect that to be the norm. Given a season or two to draft improvements on the offense and I can see AWalk threatening and even taking the division.
Season Prediction: 7-9 (3rd in AFC South)
Texans – Bacon
Ah Bacon. A relative newcomer to Hub, and a temporary commish for the final season. Bacon had Texans and Titans in his top 3, and he got away with another one of the most coveted M17 squads. The Texans added some key pieces to a solid squad of guys. Itll be interesting to see how Bacon handles the squad. He likes to wheel and deal, and this team is loaded with bait.
First and foremost, the passing attack on offense should be solid as long as Bacon can develop former Broncos QB Brock “the RocK” Lobster (Osweiller). Brock is a relatively unknown commodity, and the Texans are paying a premium for him, so Bacon may have to go all in on the QBs development. It shouldn’t be a struggle though with Deandre “Nuk” Hopkins and newcomer Will Fuller to help. Also, with perhaps one of the most versatile runningbacks in Lamaar Miller being added, the Texans look to have a pretty solid offense, and a plethora of options for Bacon.
The defense didn’t see much change, but when you have JJ Watt anchoring a tenacious defensive line, who needs to change? Jadaveon Clowney is another stud on that front 7 who will look to make an impact with the squad. Brian Cushing should be a serviceable MLB. The secondary does look a bit shaky. Johnathan Joseph is a solid CB, but hes getting old, and there isn’t really anyone to step up in his place. The Safety position has some question marks also, but the coveted Lonnie Ballentine is on the roster, so all is well.
Bacon is probably the least proven user in the bunch. That isn’t to say that he is a bad user, but just that I don’t know much about him. He does have some solid users to go up against, so it won’t be an easy road.
Season Prediction: 7-9 (4th in AFC South)
Colts – Sam
Sam took over perhaps the worst of the four AFC South teams. While the Colts have a decent offense, they aren’t the powerhouse people were hoping for, and the defense seemed to take a step back.
Andrew Luck will step back in and be the mobile pain in the ass he has always been, but he will most likely get a stat hit after the abysmal, injury filled season he had last year. Did I mention that he wont even be able to act as trade bait after his 80+ million guarantee he just got? At wide receiver you have studs TY Hilton and Donte Moncrief, and speedster Phillip Dorsett. Sam loves to yolo, so I would look for Dorsett to be the stand out among the 3. The running back position is a shit storm though. Old Man Gore will probably not even be useful. After that you have the unreliable Yeldon and Todman. Sam is much better when he can run the ball consistently, so look for him to try and find a fix ASAP. If not, I see him rounding out at the bottom of the pack.
Turning to the shit storm that is the defense. Colts let one of their best linebackers, Jerrell Freeman, walk in free agency. Their lone bright spot is Vontae Davis, who is starting to get up there in age at 28. This defense is going to be a nightmare to rebuild. If general stats hold true, the linebacking core will be horrendous, with very little to help up front. An aging and mediocre secondary means teams will have a hay day against this defense.
While I seriously doubt that Sam will blow people away with this squad, I think he makes the changes necessary to take first in the division on the opening season. That being said, he will have to make some smart decisions in the Draft, FA, and with trades if he wants to maintain his control. The other users in the division could quickly outgrow Sam if he doesn’t fix this black hole of talent.
Season Prediction: 10-6 (1st in AFC South)
Titans – Anchorman
Returning after a long hiatus, Anchorman takes over the young Tennessee Titans team. The Titans garnered quite the haul during the draft this offseason, adding an extra first and third round. This certainly makes up for trading away their 2nd round for 2017. Two first round picks is a sure fire way to strengthen an already young and growing team.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Titans certainly look like they have gotten stronger. After trading away Levine, the Titans solidified their line by drafting Jack Conklin. They also drafted Derrick Henry to complement their FA addition of Demarco Murray, giving the Titans a potent running attack. The passing attack wont be far behind either with up-and-comer Dorial Green-Beckam looking to put his stamp on the season, and Kendal Wright opposite of him.
The defensive line is anchored by Pro Bowler, Jurrel Casey, who will look to clog up the middle of the running lanes. Unfortunately, a majority of the defense is either aged, or just unimpressive. The secondary will definitely be an area of concern, so look for the Titans to address it early (possibly by moving Murray) or address it with one (or both) of their 1sts.
Anchorman used to be a top tier player before he opted to call it quits. He will be returning to Hub after having missed at least 3 seasons. While I want to say he won’t lose a step, I don’t believe that to be true. He does have the benefit of good competition, so maybe that will help him get things goin
Season Prediction: 8-8 (2nd in the AFC South)
The end of the regular season has come, and it is time to revisit my Bold Predictions. Pretty sure I didn't do so well.
