It was a glorious season (for some) and it's time to give some recognition to the players who excelled in 2019. First off is the WFL MVP Award, which has been given to Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett, who broke records and compiled an astonishing 45 sacks this season! Runner up for the MVP Award was Cardinals rookie QB Kyler Murray, who dominated opponents while throwing for over 4,500 yards. Murray added 40 TD's to only 8 INT's, for an impressive 133.2 QB rating.
Although he may not have won the league MVP, Kyler Murray is walking away with plenty of hardware this season; Offensive Player of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Best Quarterback. Runner up for OPOY was Panthers HB Christian McCaffrey, who had a dominant season rushing and receiveing. CMC rushed for 908 yards, averaging 5.7ypc, while adding 14 TD's. He also was the Panthers leading receiver, with 66 receptions for 1,072 yards, and 8 TD's.
The NFC Defensive Player of the Year award went to a deserving Khalil Mack of the Bears. Mack was 2nd in the WFL with 30 sacks, and was a constant presence off the edge. Runner up DeMarcus Lawrnce of the Cowboys got to the QB 26 times, 3rd in the WFL. Only 2 DB's made the Top 10 for DPOY, Safeties Adrian Colbert of the 49ers, and Harrison Smith of the Vikings. Colbert amassed 10 INT's which was tied for 3rd in the league, while Smith made QB's unhappy 6 times this season.
While Kyler Murray impressively walked away with the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, there were two receivers who were runners up. Tevin Harrell, an up and coming 21 year old Bears speedster, turned in a line of 62/1226/11 while sitting in the 8th spot for receiving yards in the WFL. Two spots behind him was 22 year old Saints receiver Terrell Moe, who finished with a line of 56/1156/9.
The NFC Defensive Rookie of thr Year was won by Panthers LB/DE Brian Burns. Burns had tough competition in Nick Bosa and Montez Sweat, but Burns' 13 sacks and 3 FF's were too much to overlook. Montez Sweat was the only candidate in the top 5 to play for a team with a losing record, but the 6-10 Redskins will lean on him to help improve their record in 2020.
Other Notable Awards:
Best QB: Kyler Murray, Arizona
Best RB: Christian McCaffrey, Carolina
Best WR: Adam Thielen, Minnesota
Best OL: Joe Staley, San Francisco
Best DL: DeMarcus Lawrence, Dallas
Best LB: Khalil Mack, Chicago
Best DB: Adrian Colbert, San Francisco

The New Orleans Saints woke up to a nice surprise, making a big move up the WFL Power Rankings from 10th to 5th. Unfortunately though, division rivals Tampa Bay and Carolina are numbers 8 and 3, respectively. Rolling into Week 15 sees the Saints with a home game against the previously 8th ranked Indianapolis Colts. Both teams are locked in heated battles for their respective divisions, with wild card hopes as a backup plan. Defensive end Cameron Jordan is coming off one of his best performances of the season, a 4 sack game vs the 3rd ranked 49ers which helped propel them to victory. The Saints defense has been their best unit all season long, currently 4th in points against and 2nd in total yards and passing yards against. The defense must maintain the course for any playoff hopes to remain alive in the Big Easy. One of the most shocking storylines of the 2019 season has been the performance of QB Drew Brees, who has turned in a down season so far, throwing 16 interceptions to only 17 touchdowns. In the midst of contract negotiations, Brees picked a bad time to have one of his worst seasons. Regardless, Brees is hoping for a playoff run in 2019.
Three games into the 2019 CFA season, and both the Browns and Ravens are feeling the pressure already. The AFC North rivals, both led by second year signal-callers, have had a bumpy start to this years campaign, starting off with matching 1-2 records. Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson have both thrown more interceptions than touchdowns, and lead teams who are near the bottom offensively, 20th and 28th respectively. Offseason addition WR Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to find a good rapport with QB Mayfield, as the star receiver has just 5 catches in 3 games, although he missed nearly the entirety of the Browns Week 1 game with a back injury. The Ravens also added an electric WR in Marquise Brown, selecting him 25th overall in the 2019 draft. Brown's speed and athleticism have been as advertised so far, but he is leading the team in drops with 4. Which QB/WR tandem will get on track first? Which team will come out victorious, and hold the AFC North lead with a 2-2 record? These questions and more will be answered on Tuesday when the teams take the field in Baltimore at 6pm est, airing on Twitch TV channel Deuce806.
Week 7 in the WFL saw the New Orleans Saints hit the road and travel to the windy city to face the Chicago Bears. The DL Sportbook had the Bears favored at -5. The Saints' Coach Deuce knew it would be a tough task to contain the Bears run heavy offesne, and that was a major focus for their weeky defensive gameplanning. The Bears running attack was not at full strength, as starter Tarik Cohen is serving a multiple game suspension for "conduct detrimental to the league." The Bears came out running, but the Saints defense was prepared, stuffing the run game early and often. The Saints offense sputtered for most of the day, as Brees was a turnover machine with 5 interceptions. The Bears were able to score in the late 2nd, as QB Tyrod Taylor found rookie WR Tevin Harrel deep over the middle for a 67 yard score to put the Bears up 7-6 at the half.
The 2nd half saw the Saints take a late lead in the 4th, going up 17-14 after a 55 yard TD run by Javorius Allen, and a successfull two-point conversion to TE Bug Howard. The Bears were abe to score on anther deep pass, as WR Antony Miller took a 47 yard pass to the endzone. This was a tough loss for the Saints, as the game stats show the story...5 turnovers. The gameplan was effective though, as New Orleans limited Chicago to just 76 yards on the ground, and an amazing 0% on 3rd down conversion attempts. Week 8 looks like another uphill batte, as the 5-1 Cardinals come to town for a pre-bye week showdown.
Player of the game, Offense: HB Javorius Allen, 10 carries, 74 yds, 1 TD
Player of the game, Defense: LB Demario Davis, 4 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT
New Orleans CB Marshon Lattimore was on top of his game in Week 2 of the WFL, adding 3 INT’s, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns. Lattimores’s performance propelled the Saints to a 33-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. In the postgame interview, Lattimore credited his teammates Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Alex Anzalone for deflecting 2 of the INT’s right into his hands. “We play team defense, no ego’s here. It doesn’t matter who gets it done, as long as we do it as a unit,” said Lattimore. Looking ahead to Week 3, the Saints travel to Seattle to face a tough 2-0 Seahawks team.
