Hindsight is always 20/20, and it's always easier to criticize a decision when you have access to the results, but it's time someone speaks up and critizes the current direction of the Colts.
Nine months ago, the Colts were on their way to the Super Bowl after finishing the season 16-0, and winning both AFC playoff games by double digits. Now we sit here watching a team who has lost 3 out of their last 4 games (counting the Super Bowl), that has managed to regress in all 3 phases of the game.
The Colts had a strong nucleus of talent that led the team to the undefeated season, with the right mix of veteran defensive talent and young, promising offensive pieces. At 14-0 in the Super Bowl, it looked as if the master plan had come together, and it was going to be a magical end to the season. But an Revis dropped INT here, an Antoine Smith fumble there, and the Colts watched the Cowboys celebrate on the grandest stage.
A tough blow to over come, yes. But many on the outside felt the Colts panicked this offseason when they elected to not stay the course with their current nucleus and instead remake the entire identity of the roster.
The Colts elected to sell of many key pieces to bring in Adrian Peterson, but to make room for him on the roster, they had to not only part ways with the key players involved in the trade, but they had to release high salary contibutors like Reggie Wayne, Antoine Caldwell, Antoine Bethea, and they were forced to trade Vernon Davis away just to get under the salary cap.
While many experts rave about the young talen the colts have collected, they have transformed this roster from a Super Bowl ready cast of veterans into a team full of projects.
Fast forward to this week's latest debacle, the 32-31 loss in Buffalo. The Colts held a commanding 21-6 lead in this game, and even held a 2 possession lead with less than 3 minutes remaining. But when the defense needed one big stop, something we saw them do countless times last season, they continued to fail. Xavier Rhodes continues to lose his man in coverage. We keep hearing about how good of an athlete Chris Prosinski is, and how he has more range than the departed Bethea, but last time I checked, Bethea led this team in interceptions last season, and Prosinski has been giving up deep receptions all season long, much like the one he gave up to Julius Thomas on the final drive of the game, which puts the Bills in position for the go-ahead touchdown.
At 1-2. the season certainly isn't over. But the thrashing this team took at home to the Titans in week 1 coupled with this most recent collapse in Buffalo has many wondering if the Colts' agrresive approach this offseason did more harm than good.
The Colts travel to Pittsburgh next week where they will see their old friend Vernon Davis. If the Colts leave Pittsburgh 1-3, the front office will be getting heat from the entire fan base. Either way, it's safe to say that the goodwill this team built up during last season's Super Bowl run has worn off. Turning this early mess around won't be easy, as the colts head on the road for 5 of their next 7 games.