1. Ravens Win the Division at 12-4
This prediction relied heavily on the Ravens beating the Steelers and the Bengals being contenders rather than pretenders. The Steeler's handily won the division at 14-2. The Ravens made the playoffs at 11-5.
2. Redskins Finish 10-6, Make Wildcard
With 1 game left to play, this one looks like it’s all systems go. Redskins are currently 10-5 and in the #6 seed. Their playoff berth is guaranteed. Now to see if they win or lose. They get the Chargers, a surprisingly thought team when they want to be.
3. Cam Newton Finishes With a League Leading 40 Interceptions
This one was a long shot. Moru was playing like shit. He quit. It could have happened. Unfortunately it didn't. The INT title was 40 picks, but it goes to both Philadelphia’s Andrew Myers and Atlanta's Ryan Mallet.
4. Broncos Miss the Playoffs at 10-6
This one was another long shot. I saw Swan dropping more, and the Bengal’s playing better. Swan did his part, finishing 11-5 and barely hanging on to the #6 seed. Bengals imploded.
5. Slanted knocks off the Texans in the SB
TBD, but I don't think the Texans make it anymore. They have caved under pressure against any playoff caliber opponent, and some non-contenders.
In what ended up being one of the most difficult, and important, games of the season, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a win in Foxborough with a score of 40-35. Things started off shakey for the Chiefs as they quickly found themselves in an early hole. The Chiefs defense look lost for the most part against a Patriots offense that put up over 350 yards through the air. Patrick Nunley led the way with 6 receptions for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Not to be outdown, Chiefs backup QB Sean Mannion threw for 378 yards and 3 TDs. Two of those TDs went to star WR Trenten Travis. Travis finished the day with 6 receptions for 137 yards and 2 TDs.
While the Patriots put up a lot of yards, the Chiefs defense came up with 4 critical interceptions. Marcus Peters, Phillip Gaines, Jairus Byrd, and backup Brad Jones each had an interception.
The win ensures the Chiefs first division title since Coach Haglund took over, and should clinch a first round bye (barring any shady business by Madden). The bye will be a much needed one as the Chiefs expect to have the oft injured Drew Brees back in time for the divisional round matchup.
Welcome to Declan's Bold Predictions for MaddenHub. I figure I may try to do 2 of these per season. One during the Preseason and one towards the end of the season. If anyone has the balls, they can try and turn this into a weekly segment, but thats too much work for me. ON TO THE PREDICTIONS!!
1. Ravens Win the Division at 12-4
Looking at the remaining schedules for the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers, The Ravens look to have a much easier stretch out of the three. They just have to win out. A tough loss to the Chiefs can easily be overcome with a big win against the Steelers. After that, the only real competition left on the schedule would be the Bengals. The Steelers, on the other hand, still have the Broncos, Patriots, Texans, and Lions all on slate. A win by the ravens over the Steelers, and losing any more then 2 of those big games could mean there will be a new division champ in the North.
2. Redskins Finish 10-6, Make Wildcard
ATL has improved in skill. While starting the season off 1-3, tides have turned as ATL has won 3 of his last 5, including a cheesy win over the Chiefs. Watch for ATL to knock off a few more easy opponents. As long as he can pick up a win over the Hawks or the Rams, or both, this could be a playoff bound team (or even boot Nerd from the playoffs).
3. Cam Newton Finishs With a League Leading 40 Interceptions
Moru and Newton are currently at second on the INT chart at 22. That means Newton is averaging 2.2 INTs a game, a surprising statistic. The schedule is easy from here on out for Moru, but there seems to be some serious passing mechanic issues. With 6 games left on the slate, 18 more INTs is a streatch, but Saints has shown he can make the INTs (4 against Mariota), so it is definitely within reach.
4. Broncos Miss the Playoffs at 10-6
Sorry bb, but these are my BOLD predictions. This one is by far the biggest stretch. It would mean that the Bengals finished 11-5. It is definitely possibly that the Broncos slip to 10-6. With big games still on the schedule, including the Steelers, Chargers, Chiefs, and Patriots, the road to the playoffs is going to be rough for the Broncos and the Bengals (with an equally difficult schedule) lies in wait to take that Wild Card Spot. If the Broncos crack under pressue, they could quickly end up on the outside looking in of this playoff race.
5. Slanted knocks off the Texans in the SB
There could be any number of scenarios for the SB and it all comes down to how well these teams play in the playoffs. Slanted and his Bucs have been on a roll, putting up gaudy numbers. Slanted will have to take a one game suspension this week, but that probably wont hinder the Bucs at all as he takes the division with ease for the second year in a row. The only teams that can keep him from a SB appearance are the Eagles, Lions, and Bears. He lost to the Eagles in a close one, and the Bears knocked him out of the SB running last season. The Lions remain on the slate for the regular season, but itll come down to pulling his head out of his ass in the playoffs.
The Kansas City Chiefs entered their week 7 game expecting to roll over the bottom feeding Chargers, but were given a run for their money. The Chiefs barely came away with a win after 2nd year star Shaynon Duncan picked off Charger's Tony Phillip with less then 2 minutes to go.
Kansas City's defense had no answer for the aerial attack by the Chargers, giving up its first 300+ yard passing game this season. Jordan Cameron and Justin Blackmon made a mockery of the secondary, both surpasing 100 yards on the game. Unfortunately, for the Chargers, the Chiefs offense proved too much. HB Eddie Lacy continues to have a career season, racking up over 150 yards on the ground. Lacy is on course for a potential 2,000 yard season. Trenton Travis had one of the biggest games of his career posting a 146 yard 2 TD statline.
Coach Haglund had this to say after the game: "I am not surprised that it was a tough game. Matt is a great coach, and there are definitely some solid players on that team. It was a sloppy win, but a win nonetheless. We have a bye week to get to, and we have some things we need to clean up."
The Chiefs enter their bye week as the last remaining undefeated team, and hold a 2 game lead over the reigning divisional champion Broncos. The final 9 games could prove to be some of the Chiefs toughest games as they still have games against the Eagles, Ravens, Patriots, and Broncos on the schedule to go along with possible trap games against the Redskins and Dolphins.
The Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs met for the third time this season in the AFC Wildcard game. True to form, the game was a nail-bitter until the end. The Chiefs came away with the win in overtime with a score of 51-45, sweeping the Broncos this season.
Denver opened up the game with a deep bomb to Demaryius Thomas for a touchdown. On their second drive, Broncos running back CJ Anderson busted a huge run also for a touchdown. While many teams might crumble under such an offensive outburts, Kansas City held on.
Coach Haglund said the following about his team, "You know, the defense wasn't in top form today, and I think they know that. However, they did make the critical plays when it mattered most, and our offense was clicking on all cylinders." When asked about his relationship with Coach Swan, Haglund responded, "He is a damn good coach. We have very close games. He is due for a win, but tonight wasn't that night. I am just glad my guys came out and left it all on the field."
Denver finished with 330 yards through the air and 135 yards on the ground, turning the ball over only once. Meanwhile, Kansas City finished with a massive 503 yards passing and 120 rushing, turning the ball over 3 times. The Chiefs now turn their attention to the Tennessee Titans for what looks to be a great divisional matchup.
On a day when Jamaal Charles ran for a pathetic 20 yards, it would seem as though the Broncos had an easy win against the Chiefs. Unfortunately, the Chief's secondary had other plans. Peyton Manning gave his critics plenty of fodder after he threw a whopping 5 interceptions on the day. Many were surprised considering CJ Anderson ran roughshod over the stout Chiefs defense. Anderson racked up a whopping 105 yards and 1 touchdown on 15 carries.
Eric Berry came away with what was essentially the game winning interception, which he promptly returned for a touchdown. At that point the score was 35-14. Denver proceeded to score two final touchdowns in garbage time.
The Chiefs move to 6-3 on the season while the Broncos drop to 7-2.
A thriller in Kansas City the other night, the Chiefs come out on top thanks to the play of two Smiths. Alex Smith threw for 335 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT, while Sean Smith came away with 3 critical picks. On a night where Jamaal Charles was held under 50 yards rushing on 23 attempts, and the offensive line played worse then a highschool drug addict, the Chiefs needed QB Alex Smith to live up to his recent payday, and Smith didn't disappoint.
Targeting 6 different recievers, Smith moved the ball up and down the field with easy on a stout Bronco's defense. Smith looked often for emerging TE Travis Kelce, targeting him 9 times for 190 yards and 2 TDs. Kelce almost came away with a 65 yard touchdown, but was stopped just shy of the goalline by TJ Ward. Showing once again why the Chiefs drafted him, Chris Conley put his speed on display as he realed in a 34 yard TD, scorching the Denver secondary.
Swan and his Manning-led Broncos couldn't seem to get the passing game moving against a shakey secondary. Coming off a game where the Chiefs gave up over 350 yards passing, Manning was barely able to muster 200. Meanwhile, Manning threw 3 costly interceptions, each to Sean Smith. The Bronco's defensive line, under Wade Phillips, was able to notch 3 sacks, and plenty of hurries, but they ultimately came up short.
These two teams will face off again Week 10 in what figures to be a hard fought battle in Denver.
Final Score: KC- 34 Den- 24.
